Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of September 28th, 2015

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of September 28th, 2015

IMG_1560

#1 Los Hijos del Infierno (Ephesto & Mephisto)-It was perhaps the closest official vote we’ve ever had…which is saying a lot. At the end of the day it was impossible for the official voters to ignore the 4-0 week put forth by this tag team. This team is 2/3rds of Mexican National Trios Champions and dominated the week in matches that were all of the six man tag variety. They teamed with Luciferno to defeat Dragon Lee, Valiente & Volador Jr. at CMLL on 9/23, then teamed with Luciferno to defeat Angel de Oro, Stuka Jr. & Valiente on 9/24, then teamed with Luciferno to defeat Angel de Oro, Rey Cometa & Triton on 9/25, and then teamed with Polvora on 9/26 to defeat Mistico, Stuka Jr. & Titan to polish off the week. There’s some debate as to whether their 6 man tag team victories are as strong as some of the straight up 2 on 2 tags that the other teams had, but they do edge out Milk Chocolate for the top spot this week.

#2 Milk Chocolate (Brandon Watts & Randy Summers)-While they had been relatively quiet in 2015, they had a lot of mentions in 2014 but didn’t quite crack the year-end Tag Team Top 50. That may not be the case this year as they had a great week by winning TWO sets of tag team titles over the weekend. They are the new FBW Tag Team Champions and new NYWC Tag Team Champions after they defeated Team Tremendous (Bill Carr & Dan Barry), Dubb Boyz and Flawless & Lawless (Blake Morris & Rex Lawless) on 9/25 at FBW to win the titles and then defeated Flawless & Lawless (Blake Morris & Rex Lawless) and Mike Verna & Talon at NYWC on 9/26 to win the titles and go 2-0 for the week. They had perhaps the biggest two victories of the weekend, which got them the #2 spot and two sets of gold belts around their waists. We hope to see more of them throughout 2015!

#3 F1rst Generation (James Anthony & Victor Andrews)-Oddly enough, the very thing that they had relied on in many of their past appearances in the Tag Team Top 5 write-up was something that wasn’t as strong as it had been on most weeks. F1rst Generation actually came in 5th in the online voting competition and had they gathered just a few more votes to grab even a #2 spot in the voting, they would have had an even higher ranking this week. That being said they did have an impressive week as the PWF Tag Team Champions teamed to defeat Jimmy and Jack Cicero at PWF on 9/24 to retain the titles and then beat Nuclear Kaasarole on 9/28 at RWC to go 2-0 for the week. Great to see a couple of true “IPR Guys” back in the Top 5 once again.

#4 N_R_G (Hype Rockwell & Race Jaxon)-Arguably the biggest single victory over the weekend belonged to N_R_G as they shocked the world, defeating The Devastation Corporation on 9/27 to win the CHIKARA Campeonatos de Parejas. This huge upset surprised everyone and earned them their first ranking in the Tag Team Top 5. In fact, they’re the only team with only one victory to crack the Top 5 this week, proving that CHIKARA’s tag team gold holds a good deal of weight among the official voters. If they can keep this surprising run going, you may see them contending for a spot in the Tag Team Top 50 at the end of the year.

#5 The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter @BeardedBullys)-It was another good news, bad news week for the bearded bullies from Brutalsville, U.S.A. The FIP, AAW, and Zero-1 USA Tag Team Champions started off the week with a loss to Youth Gone Wild at RAPW on 9/25, but then hit their groove as they then beat Team Canada in the First Round of the King of the UP Tourney to win the UPW Tag Team Titles, then beat Skyline & Avalon in Round 2, and then beat Jordy Lee and Brock Hall in the Finals to go 3-1 on the week. With them holding FOUR sets of tag team titles currently, their 2015 has been arguably better than their 2014. With several teams competing for the spot in the Tag Team Top 50, these Hooligans will continue the grind in the quest for a second straight year at the top of the Tag Team Top 50.

People’s Champs. Fighters 4 Hire (Joey Bax & Miguel Rosales)-The Philippines showed up STRONG this week as this duo defeated Dual Shock in a 2 out of 3 Falls Match at PWR on 9/26. The team’s home country showed their support with 143 votes to help them win the online voting competition for the very first time. As always, it’s GREAT to see other countries getting involved to continue to give the Indy Power Rankings and The Tag Team Top 5 a truly international flavor.

