Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of September 26th, 2016

#1 Jimmyz (Jimmy Kagetora & Jimmy Susumu)-The Dragon Gate promotion in Japan once again stands alone as the top producer of teams in the Tag Team Top 5 with yet another #1 ranking this week. This time it’s the Open the Twin Gate Champions as they defeated Masaaki Mochizuki & Akira Tozawa in a non-title match at Dragon Gate on 9/19 and then beat former #1’s VerserK (Naruki Doi & Shingo Takagi) on 9/22 at Dragon Gate to retain the titles with a 2-0 record for the week. The Jimmyz faction has popped up in the Tag Team Top 5 multiple times this year, this is only their second #1 ranking, which ironically came from the same combination of talent. Look for them to continue their success as we head toward the last quarter of 2016.

#2 British Strong Style (Pete Dunne & Trent Seven)-This is the first ranking for this pairing as they became the NEW Progress Tag Team Champions over the weekend, defeating The London Riots on 9/25 to win the titles. A victory over the London Riots is always a big deal, but winning these prestigious tag team titles is a special accomplishment for the team. Pete Dunne has been ranked MANY times in the singles Top 10, but perhaps his time will be spent more frequently in tags as 2016 moves forward? Time will tell.

#3 Camelot (Zane Dawson & James Drake)-It’s another first-time ranking as the #3 team come to us this week from the Carolinas. The PWF Universal Tag Team Champions picked up one hell of a victory when they beat The Extreme Horsemen (John Skylar & King Corino), The Ugly Ducklings (Rob Killjoy & Lance Lude) and Zane Riley (without Jakob Hammermeier) on 9/23 in a four-way to retain the titles. Great week for PWF as Timmy Lou Retton was #1 in the Indy Power Rankings and this powerful tag team picks up a #3 ranking amidst a lot of great teams battling for a spot in this week’s Top 5.

#4 Martin Kirby & Joey Hayes-We have a THIRD team with a first-time ranking this week as the NEW PCW Tag Team Champions are the second eam representing the UK in the Tag Team Top 5. With a tremendous victory over Team Single (Rampage Brown & T-Bone) on 9/24 to win the titles, they found their way into a ton of respect to go along with their ranking. Like British Strong Style, their victory to win a set of prestigious tag team titles went a very long way in getting them their very first ranking. Look out for them to continue this success in PCW as the year rolls on.

#5 Roscoe Eat Lisa (Mikey McFinnegan & Zakk Sawyers @RoscoeEatLisa)-REL return to the Tag Team Top 5 yet again this year as they are inching their way ever closer to the top spot in this year’s Tag Team Top 50. It was bark, bark gator tits all over again for the duo as the SNPW Tag Team Champions picked up a very impressive win when they defeated Team IOU and Lethal Injection in a Triple Threat Match at SWE on 9/24. On a week where there really weren’t a lot of dominant tag team performances, a win over two very established teams in one match combined with how good their year has been this year helped them into the Tag Team Top 5 for the 7th time this year.

People’s Champs. Days of Rage (Zane & Riot)-The PWE Tag Team Champions are back again with their second win in the online voting competition to become 2-time People’s Champs in the Tag Team Top 5. This week they had The Spirit of Detroit nipping at their heels, but outlasted them with a score of 185 votes to 121. The Champs got onto the poll by beating Owen Knight and Da ATLien to retain the titles over the weekend. Their fans and supporters took care of the rest as they are atop the fan vote once again.

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of September 26th, 2016

#1 Timmy Lou Retton (@TimmyLouRetton)-Professional wrestling’s ONLY male gymnast builds on his phenomenal year with his very first #1 ranking in the singles rankings. A former #1 in the Tag Team Top 5, the GOUGE Heavyweight and PWF Shinjiro Ohtani Openweight Champion defeated Darius Lockhart at PWF in the first round to retain the title of the PWF Legacy Cup, then defeated Victor Andrews in the semis to retain again, and then defeated Anthony Jannazzo in the finals to retain the title again, which also won him the PWF Legacy Cup to go 3-0 for the week. What a week for TLR as he defended his title THREE times AND won the Legacy Cup. Sheer dominance for a young athlete who does nothing but improve every time he hits the ring. He’s a star in the making without a doubt.

#2 Caristico-The former Myzteziz, Original Sin Cara, and Mystico makes an impact on the Indy Power Rankings this week under the name of “Caristico” after a FANTASTIC week at LLE. He competed in Japan in the 6th Fukumen World League as he defeated SUGI in the semifinals at Michinoku Pro on 9/19, then beat Revolucion in the final the same day to win the tournament. He went back to Mexico on 9/23 where he beat Extreme Tiger to run his record to 3-0 on the week with wins in both Asia and North America. It was a flawless week for a talent who you don’t see much in the Indy Power Rankings, but with a ranking like this, that may be changing soon.

#3 Jumping Jimmy Jackson-The NEW GPW British Champion gets his first ranking after he beat Jet Fashion, Joey Hayes, & Martin Kirby in a Four-Way at GPW on 9/23 and then followed that up with a victory over former #1 Bubblegum the same day to win the title with a 2-0 record for the week. It’s a VERY good first time ranking for Jackson as he picked up some impressive wins in the UK. With momentum like this, we may start seeing more of “Triple J” in the Top 10 more frequently.

