Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of December 26th, 2016

#1 Shuten Doji (KUDO, Mashiro Takanashi, & Yukio Sakaguchi)-New Year (for the rankings at least) and a new team at #1…and it’s a three-man team! This is the first-ever ranking for Shuten Doji as they enter 2017 as the first team to be #1 for the year ahead. The KO-D Six-Man Tag Team Champions defeated DAMNATION (Daisuke Sasaki, Tetsuya Endo and Mad Pauly) on 12/23 (non-title) and then defeated DAMNATION (Daisuke Sasaki, Shuji Ishikawa & Tetsuya Endo) on 12/25 to retain the titles to go 2-0 for the week. With the holiday week there were very few independent promotions running, but in Japan, that wasn’t the case as this team was one of the very few teams to gain more than one win over the span of the week. Time will tell if they can continue this momentum in the weeks and months ahead.

#2 The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter @BeardedBullys)-Well, well, well, those bearded bullies are back at it again in the 2017 rankings as the 2-time #1 team in the Tag Team Top 50 returns to the Tag Team Top 5 once again. We’re talking about a team who was #1 in 2014’s Tag Team Top 50, #2 in 2015, and…you can find out where they ranked this year here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elitepodcastnetwork/2016/12/28/indy-power-rankings-2016-tag-team-top-50-reveal

Cheap plug aside, the Rockstar Pro, FIP, and Zero1 USA Tag Team Champions took their Rockstar Pro titles to Dayton, OH where they beat the VERY talented team of Dezmond Xavier & Trey Miguel to retain the titles on 12/21. With multiple shows coming up, look out for these tag team road warriors to continue their success in 2017.

#3 Joey Ryan & Laura James-This happy couple took their show to Japan last week as they beat T2Hide (Kazuki Hirata & Sanshiro Takagi) at DDT on 12/23 and then beat Makoto Oishi & Saki Akai on Christmas Day to go 2-0 for the week. Joey is, of course, known for his teaming with Candice LeRae in years past as they were ranked in the 2015 Tag Team Top 50 together. With him gaining a #3 ranking with Laura James, will we see more of this team (in wrestling) as 2017 moves along? One thing’s for sure, their teaming in Japan is off to a great start as the New Year comes.

#4 People’s Champs. Twisted Sisterz (Thunder Rosa & Holidead)-2017’s rankings start off much like 2016 in that Twisted Sisterz are once again People’s Champs after winning the online voting competition again. The NWA Western States Tag Team Champions wrapped up their tour of Japan as they beat Queen’s Quest (HZK & Momo Watanabe) at Stardom in Japan on 12/22 to retain the titles. They collected 57 votes from their fans in order to become People’s Champs once again this week. You can catch them on the Tag Team Top 50 Reveal for 2016 here:

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elitepodcastnetwork/2016/12/28/indy-power-rankings-2016-tag-team-top-50-reveal

Give them a like on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/Twisted-Sisterz-976600145795022/?ref=py_c

#5 Speed of Sounds (Hercules Senga & Tsutomo Oosugi)-After a great 2016, 2017 looks like it could be just as good or better for Speed of Sounds as the former #1’s teamed with Takuya Nomura at Big Japan on 12/24 to defeat Brahman Kei, Brahman Shu & Tatsuhiko Yoshino and then beat Daichi Kazato & Koji Iwamoto at Basara on 12/25 to go 2-0 for the week. Big Japan has been well-known for getting tag teams into the Tag Team Top 5 and this week was obviously no different. Keep an eye on Big Japan as they continue to produce teams who win and win FREQUENTLY.