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of September 28th, 2015

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of September 28th, 2015

#1 Biff Busick (@_StarDESTROYER)-What a way to say farewell to the indies as Biff Busick heads on to NXT. In 2013 he told us on the Indy Power Rankings LIVE that in 2014 he would become CZW World Champion AND become #1 in the Indy Power Rankings. Both of those things happened in the same week last year. Now he says goodbye to the indies with his second (and likely last) #1 ranking as he moves on to greener pastures. He caps off a great run on the independent scene at Beyond on 9/26 as he defeated Drew Gulak, then defeated Timothy Thatcher, and then defeated Eddie Edwards to win the Greatest Rivalries Round Robin tournament to go 3-0 for the week.

#2 Jun Akiyama-It was yet another fantastic week for this veteran as he won the All Japan Royal Road Tournament last week. He teamed with Último Dragón at AJPW on 9/24 to defeat Masanobu Fuchi and Yohei Nakajima, then defeated Yuji Hino on 9/26 in the semifinals and then defeated Akebono in the final the same night to win the Royal Road Tournament and go 3-0 for the week. With victories in 9 of his last 10 matches, Jun Akiyama is really gearing up for the last portion of 2015. Where will he rank in the year-end IPR 100?

#3 Andy Wu-It was a great week for the NEW Wrestle-1 Cruiserweight Champion as he teamed with Tajiri at Wrestle-1 on 9/21 to defeat Hiroshi Yamato & Minoru Tanaka, then defeated Koji Doi on 9/22, then defeated Minoru Tanaka on 9/23 to win the title, and then teamed with Minoru Tanaka on 9/24 to defeat KAI and Shota to go 4-0 for the week. He has won a very impressive 8 of his last 10 matches and actually gets ranked for the very first time because of this phenomenal week at Wrestle-1. If he can continue this type of run, he’ll be a top contender to get ranked for the rest of 2015.

#4 Jagger-The winner of the 7th Annual PWF Legacy Cup was automatically going to be in contention for a top spot this week and it translated to a #4 ranking for Jagger. While Jagger may not be one of the bigger names at PWF, he did have an impressive tournament run as he defeated Emmanuel Bodega in the first round, then beat Timmy Lou Retton in the second round, and then beat Will Huckaby in the finals to win the tournament. It was a very good week for Jagger as he earned his very first ranking this week.

#5 Manabu Soya-The NEW Wrestle-1 Champion (and ½ of Wrestle-1 Tag Team Champions) becomes yet another in this week’s Top 10 to earn their first ranking in the IPR. He defeated KAI on 9/21 to win the title, then teamed with AKIRA & Kumagoro on 9/22 to defeat Desperado (KAZMA SAKAMOTO & NOSAWA Rongai) & MAZADA, then teamed with Kuma Goro on 9/23 to defeat Ryota Hama and Hiroshi Yamato, and then teamed with AKIRA and Jun Kasai on 9/27 to defeat Hiroki Murase and Shotaro Ashino to go 4-0 for the week. He has racked up 11 wins in his last 13 matches and continues to impress as 2015 rolls along.

#6 Akira Tozawa (@TozawaAkira)-Tozawa continues to have a career year as he gets ranked yet again this week to continue to push for the top spot in the year-end IPR 100. The Dragon Gate Open the Owarai Gate (and Open the Brave Gate) Champion teamed with Masato Yoshino at Dragon Gate on 9/21 to defeat Drastik Boy & T-Hawk, then defeated Stalker Ichikawa twice on 9/22 to defend the Owarai Gate title twice, then teamed with Masato Yoshino on 9/23 to defeat Big R Shimizu & T-Hawk, then teamed with Masato Yoshino on 9/26 to lose to Jimmy K-ness JKS and Jimmy Susumu, and then teamed with T-Hawk & Masato Yoshino on 9/27 to defeat Dia.HEARTS (BxB Hulk & Kzy) & Flamita to go 5-1 for the week. Tozawa has been the cream of the crop at Dragon Gate. Can he earn the #1 spot at the end of the year?