#4 Nick “Magnus” Aldis (@MagnusOfficial)-It’s not often you see the GFW World Champion in the Top 10 as we don’t count matches at GFW towards our rankings. He took his title on the road last week as he became eligible when he defeated Travis Cole at CWE in Canada on 9/22 to retain the title, then defeated Dice Steel on 9/23 to retain again, then defeated Scotty Mac on 9/24 to retain again, and then defeated Matt Hart on 9/25 to retain again to go 4-0 for the week. His 4-0 ranking could have scored him a #1 ranking, but his only knock against him was his strength of competition . Nothing at all against his opponents, but with some wins against some more well-known opponents, you may see him at #1 in the future.

#5 Mark Haskins (@FightHaskins)-Mark Haskins drops slightly from #2 to #5 this week, but it wasn’t because he had a bad week by any means. In fact, he may have had the single biggest victory of the week, despite sustaining a loss as well. On 9/23 he lost to Trent Seven at FCP, then bounced back as he defeated Xander Cooper on 9/24 at Ironfist to retain his Ironfist title, and then scored the biggest win of the weekend as he defeated Marty Scurll and Tommy End at Progress on 9/25 to win the Progress title. He finished the week at 2-1 but earned a #5 ranking because of the huge title win.

#6 Reed Bentley

#7 Jason Kincaid

#8 Alex Daniels

#9 Anthony Gangone

#10 People’s Champ. Dark Fury-After JUST losing in the online voting competition a few weeks ago, Dark Fury bounces back with his first People’s Champ award this week. The Pro Wrestling Ego PRIDE Champion got back on the poll this week after he defeated Jermiah Plunkett and Stich O’Siris on 9/24 to retain the title. 173 votes later and he took home the win in the online voting competition. Be sure to give him a follow on Instagram at @_darkfury

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of September 19th, 2016

#1 VerserK (Naruki Doi & Shingo Takagi)-It’s a second visit to the top spot for this particular combination of the VerserK faction after an impressive 3-0 week at Dragon Gate in Japan. They defeated Jimmyz (Jimmy Kagetora & Jimmy Kanda) on 9/16; then defeated Over Generation (Dragon Kid & Gamma) on 9/17; then defeated Tribe Vanguard (BxB Hulk and Kzy) on 9/18 to conclude a very successful week. It helps Doi and Takagi take another step closer to a spot in our year-end top 50 but the thing which hurts a lot of Dragon Gate competitors is that they belong to large factions and don’t always tag with the same person at every event.

#2 Hardcore Impact (Pauly Thomaselli & Hardcore Craig)-It’s a first visit to the top 5 for this duo after a brilliant week in which they defended one title and won another. They started off at Brew City Wrestling on 9/16 where they defended that organization’s tag titles against Superiority Complex. Then they made the journey to Pro Wrestling Blitz, where they defeated The RuffBecks (Ruff Crossing and Mason Beck) on 9/17 to win the PWB tag titles and go 2-0 for the week. If they can continue to defend both sets of titles on a regular basis, they could make a late charge for inclusion in our year-end rankings.

#3 Super Smash Brothers (Evil Uno & Stu Grayson)-It’s been quite some time since we heard from this Canadian duo, but they came back with a bang this weekend, beating top British team The London Riots (James Davis & Rob Lynch) and Well Oiled Machines (Pepper Parks & Mike Rollins) at the Progress Wrestling vs Smash Wrestling event in Canada on 9/18. They could have had an even better weekend, but Evil Uno opted to focus predominantly on singles matches. Super Smash Brothers have been competing together for eight years and held titles everywhere from Chikara to Pro Wrestling Guerilla to Alpha 1. If they can get back on a winning streak, the sky’s the limit for this pair.

#4 Kimber Lee & Heidi Lovelace-In between their singles commitments this weekend, two of the top women on the independent scene found time to team up and defeat some bearded bullies. They came to AAW and defeated  our two-time year-end #1 tag team, The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter). The Hooligans have been so dominant in recent years that any time they lose it has to be considered an upset, but defeat to a couple of women wrestlers who don’t even team up regularly is definitely newsworthy.

#5 Davey Vega & Mat Fitchett-This duo has used names Kobrai Kai Dojo and Sex Bob-ombs over the years but now seem happy just to go by Vega and Fitchett. They are the current AAW tag champs and retained the prestigious titles by defeating OI4K (Dave & Jake Crist) on 9/16. While other teams who didn’t make this week’s top 5 may have had more victories, the combination of the prestige of the titles and the quality of their opponents resulted in a much-deserved top 5 ranking.

People’s Champs: Los Chicanos (Jose Garcia & Memo Cuevas)-A few hours before the voting closed it looked like Days of Rage were going to achieve the rare feat of being People’s Champions two weeks in a row. But Los Chicanos, who are the new School Of Morton East Tennessee Tag Team Champions, put in a late charge and eventually won the public poll by one vote. Working at the training school/wrestling promotion run by Ricky Morton of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, Los Chicanos must be picking up tons of tips about tag team wrestling and this will be very beneficial as their careers take off.

 Others receiving votes:

Days of Rage-#2 in the online voting competition with 143 votes

Shannon Reed & Cornelius Wyverstone-#3 in the online voting competition with 51 votes

The Midwest Monsters-#4 in the online voting competition with 33 votes

AperiTeam (Carlo Birra & Claudio Campari)-#5 in the online voting competition with 26 votes