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of December 26th, 2016

#1 People’s Champ. Corey Storm (@corey_storm24)-It’s the first official rankings of the 2017 year (last week was the last of 2016) and Corey Storm did what few others have done as he won both the official voting AND the fan voting to become both the People’s Champ AND the overall #1! Storm also has the unique distinction of being the very last People’s Champ of 2016 and the first of 2017. While independent wrestling was very slow on this week, take nothing away from the WCWO Fight or Die Champion who defeated Jordan Oliver Jr. at IWA Mid-South on 12/22 and then beat Red Rocket at WCWO on 12/23 to retain the title with a 2-0 record for the week. While it’s true that Christmas week may have put a hold to a lot of independent wrestling, Corey Storm still managed to pick up two wins along with a title defense. That combined with his People’s Champ award last week led to his first-ever #1 ranking and he’s ONLY 15! Follow him on Instagram @coreystorm24

#2 Raquel (@RaquelTNA)-It’s the first of the year for our rankings and the first official ranking for ½ of the SHINE Tag Team Champions and NEW Orlando Pro Wrestling Women’s Champion. On 12/21 she teamed with Mila Naniki to defeat Axx Clover & Chico Adams. She then beat Amber Nova, Kaci Lennox, Mila Naniki, and Raegan Fire in a Five Way to win the vacant title the same night. Raquel was mentioned at the end of the year in our tag team rankings along with Santana Garrett for her tag title victory at SHINE but this is her breakthrough singles ranking as she proved to dominate the competition as she swept the number 2 spot on all of the official voters’ ballots. If this is any indication of her year to come, 2017 should be a great one.

#3 Io Shirai (@shirai_io)-This former #1 makes an immediate impact in this year’s rankings as she was the only person who stood between Corey Storm and a clean sweep of the official voters and the fan vote. Io Shirai is the only wrestler to have gotten a #1 vote (aside from Corey Storm of course) from an official voter this week. She earned it after she defeated the very capable Mayu Iwatani to retain the World of Stardom Title on 12/22. Io Shirai is an absolute beast in Japan. Be sure to catch the IPR 100 Reveal for 2016 to find out where she ranked in the year’s overall Top 100. Here’s the link to both nights-Night 1:

and Night 2″ http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elitepodcastnetwork/2016/12/28/indy-power-rankings-2016-ipr-100-reveal-night-one

and Night 2: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elitepodcastnetwork/2016/12/29/indy-power-rankings-2016-ipr-100-night-two

#4 Rina Yamashita-We get another first-time ranking coming out of Japan this week as this talent went 3-0 with a fantastic week. She defeated Rin Kadokura at Seadlinnng on 12/21, then teamed with Kaho Kobayashi at Wave on 12/25 to defeat Yumi Oka and Natsu Sumire, and then defeated Fairy Nipponbashi, Hikaru Shida, Kagetsu, Mika Iida, Misaki Ohata, Sawako Shimono and Yuu Yamagata in an eight-way elimination match at Daijo the same day to complete the sweep of the week. This is another name to look out for as 2017 gets going full swing.

#5 Ayuma Honda-It’s another first as the UWA World Middleweight Champion gets a first-time ranking as Honda defeated Dinosaur Takuma and Kotaro Yoshino in a three-way at Kaientai Dojo on 12/23 and then defeated Yuma on 12/25 to retain the title to go 2-0 for the week. Hell of a week for Honda as 2017 kicks off with a lot of first-time rankings, but as history has shown us, it’s tough to get back to the Top 10 after early success. Some wait months. Some wait years. Can Honda prove to be more than a one-hit wonder this year? Stay tuned…

#6 Isami Kodaka

#7 “Mean” Mitch Page

#8 James Drake

#9 Tripp Cassidy

#10 Matt Tremont

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of December 19th, 2016

#1 Matt Riddle & Jeff Cobb-PWG=a #1 ranking. It’s almost as simple as that, BUT as there were multiple tag matches at PWG, the tag team match between Matt Riddle & Jeff Cobb vs. the consensus best tag team of the world in The Young Bucks stood out this week. A victory AT PWG over The Bucks is huge and the official voters agreed as they almost unanimously went with Riddle & Cobb as #1 in their ballots this week. Will this #1 ranking for the new team be enough to get them into the Tag Team Top 50 for 2016? The only way to find out if they’ve made the final cut is to tune into the 2016 Tag Team Top 50 Reveal on 12/28 at 3 PM Eastern time here: http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/142608

