Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of October 26th, 2015

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of October 26th, 2015

#1 Team Proving Ground Pro (Team IOU @TeamIOU & Jake Dirden @PGPWrestling)-FIP’s Fallout Tournament was discussed on our Tag Team Top 5 Reveal last week and we pretty much said that whoever won that tournament almost had a guaranteed #1 ranking this week. Well, that came to fruition in almost a complete sweep of the voters. The official voters ALL voted for Team PGP at #1 while the fans almost got them to #1 in the online voting competition with 106 votes. That being said, this team was 4-0 over the weekend and scored some huge wins along the way in the tournament. First, they defeated Team ACW (Jason Cade, Jayson Falcone & Sideshow) at FIP in the first round on 10/23, then defeated Team Maryland Championship Wrestling (Lio Rush, Ken Dixon, and Joey Keys) in the second round on 10/24, then defeated Team Freelance Wrestling (Isaias Velasquez, Matt Knicks, and Chris Castro) in the semifinals the same night, and then defeated Team Tier 1 Wrestling (Sonny Kiss, Rude Boy Riley, and Alex Mason) in the final the same night. Team IOU are known for racking up rankings but with Jake Dirden on their side, you may see Team IOU TWICE in the year-end Tag Team Top 50.

#2 The Heatseekers (Sigmon & Elliott Russell)-For the second time this team gets a #2 ranking and honestly, on any other week (literally any other week just about) they would have been #1. The NWA World Tag Team Champions added more gold to their collection as they won the AML Tag Team Titles in the Cornette Cup over the weekend. They won the Gauntlet Style Tournament by first beating Nuclear Kaasarole, then American Wolves, and then the Washington Bullets. This team beat some of the best tag teams on the indies to win these titles and we have to tip our caps to one of the truly underappreciated tag teams on the indies as they continue their push towards this year’s Tag Team Top 50.

#3 Monster Express (Masato Yoshino & T-Hawk)-Same stable. Different combination. That’s pretty much been the entire 2015 for the Monster Express stable in Dragon Gate. This duo defeated VerserK (Naruki Doi and Kotoka) at Dragon Gate on 10/19, then defeated Jimmyz (Jimmy Susumu and Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!!) on 10/22, then teamed with Drastik Boy on 10/24 to defeat Jimmyz ( Jimmy Susumu, Ryo “Jimmy” Saito and Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!!) and then defeated Jimmyz (Ryo “Jimmy” Saito and Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!!) on 10/25 to go 4-0 for the week. With 6 straight victories as a team, can this combination push their way into the Tag Team Top 50 to go along with all the other potential combinations from Monster Express? Not much time left to make that big push!

#4 Team Tier 1 Wrestling (Alex Mason, Rude Boy Riley, & Sonny Kiss)-Despite falling short in the Finals, the official voters showed a tremendous amount of respect to the runner-ups of the FIP Fallout Tournament over the weekend. They even beat arguably better teams along the way than Team PGP. Check it out: They defeated Team PWX (Corey Hollis, Ethan Case & John Skyler) at FIP on 10/23 in the first round, then defeated Submission Squad (Gary Jay, Evan Gelistico, and Austin Blackburn) on 10/24 in the second round, then defeated Viking War Party (Alexander Rudolph, Frank Wyatt, and Jake Parnell) in the semifinals, and then lost to Team Proving Ground Pro (Jake Dirden, Nick Iggy, and Kerry Awful) in the final to go 3-1 for the week. Any of their 3 victories could be considered an upset, but they still continued to press on and earned a ranking from their fantastic showing.

#5 Snake Pit (Shynron & Ophidian)-This CHIKARA pair makes a splash in the Top 5 as they teamed with Eddie Kingston at CHIKARA on 10/22 to defeat The United Nations (Juan Francisco de Coronado, Prakash Sabar & The Proletariat Boar Of Moldova) and then defeated The Gentleman’s Club (Drew Gulak & Orange Cassidy) on 10/24 to go 2-0 for the week. Pretty impressive wins earn them a ranking. With CHIKARA being similar to Dragon Gate in that tags are so important, can this team find their way into the Tag Team Top 50 at the end of the year?

People’s Champs. Better Men (AC Riley & Mario Andrew Crivello)-Gotta give it up to this tag team and to the area in which they wrestle. This isn’t the first time that the Wisconsin area has done well in the online voting competition and it likely won’t be the last. This team earned their way onto the poll by defeating Chase McCoy (1/2 of Insane Evil) in a Handicap Match to win the ICW Tag Team Titles on 10/24. While the victory isn’t as strong as some of the others on our list, their showing in the online voting competition was as they earned 136 votes to become this week’s People’s Champs.

