2015 Tag Team Top 50

It’s the end of the year/start of a new one so it’s that time! Below is the first annual 2015 Tag Team Top 50 which for those of you who are unfamiliar, is a collection of 50 independent wrestling tag teams based on their previous rankings throughout the year to date. Their rankings in the Tag Team Top 50 are 100% based on where they have been ranked in the Tag Team Top 5 this year. This is not our opinion of who the best tag teams (or “workers”) in the world are based on who we think had the best matches, nor is it a list of names we sat down and collected at the end of the year. Rather, this is a mathematical compilation of how well these talents have done this year based on their rankings throughout the year and the 3 major criteria that we use to rank wrestlers on a weekly basis:

1. Win-loss record for the week & overall

2. Strength of opponents for the week

3. Overall public perception of the wrestler in question (i.e. Young Bucks have a stronger following than a regional independent wrestler who most people have never heard of)

With that being said, here’s the 2015 Tag Team Top 50:

1. The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter)-For the second straight year Devin & Mason Cutter have reached the top of the Tag Team Top 50. Last year there was some debate about whether their #1 ranking was “deserved.” There is no debate this year. They won titles in MULTIPLE promotions throughout 2015, highlighted by their current run as AAW & FIP Tag Team Champions. In 2015 they scored five #1 rankings, four #2 rankings, two #4 rankings, two #5 rankings, and six mentions without getting ranked. Just another incredible year for the Bearded Bullies from Brutalsville, U.S.A. Be sure to give them a follow on Twitter @BeardedBullys and keep track of where they’ll be as they continue to tour the world in 2016!

2. Killer Elite Squad (Davey Boy Smith Jr. & Lance Archer)-At one point in 2015 they were actually sitting at #1 in the Tag Team Top 50, but a little bit of inactivity and dropping the NWA World Tag Team Titles kept them away from the #1 spot. That being said, they did jump 27 spots from their #29 rank in 2014. They are STILL the GHC Tag Team Champions but with us no longer including NOAH in our rankings in 2016, we’re not sure if we’ll see KES back in the Tag Team Top 50, but we hope so! Hopefully they can return to the U.S. as a team and pick up some huge wins on the indies in 2016. In 2015 they had four #1 rankings, two #2 rankings, three #3 rankings, and five mentions without being ranked.

3. Monster Express (Akira Tozawa & Masato Yoshino)-Dragon Gate is known for tag team competition of all different sorts and they are especially known for their many stables. FIVE different combinations of the Monster Express were ranked in the Tag Team Top 50 this year and NINE were mentioned overall. Eight different Dragon Gate tag teams were ranked in the Tag Team Top 50, which was obviously dominated by The Monster Express stable. The standout team of that stable in 2015 was Tozawa & Yoshino as they racked up three #1 rankings, three #2 rankings, three #4 rankings, and six mentions without being ranked. With many of the voters putting a renewed focus on title wins, defenses, and BIG matches as their criteria for voting, will we see as much of Dragon Gate in the rankings in 2016?

4. Team IOU (Kerry Awful & Nick Iggy)-For the second straight year, Team IOU are #4 in the Tag Team Top 50. Was 2014 or 2015 better for Team IOU? In terms of wins and losses, 2014 was likely better, but in terms of big matches and even more name recognition, you have to give the nod to 2015. The PGP Tag Team Champions were all over the place in 2015, including FIP in Florida where they represented Proving Ground Pro with Jake Dirden winning their big 6 Man Tag Team Tournament. They were actually ranked twice in the Tag Team Top 50 as Team PGP is in the Top 50 as well. In 2015 they had one #1 ranking, three #2 rankings, one #3 ranking, one #4 ranking, three #5 rankings, and NINE mentions without being ranked. What a two-year run for the carnies. Follow @TeamIOU on Twitter and YouTube!

5. OI4K (Dave & Jake Crist)-If this is truly the last year we’ll see OI4K as a team, Dave & Jake went out with a bang. Much like KES and Monster Express, at one point in the year they ranked #1 in the Tag Team Top 50 before things slowed down and a singles focus became more apparent. From holding the JCW Tag Titles to the AAW Tag Titles to the CZW Tag Team Titles and of course all of their singles success…they had a phenomenal year together. With Jake apparently retiring, it may be the end of their run, but it was a memorable one. In 2015 they had two #1 rankings, one #2 ranking, one #3 ranking, two #4 rankings, one #5 ranking, and eight mentions without being ranked. Congrats to this tag team on an amazing career together!
