Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of February 22nd, 2016

#1 Blazin’ Dick (Billy Blaze & Dick Blood)-Yes, that’s their name. Yes, it’s kind of awesome. The CWE Tag Team Champions penetrate the Top 5 for the first time as they defeated The Cannon Clan (Kevin Cannon & Bobby Collins) on 2/19 to retain the titles, then beat Tyler Colton & Chase Owens on 2/20 to retain the titles again, and then beat Chase Owens & Sigmon on 2/21 to retain for a third time. A 3-0 week gets them the #1 spot proving yet again that 2016 has been completely unique in terms of new teams popping up in the rankings week after week, showing that parity is alive and well in the Indy Power Rankings and more specifically, the Tag Team Top 5. CWE generally does a string of shows/tours throughout the year which should give Blazin’ Dick the opportunity to once again plow their way into the Tag Team Top 5.

#2 Mike Rollins & Pepper Parks-The closest competition to Blazin’ Dick for the #1 spot this week (and it really was very close) was Rollins & Parks after they won the F8tful Eight Tournament at Smash Wrestling, which means that Canadian promotions produced both the #1 and #2 teams this week. They defeated The Fraternity (Channing Decker & Trent Gibson) in the Semi-Finals on 2/20 and then beat Chris Hero & Eddie Edwards, Super Smash Brothers (Evil Uno & Stu Grayson) and Le Tabarnak de Team (Mathieu St. Jacques & Thomas Dubois) in a Four-Way Elimination Match in the Finals to win the tournament. So a 2-0 week gets them #2, but there are many official voters who felt that their strength of competition was slightly superior to our #1 this week and Rollins & Parks should have been #1. That’s the type of debates that go on week-after-week among the official voters. For now though, Rollins & Parks are #2 with a shot at #1 sometime down the road if they continue to team and win.

#3 The Second City Collective (Pete Dunne & Ryan Smile)-The Second City Collective have been mentioned twice before in the Tag Team Top 5’s other mentions, but this is their first time cracking the Top 5. The SWE Tag Team Champions defeated The Lucha Cousins (Leva Bates & Nixon Newell) at SWE on 2/20 and then beat The London Riots & The Bro-Mans (Robbie E & DJ Z) the same day to retain the titles. They get their first ranking with a 2-0 record in the UK. The UK has had a good run with tag teams getting ranked and/or mentioned and this week was just another example of that.

#4 Abyss & Kongo Kong-The Monster & Da Monsta! Given time, this tag team could be a devastating force on the indies for the rest of 2016. They got a lot of support in the Tag Team Top 5 this week despite only finishing in fourth with the official voters. They had a good week as they beat Ryan Boz & Russ Jones at AAW on 2/19 and then beat Jackson White & Tank Oleander at NWPW on 2/20 to go 2-0 for the week. If they can start picking up some wins over some established teams and maybe add some gold to the team…they’ll be as scary as anyone on the indies. Hell, they already are, but if they can continue this success they could be a top contender for #1 spot in the 2016 Tag Team Top 50. That’s how highly we think of them.

#5 Havok & Karnage-This is the second UK Tag Team in the Tag Team Top 5 this week as the TW Tag Team Champions defeated Zack Barron & Martin Kirby at Target Wrestling on 2/19 to retain the titles and then beat Polo Promotions (Jackie Polo & Mark Coffey) on 2/20 to retain again. Their 2-0 week may not move the dial for a lot of people who aren’t familiar with them, but two title defenses with one being against a very established team like Polo Promotions is particularly impressive. We’ll see if they can take the show on the road outside of Target Wrestling and keep up the success.

People’s Champs. The 55 (Sha Samuels @Shasamuels & Kid Fite @Kid_Fite)-This is the second People’s Champs award for The 55 in two months, which is saying a lot considering it’s only February. The ICW Tag Team Champions got on the poll again by beating Champagne Superbollocks (Kenny Williams & Noam Dar) in a non-title match on 2/21. This is even more impressive for Sha Samuels as this is the third time this year that a tag team he was a part of won the online voting competition (he also won it as ½ of the Revolutionists). With 136 votes, they easily won this week to keep their momentum going heading into March. Indy Power Rankings for the Week of February 22nd, 2016

#1 People’s Champ. Will Ospreay (@WillOspreay)-By our research, this has now only happened twice. The first was Ricochet back in 2014 when he was both #1 AND The People’s Champ that week. This time it’s Will Ospreay who had another fantastic weekend in the UK. Not only did he get the People’s Champ award AND the #1 ranking in the same week…he SWEPT the official voters’ ballots. His week was stellar as he defeated Marty Scurll & Pete Dunne in a 3 Way Match at RPW on 2/17, then teamed with Andrew Everett at SWE on 2/20 to beat Mark Haskins & Robbie E. He followed those 2 wins up with a third victory over Andrew Everett at SWE in the evening to go 3-0 for the week. Give a like to his Facebook page over at https://www.facebook.com/WillOspreay and you can follow him on Instagram at https://instagram.com/willospreay

#2 Doug Williams (@DougWilliamsUK)-The UK once again dominates the Indy Power Rankings Top 10 as the #1 and #2 spots are occupied by the past and future of UK wrestling. To be fair, they’re both the PRESENT also. Anyway, Doug Williams returns to the Top 10 after a week where ½ of the POW Tag Team Champions defeated Ivan Kiev at GWF/NSW in Germany on 2/19, then beat El Ligero at NGW UK on 2/20, and then won a #1 Contenders Rumble the same night to go 3-0 for the week. It was a very impressive week as Doug Williams just continues to turn back the clocks year after year with great performances everywhere he goes. The one thing that has eluded him since we began our rankings in 2013 is a #1 ranking. Can Doug Williams add that to his list of accomplishments in 2016?