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of October 26th, 2015

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of October 26th, 2015

#1 Princess Kimber Lee (@Kimber_Lee90)-This #1 ranking is LONG overdue for not only one of the best female wrestlers in the world, but simply one of the best wrestlers in the world…PERIOD. The Legacy Women’s Champion and ½ of the WSU/SHIMMER Tag Team Champions had a great weekend as she teamed with Los Ice Creams (El Hijo del Ice Cream & Ice Cream Jr.) at CHIKARA on 10/22 to defeat Dasher’s Dugout (Heidi Lovelace, Icarus & Mark Angelosetti) then defeated Fire Ant and Ophidian in a triple threat on 10/23, then teamed with Icarus, Mr. Touchdown, and Dasher Hatfield on 10/24 to defeat Hallowicked, NRG, and Heidi Lovelace, and then defeated Jakob Hammermeier on 10/25 to go 4-0 for the week. She has been ranked in the Top 10 many times and even in the Tag Team Top 5, but this #1 ranking has been elusive. It has finally happened and it’s WELL-DESERVED. Congratulations to the Princess of CHIKARA!

#2 Santana Garrett (@SantanaGarrett_)-The standard torch bearer for independent wrestling in 2015 gets ranked YET AGAIN. You may see her name pop up in our rankings time and time again and wonder why does Santana Garrett get so much love from the official voters? How about this? How about the insane fact that she is undefeated in her last 51 matches outside of GFW (with 50 of those matches being wins and 1 being a draw). We could argue about her strength of competition all day, but she beats everyone in front of her in various promotions all over the world and just continues to win, win, win. This weekend was another great one as the NWA World Women’s Champion (and OPW, PRW, Battling Bombshells, Shine, NPW and CWE Women’s Champion) defeated Tammy Lynn at CCW on 10/20 to retain the NWA title, then teamed with Hiroyo Matsumoto at Stardom in Japan on 10/25 to defeat Thunder Rock (Io Shirai and Mayu Iwatani) then teamed with Hiromi Mimura again the same day to defeat Kris Wolf & Datura to go 3-0 for the week. No matter where she goes, Santana Garrett just wins. Period.

#3 Martin Kirby (@MKirbyProEgo)-This is the highest ranking ever for one of the UK’s very best talents. He defeated LJ Heron at HOPE on 10/23, then defeated Chris Tyler, Mark Andrews and Pete Dunne in a #1 contenders match at SWE on 10/24, and then defeated Dick Riley at Kamikaze Pro on 10/25 to go 3-0 for the week. Kirby may get a lot of recognition for his tag team victories, but this week was all about him as he bumped out a lot of solid competition for a Top 3 ranking, which is damn impressive in itself. Add to it that it’s the highest ranking yet for Kirby and you see why things are looking up heading into the end of 2015 for him.

#4 Gran Akuma (@_AKUMA)-Incomplete results is likely the only thing that cost Gran Akuma an even higher ranking this week after he won the OnPoint Wrestling Masters of the Mat Tournament on 10/24. With a 3-0 record he won the tournament, but unfortunately the only result we were able to nail down was that he defeated Steve Scott in the first round. Had we had the full results, it’s very possible that Gran Akuma would have had his very first #1 ranking this week. That being said, Akuma still gets a very high ranking and has some time to build on it before the end of 2015.

***We later found out Gran Akuma beat Tony Deppen and Sam Shields also***

#5 Joseph Schwartz (@GearsofSchwartz)-Speaking of just missing out on a #1 ranking, Schwartz had it locked up had it not been for his loss at IWA Mid-South on Friday vs. Corporal Robinson in a Handicap Match. That being said, he still gets a Top 5 ranking, which is still impressive. Joseph Schwartz is having one of the best years of his career and added to it when he beat JJ Venom in the first round of the VIP Victory Cup Tournament, then defeated FIA in the semifinals, and then defeated Jimmy Shalwin in the final to win the Victory Cup tournament and the vacant VIP Heavyweight title to go 3-1 for the week. With a battle with Davey Richards coming up, look for Schwartz to try to capitalize on this high ranking.

#6 Caleb Konley (@calebkonley)-The FIP World Champion had been conspicuous by his absence recently, but he turned that all around after he felt very snubbed by the FIP brass over the weekend. He showed up at the Fallout Tournament and beat Jody Kristofferson on 10/23 to retain the title and then beat Corey Hollis & John Skyler at SoW on 10/24 to go 2-0 for the week. Caleb is quietly having a very good year, but perhaps not the type of year that he had hoped for? Only he can say, but regardless he’s still doing his thing all over the country.

