Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of June 26th, 2017

#1 Lucha Brothers (Rey Fenix & Penta El Zero M)- And this high-flying tag team is BACK again in the Tag Team Top 5! Not only are they back, they’re sitting at #1 for a second time this year. The PWG World Tag Team Champions, as heard on the Tag Team Top 50 Mid-Year Update podcast, have been tearing their way into this year’s Top 50 tag teams and this ranking will only push them further up the ladder. On 6/23 they defeated La Mascara & M-ximo at The Crash in Mexico and then followed that up by defeating reDRagon (Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly) at WrestleCircus on 6/24 to go 2-0 for the week. This was a clean sweep of the official voters to polish off another fantastic week for the duo. Keep an eye on the rankings going forward to find out just how far they can push themselves into the hunt for #1 in this year’s Tag Team Top 50!

#2 CCK (Chris Brookes & Kid Lykos)-One up and one down for the current CZW World and Attack! Pro Tag Team Champions as they defeated British Strong Style (Trent Seven & Tyler Bate) at PROGRESS on 6/25 to win the titles. This team has been making HUGE waves on the UK indies lately and this weekend was just another example of that fact. This is a team who, again as heard on the Tag Team Top 50 Mid-Year Reveal, are already in the Tag Team Top 50 and are starting to climb ever closer to one of the top spots in this year’s Tag Team Top 50. With 3 titles now to their credit, they’re going to be a force to reckon with the rest of the year.

#3 410 Massiv (Andrew Cash & RD Cordova)

#4 Zero Gravity (Brett Gakiya & CJ Esparza)

#5 Roppongi Vice (Beretta & Rocky Romero)

People’s Champs. The Hounds of Hades (Jackson & Austin Shadows)-The Hounds of Hades become one of the truly rare teams to become win the online voting competition in back-to-back weeks. With 72 votes to their names, the Shockwave and AIWF Edge Tag Team Champions won in a pretty close competition vs. runners up such as 410 Massiv and Indy Card Mafia. Their victory from the fan vote was obviously not their only win as they got on the poll by beating Cruise Kyntrol on 6/24 to retain the AIWF Edge Titles. While they didn’t quite crack the Mid-Year Tag Team Top 50, they have plenty of time to make up ground and cement themselves among the elite tag teams for 2017. You can like their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/TheHoundsOfHades/ and follow them on Instagram @hounds_of_hades

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of June 26th, 2017

#1 Rey Fenix (@ReyFenixMx)-It was a crazy day for the Indy Power Rankings crew as we were all scrambling to get results in as soon as possible. One result that came late and didn’t even get added to the poll was Fenix’s victory at the Border War Tournament at Mucha Lucha Atlanta. Fenix, who beat Sammy Guevera in the First round, Penta El Zero M and Mil Muertes in a Three-Way Semi, and Dragon Azteca Jr. (Rey Horus) in the Finals to win the tournament, had an INSANE weekend. In addition to his 3-0 record in singles, he picked up two tag team victories as well, teaming with Penta El Zero M to defeat La Mascara & M-ximo at The Crash in Mexico on 6/23 and then beat reDRagon at Wrestlecircus on 6/24. Those 5 very impressive victories led him to the #1 spot as every single official voter had him at #1 on their ballots.

#2 Shane Strickland (@StricklandShane)-1/3 of the Lucha Underground Trios Champions and NEW WrestleCircus RingMaster Champion was ever so close to being the #1 this week. In fact, he WAS #1 until the late results for Fenix came in. That said, #2 is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of as “Swerve” defeated Dezmond Xavier, Lio Rush and Mr. 450 in a four-way ladder match at WrestleCircus on 6/24 and then defeated Brian Cage and Sammy Guevara in a three-way the same day to win the title to go 2-0 for the week. His wins were incredibly impressive, but at the end of the day, he had two singles victories vs. three singles victories for Fenix in addition to two tag team victories. It’s been a little while since we saw Strickland so high in the rankings, but there’s no doubt that it’s a welcome sight!