#2 The Ugly Ducklings (Lance Lude, Rob Killjoy, & Colby Corino)-These ducks are quackin’ yet again as they once again get into the Tag Team Top 5…this time as a three-man team. This isn’t their first ranking as a trio and it probably won’t be their last. This time they get into the Top 5 after a HUGE victory at PWX as the PWX Tag Team Champions and PWF Universal Six-Man Tag Team Champions defeated OI4K (Dave Crist, Jake Crist, & Sami Callihan) at PWX on 12/18. The victory was so big that it got them the #2 spot on a week where every single spot in the Top 5 was truly up in the air. Tune in on 12/28 to see if The Ducklings are in the Tag Team Top 50, and if so, how many spots did they take? Like the Viking War Party in past years, this stable could claim multiple rankings. Tune into the 2016 Tag Team Top 50 Reveal on 12/28 at 3 PM Eastern time here: http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/142608

#3 Junior Stars (Koji Kanemoto & Minoru Tanaka)-It was really impossible to leave this team out of the Tag Team Top 5 this week as they went 3-0 in Japan where they defeated Ikuto Hidaka & Yoshikazu Yokoyama at Zero1 on 12/13, then defeated Shinjiro Otani & Kazuki Hashimoto on 12/14, and then teamed with Shinjiro Otani & Tatsuhito Takaiwa on 12/18 to defeat Takuya Sugawara, Ikuto Hidaka, Isami Kodaka and Takumi Tsukamoto. A clean sweep was just what the doctor ordered for this team as they get their first ranking together. While they’ll likely miss out on this year’s Tag Team Top 50, perhaps next year isn’t out of the question?

#4 EYFBO (Mike Draztik & Angel Ortiz)-When it comes to the Tag Team Top 5, this is probably THE most underrated tag team on the indies. They’ve been snubbed multiple times, but this week they finally get in after beating The Broken Hardys, Team 3D, and Private Party in a Four-Way on 12/17 to win the titles. It was a VERY impressive victory and they even got a first-place vote (well-deserved) for their efforts. If they can continue this success into 2017, they’ll be a top contender for one of the top spots in the 2017 Tag Team Top 50. Look out for them.

#5 reDRagon (Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly)-It took all year but the former ROH World Tag Team Champions popped up in the Tag Team Top 5 after finally doing some work together on the indies this year (ROH isn’t considered an “indy” by our standards). Their victory over Death By Elbow (Chris Hero & JT Dunn) at PWG on 12/16 was all that was needed for this amazing tag team to crack the Tag Team Top 5. If they can get some more independent work next year, you may be seeing them more frequently in the rankings in 2017.

People’s Champs. Bad Intentions (Vertigo & Raziel)-The WXW Tag Team Champions get their first People’s Champs award after winning the online voting competition despite some stiff competition from the Ugly Ducklings and two-time People’s Champs Fun Size. Their victory over New Breed on 12/17 retained their titles and then 46 votes from their fans helped them to be awarded their very first People’s Champs award. Now, we shall see what 2017 holds for this tag team. Be sure to give them a like on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/vrbadintentions/

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of December 19th, 2016

#1 Cody Rhodes (@CodyRhodes)-The fan vote once again plays a HUGE role in this week’s rankings as the fans made the difference between Cody Rhodes being #1 and #2. Because he was 2 votes ahead of David Starr in the online voting competition this week, he JUST edged him out for the top spot for the second time this year. The GFW NEX*GEN and WCPW Champion defeated LJT at SWE on 12/15 to retain the GFW Title, then beat Bubblegum at PCW on 12/17, and then beat Will Ospreay at IPW:UK on 12/18 to go 3-0 on the week. We already know Cody will be in the IPR 100 this year, but will he be able to crack the Top 10 after his amazing year? You’ll have to tune in here starting on 12/27 to find out: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elitepodcastnetwork/2016/12/28/indy-power-rankings-2016-ipr-100-reveal-night-one