#7 Marty Scurll (@MartyScurll)-We get more British representation in the Top 10 as the UPW UK Heavyweight Champion (and NWA British Heavyweight Champion) defeated Charleston at UPW UK on 10/23 and then defeated Trevor Lee at RPW on 10/25 to go 2-0 for the week. Scurll, like Kirby, is one of the UK’s top talents and continues to get recognition from our official voters. This week was such a tossup that you had to really look at who certain people beat and a win over Trevor Lee surely turned some heads.

#8 Masato Tanaka-This impressive year for Masato Tanaka and the career resurgence continues as he gets ranked yet again this week. He defeated Davey Boy Smith Jr at NOAH on 10/24 and then defeated Quiet Storm on 10/25 to go 2-0 for the week. While there were no titles on the lines or big tournaments to fall back on, you have to look at who we’re ranking and who he beat. Both are pretty top notch and thus, Masato Tanaka finds his way into the Top 10 once again.

#9 Akira Tozawa (@TozawaAkira)-Tozawa’s AMAZING 2015 continues as he gets ranked again after showing why he is representing Dragon Gate as the Open the Brave Gate and Open the Owarai Gate Champion. He defeated Kaito Ishida at Dragon Gate on 10/19, then teamed with Shachihoko BOY on 10/22 to lose to Big R Shimizu and La Flamita, then defeated Yosuke (loves) Santa Maria on 10/24, and then defeated Kzy on 10/25 to go 3-1 for the week. While it wasn’t his usual flawless week, it does get him another ranking on his quest for the #1 spot in the year-end IPR 100.

#10 Shelton Benjamin (@Sheltyb803)-The former WWE Intercontinental Champion gets a rare ranking this week after a solid week out in Japan. It was a very busy week for Shelton as he teamed with Minoru Suzuki, Taichi, TAKA Michinoku & Takashi Iizuka at NOAH on 10/22 to defeat Akitoshi Saito, Mitsuhiro Kitamiya, Naomichi Marufuji, Super Crazy & Zack Sabre Jr., then teamed with Davey Boy Smith Jr., Lance Archer & Minoru Suzuki on 10/23 to defeat BRAVE (Katsuhiko Nakajima & Takashi Sugiura), Akitoshi Saito & Colt Cabana, then defeated Takashi Iizuka on 10/23, then defeated Takashi Iizuka by DQ on 10/24, and then teamed with Davey Boy Smith Jr, Taichi & Taka Michinoku on 10/25 to lose to Naomichi Marufuji, Colt Cabana, Taiji Ishimori and Zack Sabre Jr. to go 4-1 for the week. Not a perfect week by any means, but with 5 matches and an 80% win percentage, Shelton is impossible to ignore this week.

People’s Champ. Apocalypse (@AwesomeApoc)-We get some new blood in the People’s Champ chair as Apocalypse added his name to the list after he won the CIW Heavyweight Title after he beat Jackson Stone on 10/24 at CIW and then won a Battle Royal for the vacant title. The online voting competition was pretty competitive this week, but in the end Apocalypse pulled away with 95 votes from his fans and supporters. Congrats to Apocalypse on his first victory in the online voting competition!

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of October 19th, 2015

IMG_1560

#1 Strong BJ/BJ Strong (Daisuke Sekimoto & Yuji Okabayashi)-A 5-0 week at Big Japan nets this tag team another #1 ranking after being absent from the top spot in the Top 5 for quite a few months. After being ranked #3 last week, this team teamed with Harashima at BJW on 10/12 to defeat Daichi Hashimoto, Hideyoshi Kamitani & Kazuki Hashimoto, then teamed with Atsushi Maruyama on 10/13 to defeat Daichi Hashimoto, Hideyoshi Kamitani & Kazuki Hashimoto, then defeated Hideyoshi Kamitani and Yoshihisa Uto on 10/14, then defeated Hideyoshi Kamitani and Atsushi Maruyama on 10/15, and then teamed with Atsushi Maruyama to beat Yuko Miyamoto, Hideyoshi Kamitani and Yoshihisa Uto on 10/16 to go 5-0 for the week. Congrats to them on a great 2015 and another great ranking.