#7 Silver Ant (@TheSilverAnt)-Solid weekend for perhaps the best of all the members of the Colony. Silver Ant defeated Juan Francisco de Coronado at Chikara on 9/26 and then defeated Oleg The Usurper at Chikara on 9/27 to go 2-0 for the week. While it wasn’t his most impressive weekend, it was still good enough to get one of the best technical wrestlers in North America into the Top 10 this week. This is his first ranking this year so he’s got some work to do if he wants to climb into the IPR 100 at the end of the year.

#8 Joey Ryan (@JoeyRyanOnline)-1/2 of the FSP Tag Team Champions pops up again in the Top 10 after a great run in Japan over the last week. He teamed with Hiroshi Fukuda at DDT on 9/21 to defeat Kazusada Higuchi & Suguru Miyatake, then defeated Suguru Miyatake on 9/22, and then teamed with Hiroshi Fukuda on 9/27 to defeat Kota Umeda & Masa Takanashi to go 3-0 for the week. He has won 7 straight matches outside of GFW and continues to prove that he is one of the most talented characters on the indies. What’s next for Joey Ryan?

#9 Santana Garrett (@SantanaGarrett_)-The torch bearer for women’s wrestling and independent wrestling, in general, in 2015 continues to get ranked after defending titles. The NWA, PRW (and Shine, Battling Bombshells, OPW, NPW and CWE) Women’s Champion defeated Shaniah Arlyana at PWR on 9/26 to retain the titles and then teamed with MJ Knight the same night to defeat Grace Storm & Shaniah Alryana to go 2-0 for the week. She has won an AMAZING 41 of her last 42 matches outside of GFW with the only non-win being a draw.

#10 Brian Fury (@xbrianfuryx)-Two HUGE victories for Brian Fury at Beyond Wrestling over the weekend snuck him into the Top 10 this week on a very competitive week. He defeated AR Fox on 9/26 and then followed that up with a win vs. Trevor Lee on 9/27 to go 2-0 for the week. Fury has got some nice momentum for himself right now and with this being his first ranking this year, he has something to build on as we enter the last 3 months of 2015.

People’s Champ. Kidd Riot (@R1OTRUDO)-Much like Biff Busick (but for different reasons), Kidd Riot’s independent wrestling career comes to a close with a victory over the weekend as he won a Rumble at RCCW on 9/26. His fans, supporters, and friends sent him out on top of the online voting competition with 62 votes as he earned the award of “People’s Champ” this week. Congrats to Kidd Riot!

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of September 21st, 2015

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of September 21st, 2015

#1 People’s Champs. Team IOU (@TeamIOU Kerry Awful & Nick Iggy)-“A boy and his dog” are all grown up now and this fun loving tag team is a thing of the past. Hard to believe it’s been since 2014 since they’ve been ranked #1, but it took a little reinvention to get Team IOU exactly where they wanted to be. The PGP Tag Team Champions cemented their place yet again as one of the top tag teams in North America over the weekend when they teamed to defeat David & Cody Morton at SWF on 9/18, then beat The Overdogs (John Greed & Sebastian Suave) on 9/19 to retain the titles, and then beat Jason Cade & Aaron Solow at AWE on 9/20 to go 3-0 on the week. This #1 ranking is something this tag team has been searching for all year long and here it is. To further make sure they got that top spot, they also won the online voting competition this week with 136 votes. Congratulations to Team IOU on grabbing #1 and becoming People’s Champs yet again!

#2 Monster Express (Masato Yoshino & Akira Tozawa)-This Dragon Gate tandem has been absolutely dominant in 2015. In fact, the entire stable has been the epitome of dominance, but this pair in particular has been quite the team. Though they don’t have any titles together, they have amassed a ridiculous amount of wins together this year. This past week they defeated Shingo Takagi & Cyber Kong on 9/15, then beat YAMATO & Kotoka on 9/19, and then beat Jimmy Susumu & La Flamita on 9/20 to go 3-0 for the week. With 9 wins, 1 draw, and only 2 losses in their last 12 matches, this team has been as good as anyone. The only thing that likely kept them out of the #1 spot was their lack of gold as a team. Can they change that before the end of 2015? Look out for them as top contenders to the #1 spot in the year-end Tag Team Top 50.

