2016 Tag Team Top 50

Below is the 2016 Tag Team Top 50 which for those of you who are unfamiliar, is a collection of 50 independent wrestling tag teams based on their previous rankings throughout the year to date. Their rankings in the Tag Team Top 50 are 100% based on where they have been ranked in the Tag Team Top 5 this year. This is not our opinion of who the best tag teams (or “workers”) in the world are based on who we think had the best matches, nor is it a list of names we sat down and collected at the end of the year. Rather, this is a mathematical compilation of how well these talents have done this year based on their rankings throughout the year and the 3 major criteria that we use to rank wrestlers on a weekly basis:

1. Win-loss record for the week & overall
2. Strength of opponents for the week
3. Overall public perception of the wrestler in question (i.e. Young Bucks have a stronger following than a regional independent wrestler who most people have never heard of)
With that being said, here’s the 2015 Tag Team Top 50:
1. Team IOU/The Carnies (Nick Iggy and Kerry Awful)-It finally happened, Iggy and Awful have been awarded the #1 ranking in the Tag Team Top 50. For 2 straight years they ended up at #4 in the Tag Team Top 50 and then they finally broke through to the #1 spot this year. Whether you call them their former name as Team IOU or their new name of the Carnies, you cannot deny the success of this tag team this year. From matches at SLA, PWF, AIW, NWA Smoky Mountain, FIP, Alpha One in Canada, and everywhere in between, their year was undoubtedly their best yet as a team. Multiple titles highlighted their year such as the PGP, NWA Southern, and AWE Tag Team Titles, but it was their consistency that was the key to their success. They collected two #1 rankings, three #2 rankings, two #3 rankings, three #5 rankings, and SIX mentions without being ranked. If 2016 was the year of the Carnies, it’s entirely possible that 2017 could be as well as they already hold the AWE Tag Team Titles once again.
2. The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter)-In the three year history of the Tag Team Top 50, Devin & Mason Cutter have known nothing but being #1. They were #1 in the 2014 Tag Team Top 50 and again in 2015. This year they were beaten out by their rivals in Team IOU/The Carnies, but that didn’t mean their year wasn’t still AMAZING once again. In 2016 these bearded bullies held a slew of tag team champions including the AAW Tag Team Titles, the ZERO1 USA World Tag Team Titles, the FIP World Tag Team Titles, and more. They once again were the true road warriors of the indies as they traveled everywhere they possibly could. In 2016 they had one #1 ranking, three #2 rankings, two #4 rankings, three #5 rankings, and three mentions without being ranked. With them ending up at #2 this year, look out for them to push even harder to get back to what they view as their rightful place at the top of the Tag Team Top 50 in 2017.
3. Roscoe Eat Lisa (Mikey McFinnegan & Zakk Sawyers)-Despite being together for a couple of years now, 2016 was truly a coming out party for REL. Bark, Bark Gator Tits was their cry as they hit the road (many times with The Hooligans) all over the indies in 2016. While they held multiple titles, one of the highlights for them had to be being the last team to hold the SLA Tag Team Titles as they beat Team IOU on 11/18/16 to retain the gold one last time. In 2016 they had one #1 ranking, three #2 rankings, two #3 rankings, one #5 ranking, and two mentions without being ranked. If this tag team continues to travel the world improving as much as they did in 2016, there’s absolutely no doubt that they’ll be back and contending for a top spot in the 2017 Tag Team Top 50. Don’t sleep on these fellas.
4. Da Hit Squad (Dan Maff & Monsta Mack)-We’ve said it all of 2016, but it truly is incredible to the resurgence this tag team had on the indies this past year. Very few people could have expected this type of success from Maff & Mack after all these years of kicking ass and taking names. From Beyond Wrestling to winning the titles at CZW to winning a huge cage match at JAPW, their 2016 was extraordinary. They racked up three #1 rankings (the most of any team in 2016) one #3 ranking, one #4 ranking, and two mentions without being ranked. As it appears they will continue to do their thing together in 2017, you can’t help but wonder if they’ll continue picking up huge wins this year once again.
5. Speed of Sounds/Yapper Man #1 & #2 (Tsutomu Oosugi & Hercules Senga)-Whether they were teaming as the Speed of Sounds in promotions like Big Japan or DDT or they were teaming as Yapper Man #1 and #2 at Michinoku Pro, their year in Japan was absolutely phenomenal. Like Chris Hero in the IPR 100, the only thing that really held them back from even more rankings was likely their lack of championship gold. That said, in 2016 they had one #1 ranking, one #2 ranking, one #3 ranking, one #4 ranking, and SIX mentions without being ranked. It already appears that they’re on the path to the Tag Team Top 50 once again in 2017.