#2 RPG Vice (Trent ? & Rocky Romero)-Although this team doesn’t have any gold to their credit together yet, they got quite a bit of support from the official voters for the top spot this week. Did quantity beat out quality? Some of the voters would say yes. Beating two solid teams at EVOLVE in TJ Perkins & Timothy Thatcher on 10/17 and Premier Athlete Brand (Anthony Nese & Caleb Konley) on 10/18 meant quite a bit, but didn’t quite have the “wow factor” of a 5-0 week like Strong BJ had. That being said, this team does get their first ranking as most of their time has been spent in New Japan which doesn’t qualify for our rankings. Hopefully we get to see more of them in the future leading to further rankings.

#3 Team IOU (Kerry Awful & Nick Iggy @TeamIOU)-It’s another week and another ranking for the PGP Tag Team Champions. The reinvented duo continue to impress as they defeated The Soul Shooters on 10/16 at PGP in what many considered an independent wrestling dream match. They then defeated James Dylan & Glenn “Chips” Matthews at AWE on 10/18 to go 2-0 for the week. This duo is really on fire right now as we’re heading down the homestretch of 2015. After having such a high ranking in the 2014 Tag Team Top 50…can this team top that ranking in 2015? They’ve got a bit of work to do but there’s no doubt that they’re up for the challenge. Next stop is FIP’s Fallout 6-Man Tournament representing PGP this weekend.

#4 Monster Express (Akira Tozawa & Masato Yoshino)-This Dragon Gate stable continues to have an outstanding 2015 as they rack up wins almost every single week. They get back into the tag team rankings this week after they teamed with T-Hawk on 10/12 at Dragon Gate to defeat Jimmyz (Jimmy K-ness JKS, Jimmy Susumu & Ryo Jimmy Saito) and then defeated Dia.HEARTS (BxB Hulk & Flamita) on 10/13 to go 2-0 for the week. No stable in Dragon Gate has been more dominant than Monster Express and this particular pairing might be the best of the group. With 9 of their last 10 matches being victories, look out for them to continue the strong push towards the top of the Tag Team Top 50.

#5 Polo Promotions (Mark Coffey & Jackie Polo)-After being ranked #4 last week, this team fell slightly but it wasn’t due to lack of trying. First they defeated The 55 (Kid Fite & Sha Samuels) at ICW on 10/17 to retain the ICW Tag Team Titles and then beat the UK Hooligans on 10/18 in a non-title match. They are also the current SWA Tag Team Champions and have won an astounding 18 straight matches. Not an easy fete in an area (the UK) where there are a lot of great tag teams to compete with every single week.

People’s Champs. Detroit vs. Everybody (Cassidy Cain @DatCassidyCain & Jon’tae Keith)-This tag team gets their second People’s Champs award this year and third overall as they cruised to a win in the online voting competition with 128 votes. They defeated Brandon Xavier & Big Moe at WBW on 10/17 to get on the poll and capitalized with yet another victory in the online fan vote. Congrats to this young, hungry team!

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of October 19th, 2015

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of October19th, 2015

#1 Deonna Purrazzo (@DeonnaPurrazzo)-Last year Tessa Blanchard received a #2 ranking after winning the first annual ECWA Super 8 ChickFight Tournament. This year it nets Deonna Purrazzo her first ranking…which is a #1 ranking. She is the NEW ECWA Women’s Champion as well as the tournament winner. She defeated Ariela Nyx at GCW on 10/16, then beat Miranda Vionette in the first round, then defeated Brittany Blake in the semifinals, and then defeated Tessa Blanchard in the finals. A 4-0 weekend gets her a GREAT ranking after winning a tournament that is becoming prestigious in a hurry.

#2 Bad Bones John Klinger (@TheGermanPsycho)-It’s good to be Bad Bones when it comes to our rankings apparently. He had a fantastic weekend as he won the SWE King of Switzerland Title. He defeated Tommaso Ciampa at SWE in Switzerland on 10/16, then defeated Diabolo the same night to win the title, then defeated Tommaso Ciampa again at wXw in Germany on 10/17, and then teamed with Absolute Andy & Big Ryck (Ezekiel Jackson) at wXw on 10/18 to defeat Karsten Beck & Reich Und Schön (Kevin Roadster & Marius van Beethoven) to go 4-0 for the week. Bad Bones is once again having an amazing year keeping his claim as “the best in Europe.”

#3 Vinny Marseglia (@VINNYINKED)-Had he gotten ANY fan votes whatsoever, he could have competed for the #2 spot this week but the tiebreaker went to Bad Bones with the fan vote advantage after the official voters were deadlocked. Marseglia won the 2015 TRP Killer Kowalski Cup on 10/16 as he defeated Craig Costa in the first round; then defeated Matt Magnum in the semifinals and then defeated Kongo (not to be confused with Kongo Kong) in the final to win the tournament to go 3-0 for the week. This was the first ranking for Marseglia since early 2014 and it’s a damn good one.

