Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of August 29th, 2016

#1 VerserK (Shingo Takagi & Naruki Doi)-This week’s #1 spot wasn’t that difficult to decide. The official voters all went one way and it’s impossible not to when you have a Dragon Gate team that goes 6-0. This team was amazing as they defeated Tribe Vanguard (YAMATO and Kzy) then defeated Jimmyz (Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!! and Jimmy Susumu) then defeated Tribe Vanguard (BxB Hulk and Kzy) on 8/24, then defeated Masaaki Mochizuki and Takehiro Yamamura, then teamed with YASSHI on 8/27 to defeat Jimmyz (Jimmy Kagetora, Jimmy Susumu & Ryo Jimmy Saito) and then teamed with Cyber Kong & Mondai Ryu on 8/28 to defeat Over Generation (CIMA, Gamma & Punch Tominaga) & U-T to finish off the clean sweep of the week. The dominance of this duo was uncanny over the weekend as they continued to improve their standing in the Tag Team Top 50 with their ranking this week.

#2 Eita & Dragon Kid-Dragon Gate ALSO gets the second spot in the Tag Team Top 5 as Eita & Dragon Kid were almost as successful as VerserK. They teamed with CIMA at Dragon Gate on 8/22 to defeat Jimmyz (Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!! and Jimmy Susumu) then defeated T-Hawk and Hyou Watanabe on 8/23, then teamed with Gamma on 8/24 to defeat YAMATO, Don Fujii and Shun Watanabe, then teamed with Gamma on 8/27 to defeat Don Fujii, Hyou Watanabe & Masaaki Mochizuki, and then fought Tribe Vanguard (BxB Hulk & YAMATO) to a draw on 8/28 to go 4-0-1 for the week. Pretty incredible week for the Dragon Gate promotion as a whole as they easily grabbed the top two spots this week.

#3 Roscoe Eat Lisa (Mikey McFinnegan & Zakk Sawyers @RoscoeEatLisa)-This unique pairing just continues to have a truly BREAKOUT year as they won another set of tag team titles when they defeated The Cause (Mr. Gelistico & Mr. Caster) at SLA on 8/26 to win the Saint Louis Anarchy Tag Team Titles. They followed that up with another win at SLA as they teamed with Austin Blackburn to defeat The Cause (Danny Adams, Evan Gelistico, & Everett Connors) to go 2-0 for the week. This ranking did nothing but improve their chances of securing a possible #1 ranking in the Tag Team Top 50 this year as the race for #1 just continues to heat up.

#4 Mecha Mercenary & Aaron Biggs-The CWF Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Champions had a solid week with two title defenses as they defeated Aric Andrews & Lee valiant on 8/27 and then “White” Mike Jordan & Mr. Grimm on 8/28 to go 2-0 for the week. With as frequently as CWF Mid-Atlantic runs shows, this tag team could really start making a push for a good spot in the Tag Team Top 50 if they can continue to win matches and defend their titles on a consistent basis for the promotion.

#5 The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter @BeardedBullys)-Chalk up another couple of wins and another set of tag team titles for one of the most decorated tag teams on the indies over the last 5 years. On 8/26 they defeated arch-rivals The Viking War Party (Alex Rudolph & Jake Parnell) at FLW to win the Zero1 USA Tag Team Titles and then beat Bonu$ Boys at FLW in a non-title match on 8/27 to go 2-0 for the week. The Hooligans continue to inch closer to a possible third straight year at #1 in the Tag Team Top 50. They definitely have some STRONG competition trying to keep that from happening.

People’s Champs. The Fellowship (GA West & Ronnie Ribs @LineageMatters)-The perennial People’s Champs return to a familiar spot at the top of the online voting competition after outlasting a lot of other great teams with 148 votes. They got on the poll with a dominant weekend as they beat War Court and Dom-n-Nat in a Triple Threat at MAW on 8/27 and then the Weekend Warriors at RICW on 8/28. You can follow them on Twitter and find out where they’ll be competing week-to-week at:

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of August 29th, 2016

#1 Cody Rhodes (@CodyRhodes)-We thoughts perhaps his first weekend at EVOLVE would be his chance to get his first #1, but he turned this weekend into a historic one with some of the victories he pulled off. Cody Rhodes jumps right into the 2016 IPR 100 conversation with his first #1 ranking as he scored impressive wins over Brian Anthony, Mike Bennett, Kurt Angle, and Sami Callihan last week. NEW played host to some huge dream matches as Cody Rhodes continued to turn away the competition to prove that he’s not just on the indies to make appearances and not work hard…he’s here to prove he’s just as talented as anyone else out there. He did just that with this EASY #1 ranking after a dominant 4-0 week.

#2 Marty Scurll (@MartyScurll)-The meteoric rise of “The Villain” Marty Scurll continues this week with yet another #2 ranking in 2016. The Progress World Champion defeated Moose at RPW in the UK on 8/26, then beat Emil Sitoci at wXw in Germany on 8/27, and then came back to the UK where he beat Mark Andrews on 8/28 to retain the title. A 3-0 weekend and a clean sweep of the continent of Europe earns Marty Scurll his THIRD #2 ranking in 2016. It has been an amazing year for Marty Scurll and it appears that he’s really just getting started.

#3 Drew Galloway (@GallowaySpeaks)-Despite so many commitments all over the place, Drew Galloway still shines any time he gets to appear on the indies. ½ of the EVOLVE Tag Team Champions defeated Davey Blaze at BCW in the UK on 8/26, then beat Joe Hendry, Jack Jester, & EC3 in a Four-Way at SWE on 8/27, and then teamed with Jack Jester & Lionheart at ICW on 8/28 to defeat The Pinky Party (Noam Dar, Grado, & Sha Samuels) to go 3-0 for the week. Whether it’s in tag team competition or singles, Drew Galloway continues to remain relevant on the independent wrestling scene for the third year straight.

#4 Joey Vendetta-A 4-0 week nets Joey Vendetta the highest ranking he’s ever had. In fact, this is the first time Vendetta has cracked the Top 10. He had one hell of a week as he defeated Tyrone Tyrone Ironside at RCW in Canada on 8/24, then defeated Britton Bayliss on 8/25, then defeated Jake Fury on 8/26, and then defeated AC Hawkes on 8/27. A four win weekend is something to be proud of and a #4 ranking on a STACKED week like this is just another new accomplishment for Joey Vendetta. Look out for him if he starts making waves in some other places.

#5 Matt Hardy (@MATTHARDYBRAND)-This week was all about star power, due largely in part to some of the dream matches that NEW booked over the weekend. ½ of the HOG Tag Team Champions defeated the very talented Vinny Marseglia at NEW on 8/25 and then beat Sami Callihan at NEW on 8/27 to go 2-0 for the week. Two big victories. Obvious star power. Although he may be a polarizing individual to many, Matt Hardy absolutely earned his #5 ranking this week.

#6 Kongo Kong

#7 Anthony Henry

#8 Darius Lockhart

#9 Colt Cabana

#10 Jake De Leon

People’s Champ. Gunner Miller (@RealGunnerM11)-After several VERY close battles this year, Gunner Miller FINALLY wins the People’s Champ award as he collected 361 of the 1,337 votes to win the online voting competition this week. He got on the poll when he won the WWW Heavyweight Title by defeating Stryknyn on 8/27. His fans and supporters took care of the rest as he outdistanced Thomas Walton III to bring home his very first People’s Champ award. You can check him out on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/RealGunnerM11