#3 The Fellowship (GA West & Ronnie Ribs)-Persistence pays off for this tag team who has been quietly toiling away in 2015…but recently have racked up a couple of wins in the online voting competition to stay on everyone’s radar. This was a special week for the SPW Tag Team Champions as they defeated The Middlesex Express on 9/19 to retain the titles and then beat The Refflers on 9/20 to go 2-0 on the week. Despite all their success, this team has not been ranked in the official Top 5…until this week. It’s a solid ranking on a week where there were a lot of strong showings from tag teams all over the world. Congratulations to The Fellowship on their first ranking and likely more to come!

#4 The Hooligans (@BeardedBullys Devin & Mason Cutter)-It was a GREAT news…bad news kind of week for the bearded bullies from Brutalsville, USA. These Hooligans have been dominated tag team wrestling all over North America the last 2 years (and more of course) as they continue to collect gold. This past weekend they won a set of some of the most important tag team titles in the country when they won the AAW Tag Team Titles from OI4K at AAW on 9/18. What hurt them was their loss at DREAMWAVE the next night, BUT they did bounce back with a successful defense of the FIP World Tag Team Titles on 9/20 vs. Lethal Injection in Arkansas. No team lives the Outlaw lifestyle more than The Hooligans and very few can claim as many big wins this year. As usual, look out for them to push for their second straight #1 in the year-end Tag Team Top 50.

#5 The Sun Tanned Demons (Drew Game & Ray Fury)-What an insane weekend for the AIWF Tag Team Champions. They won 3 matches in one day…in 3 different places…in 2 different time zones! They defeated Charlie Art and Iron Mike at TWE in Red Bank, TN on 9/19, then beat Cory Dye and Nate Wyld at UEW in East Ridge, TN the same day, and then beat Planet Funk at MCW in Cagle Mt, TN the same day as well to go 3-0 on the week. This duo is now 4-0 as a team and shows no signs of stopping as they look to continue their undefeated streak together.

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of September 21st, 2015

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of September 21st, 2015

#1 Rampage Brown (@RampageBrown)-In one of the most bizarre voting weeks we’ve ever had, Rampage Brown managed to secure his first #1 ranking with ZERO fan votes. SIX different competitors received consideration at #1 from the official voters with Rampage Brown finally winning out in one of the most “across the board” ever seen in the Indy Power Rankings. Despite the lack of fan support in the voting, the ASW British Heavyweight Champion and 1/2 of PCW Tag Team Champions teamed with Bubblegum and T-Bone at PCW on 9/18 to lose to Charlie Garrett & The UK Hooligans (Roy Knight & Zak Knight) then at IPW:UK on 9/20 defeated Dave Mastiff in the first round, then beat Sammy Smooth in the semifinals, and then defeated Will Ospreay in the final to go 3-1 for the week. While it was not a flawless week, his tournament victory in the IPW: UK Super 8 2015 impressed the voters enough to give him the nod at #1.

#2 Will Ospreay (@WillOspreay)-The former #1 also represented the UK in a big way this past week as the Progress Champion defeated PJ Black at RPW on 9/18, then defeated Ricochet at RPW on 9/19, then at IPW:UK on 9/20 defeated Jody Fleisch in the quarterfinals of the IPW: UK Super 8 2015, then defeated James Davis in the semifinals, but then lost to Rampage Brown in the final to go 4-1 for the week. There’s little doubt that if his loss wasn’t to this week’s #1 that he would have been the likely #1 if he had lost to almost anyone else to go 4-1 on the week. That being said, he’s having a FANTASTIC year and this #2 ranking just further cements that fact as the UK takes the top 2 spots this week.

#3 Timmy Lou Retton (@TimmyLouRetton)

#4 Marcellus King (@MARCELLUSKING1)

#5 T-Hawk-As a promotion, Dragon Gate churns out quite possibly the most consistent rankings due to their break-neck schedule where many of their competitors have the chance to go 3-0, 4-0, or even 5-0 in a one week span. This was a week of the 4-0 variety as he defeated Gamma on 9/15, then teamed with CIMA & Gamma on 9/19 to defeat Shingo Takagi, Naruki Doi and Eita, then teamed with Big R Shimizu on 9/20 to defeat Gamma and Takehiro Yamamura, and then won a battle royal the same day. It was a great weekend as T-Hawk earns HIS highest ranking to date, proving how out of nowhere this week truly was.