#2 David Starr (@TheProductDS)-Before the fan votes were tallied, it appeared that the official voters had deemed David Starr #1 in singles for the very first time, but in the end, the fans helped Cody top him. That being said, the wXw Shotgun Champion had an incredible week as he moves up from #3 last week to #2 this week after beating Mike Orlando and Cheeseburger in a Triple Threat at BCW on 12/16 to retain the title, then defeating Sami Callihan on 12/17 to retain again, and then a victory over Chip Day at PWX on 12/18 to retain for a 3rd time to go 3-0 for the week. David Starr has cemented his place in the Top 100 for the year, but where will he end up? Again, tune in here starting on 12/27 to find out: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elitepodcastnetwork/2016/12/28/indy-power-rankings-2016-ipr-100-reveal-night-one

#3 The Big Guy/Ryback (@ryback22)-1/2 of the WrestlePro Tag Team Champions gets his first ranking after a big 3-0 week where he defeated JD Knight at 4FW on 12/16, then beat Johnny Moss at PCW on 12/17, and then beat Saul Samuels at 4FW on 12/18. Pretty impressive stuff for a “big guy” who has been taking the indies by storm since leaving the WWE. While he hasn’t the type of year that Cody has had, he’s certainly starting to blaze a trail heading into 2017. Will it be enough to get him into this year’s IPR 100? There’s just once place you can find out: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elitepodcastnetwork/2016/12/28/indy-power-rankings-2016-ipr-100-reveal-night-one

#4 BC Killer-It’s a first-ever ranking for BC Killer as he won the UEW Sovereign of Slaughter 2016 Tournament over the weekend. He defeated Biggie Biggz in the first round in a chain match, then defeated Damian 666 in a pane and bed of glass match in the semifinals, and then defeated Max X in the final in a no rope barbed wire match to win the tournament on 12/17. BC Killer is attempting to establish a name for himself in the death match scene heading in 2017 as he is looking to start getting mentioned with the likes of names like Matt Tremont & John Wayne Murdoch. Keep an eye on him next year to see what he accomplishes going forward.

#5 Matt Riddle (@riddletuf7)-The phenomenal year for the former #1 continues as he teamed with Jeff Cobb to beat The Young Bucks at PWG on 12/16 in a non-title match and then beat perennial #1 Zack Sabre Jr. at IPW: UK on 12/18 to go 2-0 for the week. Riddle, like so many big names on the indies right now has the inside track on one hell of a ranking next week in the IPR 100 based on the year he’s had. Many have pegged Riddle as a future star, but the fact of the matter is, he’s ALREADY proven to be a star in 2016. Find out where he ranks in this year’s IPR 100 starting on 12/27 here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elitepodcastnetwork/2016/12/28/indy-power-rankings-2016-ipr-100-reveal-night-one

#6 Moose

#7 Mega Pegasus

#8 Jake Parnell-#2 in the online voting competition with 17 votes

#9 Iestyn Rees

#10 People’s Champ. Corey Storm (@corey_storm24)-This 15-year old wrestling prodigy gets his first-ever ranking AND a win in the online voting competition this week after a great week in the Midwest. The WCWO Fight or Die Champion defeated Jonathan Wolf and Calvin Tankman in a Triple Threat Match at WCWO on 12/16 and then followed that up with a win over CJ Shine at IWA Mid-South on 12/17 to go 2-0 for the week. Those wins got him on the ballot and his fans collected 51 votes to give him an easy win in the online voting competition this week. This kid has one hell of a future in the wrestling business if he can keep up this momentum. Follow him on Instagram @coreystorm24