#3 Dale Patricks (@DalePatricks)-The real life version of Jackass has been quietly tearing it up on the Death Match scene over the last 1-2 years. Despite his proficiency in Death Matches, do not overlook his ability in any kind of contest. Over the weekend he defeated Red Rocket at WCWO on 6/23, then defeated Dominic Garrini in the first round of the Dynamite Cup at Live Pro Wrestling in Lafayette, IN, and then beat Kerry Awful, Nick Iggy, Percy Davis, Mance Warner, and Ace Perry in a 6-Man Scramble to win the tournament to go 3-0 for the week. On any other week, this could have been enough to get him a #1 ranking, but this week was ultra-competitive. Look out for Dale Patricks to continue this type of success as the second half of 2017 begins.

#4 Tetsuya Endo-Tournaments once again play a major factor in the Indy Power Rankings and that’s evident in rankings 1-4. Endo defeated Akito at Dramatic Dream Team in the first round on 6/25; then defeated HARASHIMA the same day in the final to win the King of DDT Tournament to go 2-0 for the week. Like so many others in the rankings this week, Endo had a strong argument for the #1 spot in this week’s Indy Power Rankings, but for now he’ll have to settle for #4. With such a big victory and ranking on his side, he’ll have a chance to build on this ranking in the upcoming months.

#5 Zack Sabre Jr. (@zacksabrejr)-Last year’s #1 in the 2016 IPR 100 scored perhaps the biggest single victory of the weekend when he beat Matt Riddle in a non-title Champion vs. Champion Match at EVOLVE on 6/24. It was a HUGE victory between last year’s IPR 100 #1 and this year’s frontrunner for the #1 in the IPR 100. The PWG, EVOLVe, and RevPro British Heavyweight Champion failed to sweep the week which ultimately cost him a shot at the #1 ranking. He was defeated by Ultimo Ninja at Martinez Entertainment on 6/23 the day before his big victory, then bounced back vs. Riddle, and then finished off the week strong when he beat Jaka on 6/25. It was a 2-1 week and most times that won’t equal a ranking, but with a victory as strong as the one over Riddle, ZSJ gets the #5 spot this week.

#6 Timothy Thatcher

#7 Ken Malmsteen

#8 Matt Cross

#9 Rey Horus

#10 People’s Champ. Devin Driscoll (@Devin_Driscoll)-Devin Driscoll used his tremendous victories to turn his third People’s Champ award (2nd this year) into an official ranking among a field of elite talent. He defeated Donovan Dijak at Black Hole Slam on 6/20, then beat Michael Elgin by DQ the same day, and then beat Abyss in an Unadvertised Street Fight to go 3-0 for the week. Even without the fan vote, he definitely deserved a spot in the Top 10, but his fans made sure to solidify his ranking for him. With 112 votes this week, he edged out JT Funk for the top spot in the online voting competition, proving once again how popular this talent is. Be sure to follow him on Instagram @DevinDriscoll

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of June 19th, 2017

#1 The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson)-Don’t let the picture fool you. Despite their success in ROH and New Japan, this ranking is solely based on the independents over the last week. Well, that combined with their prestige as a team and the usual things that we look at when our official voters put together their ballots week after week. That said, Matt and Nick Jackson, the ROH World and IWGP Junior Tag Team Champions had a FANTASTIC weekend on the indies as they defeated The Spirit Squad (Kenny & Mikey) at House of Hardcore in Australia on 6/16, then defeated Tommy Dreamer & Billy Gunn on 6/17, and then defeated The Spirit Squad again on 6/18 to go 3-0 for the week. The Bucks continue to prove that when they work in promotions that are eligible for our rankings, they are almost unparalleled.

#2 The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter @BeardedBullys)-It feels great to see a healthy Mason Cutter teaming with Devin again and picking up wins and even more titles. The 2014 and 2015 Tag Team Top 50 #1’s and current FIP Tag Team Champions added the Rockstar Pro Titles (again) to their new collection as they defeated Night Ryderz (Dustin Rayz & Alex Colon) at Rockstar Pro on 6/14 to win the vacant titles and then beat Matt Tremont and Teddy Stigma at Full Impact Pro on 6/17 to retain the titles to go 2-0 for the week. Had it not been for the incredible week by the Young Bucks, The Hooligans likely would have been almost the consensus #1 this week. That said, the Cutters are in prime position to make another run in this year’s year-end Tag Team Top 50. Find out where they are in the mid-year update next Wednesday at 3 PM Eastern!