#6 Mattick (@Mattick585)-This Colin Delaney and Marc Hauss trainee had a very impressive weekend and even garnered a #1 vote from one of the official voters. The Rochester, NY talent and UPW No Limits Champion defeated Shane Sabre on 9/19 at Upstate Pro in the first round and then defeated AR Fox, Carter Mason and Lionel Knight in the finals to win the Upstate 8 tournament to go 2-0 for the week. His tournament victory may have been a bit overshadowed in a week of tournaments around the world, but he does gets HIS highest ranking to date at #6. We expect more big things around the corner from Mattick.

#7 Chuey Martinez-Chuey Martinez likely had a good chance at being #1 but he was in such an “under the radar” tournament out in Colorado that results were scarce. By beating the likes of JD Horror in the Slave to Death Tournament, he caught the eyes of the official voters, but unfortunately for him, not enough information was available to truly get behind him with a high ranking. With all that being said, Chuey Martinez is perhaps one of the most underrated Death Match stars in the U.S. and we hope to see more of him on bigger stages in 2015/2016.

#8 Ethan Page (@OfficialEGO)-This can’t miss star returns to the Top 10 this week after another stellar weekend. The AAW Heavyweight Champion defeated Matt Cross at AAW on 9/18 to retain the title and then followed that victory up with a win over Cloudy at UPW on 9/19 to go 2-0 for the week. 2 wins. 2 states miles and miles apart. It was another great weekend for one of Canada’s finest and quite frankly, one of the best wrestlers in North America right now in #AllEgo.

#9 Big Damo (@BigBeardDamo)-“The Beast of Belfast” returns to the Indy Power Rankings after yet another good week out in the UK. The XWA and Pride Champion beat some of the best in the world as he beat Tommaso Ciampa at RPW on 9/18, then defeated Doug Williams on 9/19, and then defeated Tommaso Ciampa again at ICW on 9/20 to go 3-0 for the week. Not to take anything away from his huge weekend, but it’s likely he could have ranked even higher if he had beaten someone else on the third night as opposed to beating Ciampa again, BUT that is no knock on the competition he faced. Big Damo truly is a beast and has proved that, winning 10 straight matches.

#10 Mentallo-We get our 2nd Canadian in the Top 10 this week as Mentallo absolutely dominated RCW in Canada over the weekend. He is the NEW RCW British Commonwealth Champion after he defeated Bobby Sharp on 9/18 to win the title, then then defeated Joey Vendetta and Zarif Metovic in a three way on 9/19 to retain the title, and then defeated Brice Sova, Kevy Chevy, Mutato, Shotgun Stevens, Ugg and Zarif Metovichas in a gauntlet match to go 3-0 for the week. With 10 wins, 1 draw, and only 1 loss in his last 12 matches, Mentallo is on fire right now. Can he do more outside of RCW and possibly move up the rankings?

1st Honorable Mention. Kongo Kong (@RealKongoKong)-The former #1 defeated Justice Jones at AAW on 9/18 and then defeated Sherman Tank on 9/19 at RCW to go 2-0 for the week.

2nd Honorable Mention. Sammy Smooth-The NEW IPW:UK All England Champion defeated Sebastian in the quarterfinals of the IPW: UK Future 8 2015, then beat Danny Duggan in the semifinals, then defeated Jimmy Havok in the finals to win the UK Future 8 tournament and Havok’s title, then on 9/20 he defeated Sha Samuels in the first round of the IPW: UK Super 8 tournament, but then lost to Rampage Brown in the semifinals to go 4-1 for the week.

3rd Honorable Mention. Jimmy Rave (@TheJimmyRave)-The  PWA Champion and AWE Georgia Wrestling Crown Champion; defeated Mike Posey by DQ at PWA on 9/19 to retain the title, then teamed with Kevin Blue and Tyson Dean the same night to defeat Mike Posey, Romeo & Sal Rinauro, and then defeated Chris Crunkkk at AWE on 9/20 in a non-title match to go 3-0 for the week.

People’s Champ. Live Wire (@Live_Wire18)-It’s been a long time coming for Live Wire as he has done well in the online voting competition multiple times this year, but hasn’t quite come out on top. This week was different as he racked up 112 votes to easily defeat the other competitors this week. He is the JPW Generations Champion and looks to continue that same type of success going forward.