#4 Johnny Gargano (@JohnnyGargano)-The Smash Champion gets back in the rankings this week as he defeated Amazing Red at AIW on 10/16 and then beat Ethan Page at EVOLVE in an I Quit Match (in a match that Gargano would be forced to leave EVOLVE if he lost). His 2-0 record might be somewhat light compared to some others in the Top 10, but considering his name value and strength of competition this week, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be this high proving once again that “Johnny Wrestling” is still at or near the top of the indies.

#5 Drew Galloway (@GallowaySpeaks)-The ICW World Heavyweight,  NEW UEWA Heavyweight Champion (and Scottish Heavyweight Champion) gets a #5 ranking for the second straight week as he defeated Chaos and Apu Singh at Maximum Wrestling in Germany to retain the ICW title and win the UEWA Title, then defeated Matt Daly at ICW on 10/17 to retain the title, then defeated Coach Trip the same day to retain the title, then defeated Kenny Williams the same day to retain the title, but then lost a triple threat to Big Damo at ICW on 10/18 to go 4-1 for the week (although for some reason he vacated the DPW title in Denmark over the weekend). Galloway was one loss away from a sure fire #1 this week, but he stays on the radar for a top spot in the year-end IPR 100 with this ranking. Not much time left to gain ground or maintain a position!

#6 Bravo Tarir-It’s a first-time ranking for Bravo Tarir as he won an interesting tournament in NHPW in Australia over the weekend. He beat Tommy Gunn in the first round, then defeated Jaxon Cross in the semifinals, and then defeated El Grande Toro in the final to win the 2015 King of Lucha on 10/17. Not very often you hear about a “King of Lucha” Tournament in Australia, but again the international influence on the Indy Power Rankings is apparent as we’ve got representation from all over the globe.

#7 Naomichi Marufuji (@noah_maru_fuji)-One of the biggest names in the Top 10 this week comes to us from NOAH as Marufuji returns to the Top 10. He defeated Takashi Sugiura at NOAH on 10/16, then teamed with Super Crazy & Zack Sabre Jr on 10/17 to defeat Suzuki-gun (Shelton Benjamin, Taichi & TAKA Michinoku) and then defeated British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith Jr on 10/17 to go 3-0 for the week. With 9 straight victories to his credit, there was no way Marufuji was missing out on the Top 10 this week.

#8 Mikey Whiplash (@Mikey_Whiplash)-Whiplash pops up in the Top 10 after a solid week in the UK where he defeated Big Damo at ICW on 10/16, then defeated Lewis Girvan on 10/17, and then defeated Lionheart at ICW on 10/18 to go 3-0 for the week. With all of his victories being in singles competition against decent competitors, Whiplash got the nod over some talents with more wins than him, but not quite as impressive. He is now undefeated in his last 8 matches (7 wins, 1 draw) and looks to continue that momentum heading into the end of the year.

#9 Naoki Tanizaki aka Mr. Kyu Kyu Toyonaka Dolphin-This is the first ranking for Tanizaki as he teamed with Shingo Takagi at Dragon Gate on 10/12 to defeat Dia.HEARTS (BxB Hulk & Masaaki Mochizuki); then defeated Kzy on 10/13, and then scored a HUGE win as he defeated Akira Tozawa on 10/17 to go 3-0 for the week. Dragon Gate has produced a ton of rankings this year and Tanizaki is just another in a long string of rankings for a promotion that just keeps churning out top talent.

#10 Mickie James (@MickieJames)-The MCW Women’s Champion returns to the Top 10 once again after she defeated Amber Rodriquez, Kimber Lee and Kennadi Brink in a four-way match at MCW on 10/16 to retain the title and then defeated Amber Rodriguez on 10/17 to retain again to go 2-0 for the week. Mickie’s name value, two title defenses, and solid strength of competition helps her sneak into the Top 10 on a week where there was a multitude of worthy contenders.

People’s Champ. Hellcat (@Hellcat420)-Hellcat continues his strong, frankly dominant performances in the online voting competition when he’s on the poll by collecting 227 votes (almost 160 votes more than the closest challenger) to become People’s Champ yet again. The KDW Heavyweight Champion (and 1/2 of UPW, IYFW and CW Tag Team Champions) defeated Ryan Cassidy on 10/17 at Upstate to retain the KDW title.