#3 Polo Promotions (Jackie Polo & Mark Coffey)

#4 Modern Day Savages (Aleki & Ati)

#5 People’s Champs. The Hounds of Hades (Jackson & Austin Shadows)-We get our first ranking from the Shadows as the Shockwave and AIWF Edge Tag Team Champions helped their own cause by winning the online voting competition and edging out #CCK (due to having more fan votes to break the tie) to slide into the Tag Team Top 5. They got on the poll as they defeated Bad Blood at Shockwave on 6/17 to retain the titles. If they can keep on winning and defending titles, they’ll likely be seen again in the rankings. You can like their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/TheHoundsOfHades/ and follow them on Instagram @hounds_of_hades

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of June 19th, 2017

#1 Anthony Henry (@AntnyHenry)-It’s another #1 ranking after another huge weekend for Anthony Henry as he won the most recent WWN Styles Battle at FIP. After a breakout year in 2016, he continued to make a name for himself over the weekend as the PWX Heavyweight Champion defeated Matt Tremont in the first round at WWN Style Battle on 6/16, then defeated Joey Janela in the second round, then defeated Fred Yehi in the final the same day to win the tournament. He then defeated Maxwell Jacob Friedman at Full Impact Pro on 6/17 to go 4-0 for the week. He swept the official voters’ ballots this week as every official voter marked him down as their #1 and he came in second in the online voting competition as fans rallied behind the young star. Look out for him to continue this type of success as 2017 rolls on!

#2 Matt Riddle (@SuperKingofBros)-Matt Riddle has had an unparalleled 2017 so far and he’s back in the rankings again this week after a very good weekend for the WWN and PROGRESS Atlas Champion. First, he defeated Martin Stone at WWN Style Battle on 6/16 to retain the title, then defeated Jon Davis at Full Impact Pro to retain the WWN title again, then defeated Hallowicked at Chikara on 6/18 in the first round of the Johnny Kidd Invitational Tournament, and then took his only loss off the weekend as he lost to Juan Francisco de Coronado in the semifinals the same day to go 3-1 for the week. Despite the loss, the official voters saw two title defenses and some very good quality of opponents. Riddle ends up at #2 this week. Not too shabby.

#3 Sami Callihan (@TheSamiCallihan)-The stars are out in the Indy Power Rankings this week as numbers 1-3 all hold major titles. The AAW Heavyweight (and Pro Wrestling 2.0 Heavyweight Champion) defeated Matt Sydal at Pro Wrestling Guerilla on 6/16 and then defeated Michael Elgin at AAW on 6/17 to retain the title to go 2-0 for the week. While he didn’t have quite as many wins as Henry or Riddle this week, you can’t overlook the quality of his opponents as Sydal and Elgin are two worldwide stars on the indies right now. “The Callihan Death Machine” continues to make waves wherever he competes.

#4 Travis Banks (@Travis_BanksPW)-Much like the talents above him in this week’s Top 10, Travis Banks has had a phenomenal 2017. The former Indy Power Rankings #1 and current Lucha Forever, Fight Club PRO and 1/2 of RevPro British Tag Team Champions defeated Mark Haskins at Lucha Forever on 6/13 to retain the title, then defeated Glamorous Roddy at Pro Wrestling Malta on 6/17, then defeated Mark Haskins and Shane Strickland in a triple threat at Lucha Forever on 6/18 to retain again to go 3-0 for the week. Travis Banks continues to make a huge push up the ladder of this year’s IPR 100.

#5 Rory Gulak-The “other Gulak” gets his first ranking in the Indy Power Rankings this week after winning the Johnny Kidd Invitational Tournament with a 3-0 record for the week. He defeated Travis Huckabee at Chikara in the first round on 6/18, then defeated Zack Sabre Jr in the semifinals, and then defeated Juan Francisco de Coronado in the final to win the tournament. It was a tremendous weekend for one of the truly unsung talents on the indies right now as he appears to be looking to get his name on everyone’s radars as 2017 continues.

#6 Riker

#7 Samantha Starr

#8 MVP

#9 El Ligero

#10 People’s Champ. Eddie Toon-The Rocket City Championship Wrestling Southern Heavyweight Champion gets his first official ranking AND his first win in the online voting competition this week. He got on the ballot by defeating Chris Rage in a Dog Chain Match on 6/17 to retain the title. 51 votes later and he outlasted this week’s official #1 Anthony Henry to win the People’s Champ award for the week as his fans came together to support him and push him into the Top 10. This is not Eddie Toon’s first mention in the Indy Power Rankings and with that type of fan support, it may not be his last.