#3 Tommy End (@tommyend)-The UK takes the top two spots and the continent of Europe as a whole owns the Top 3. The ICWA Heavyweight and ½ of PWH Tag Team Champions defeated Shady Nattrass at Target Wrestling on 2/19 and then scored a HUGE victory vs. Timothy Thatcher at SWE on 2/20 to go 2-0 for the week. One of Europe’s absolute best wrestlers continues to impress as he’s back on the winning track. While you can certainly debate his strength of competition in his first victory, you’d have to universally agree that a win over the EVOLVE Champion (even outside of EVOLVE) is a big deal.

#4 Anthony Henry (@Antnyhenry)-There was some debate among the official voters as to whether Anthony Henry should have been higher. The voters who were behind him unanimously agreed that his wins were enough to get him to at least #2 or #3 this week. He ends up at #4, which is obviously nothing to be ashamed of. On 2/19 he beat Timmy Lou Retton at Legacy and then scored one of the biggest wins of his career vs. Sami Callihan on 2/20 at PWX. A 2-0 weekend gets him his highest ranking as he is now on a hot streak all of a sudden. He’s worked his way up to where he’s at now and you have to assume that gold can’t be too far away.

#5 Zakk Sawyers (@BeetusZakk)-This talent from Travis County, TX is finally starting to get the recognition he deserves. A lot of his success up to this point came as ½ of the Roscoe Eat Lisa tag team with Mikey McFinnegan (which he’s still a part of) but now he’s really starting to get noticed in tags AND singles. After a great match with Tommaso Ciampa in 2015, he’s put the world on notice. Now he gets his highest singles ranking as he won the St. Louis Invitational Medallion when he beat Mark Sterling at PWCS in the Quarterfinals on 2/20, then beat Paco Gonzalez in the Semi-Finals, and then beat KC Karrington in the Finals. A 3-0 week in singles gets him the #5 ranking as he is the highest ranking Midwest talent this week. Check out his hilarious podcast on the Indy Power Rankings Reveal from 2015 here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elitepodcastnetwork/2015/11/25/indy-power-rankings-tag-team-top-5-reveal-ft-roscoe-eat-lisa

#6 Saime Sahin-On the 1/26/16 edition of the Indy Power Rankings, we wondered whether we’d see Saime Sahin back in the rankings in 2016. It didn’t take long for that to happen. Less than a month, in fact. The 4FW Champion defeated Tiger Ali in a non-title match on 2/19, then beat Dave Mastiff on 2/20 to retain the title, and then beat PWP Heavyweight Champion Steve Griffiths by DQ (but didn’t win the title) to go 3-0 on the week. The only thing that held Sahin back was likely the DQ victory, BUT one thing is for sure, we won’t be debating whether we’ll see Saime Sahin’s name pop up again. Respect has been earned without a doubt.

#7 Australian Wolf (aka Mason Childs)-Australia continues to surprise people with “new” names popping up in our rankings all the time. While Australian Wolf certainly isn’t new to wrestling, he is new to our Top 10 rankings. Despite getting no fan votes in the online voting competition, his week did enough to sway the voters as he defeated BJ Blade in the First Round of the PPW P-1 Tournament in Australia on 2/20, then beat Thirteen in the Semi-Finals, and then beat Alex Shepard in the Finals to win the tournament. A 3-0 week gets Australian Wolf his first ranking and with any more tournament victories like this one, it will be the first of many.

#8 Joey Eclipse –Speaking of Australia, they get another talent from Down Under into the Top 10 this week. The NCWF Southern Star Champion defeated Marcus James on 2/19 to retain the title, then beat Skip Samson on 2/20 to retain again, and then beat Marcus James & Paul Thornton in a Triple Threat the same day to retain yet again to go 3-0 for the week. 3 wins. 3 title defenses. Joey Eclipse just keeps turning away the challengers and now he has his first official ranking. We’re anxious to see who else from Australia pops up next in the Indy Power Rankings.

#9 Vaughn Vertigo (@NotEnoughVaughn)-This Ontario, Canadian talent gets his first ranking this week as 2016 continues to be a year of firsts for the Indy Power Rankings. On 2/15 he started the week out the right way by beating Carter Mason at Barrie Wrestling in the First Round of the King of Barrie Tournament. He followed that up by beating Lionel Knight and Shane Sabre in the Finals to win the Tournament. While there were others in the Top 10 with tournament victories with MORE wins, his two wins were still particularly solid. All 3 of the talents that he overcame to win that tournament are some of the better talents in Canada right now. Congrats to Vaughn Vertigo on his first of what will hopefully be many more rankings!

#10 Joe Coffey (@Joe_Coffey)-This Glasgow, Scotland native JUST slips into the Top 10 this week as he went 2-0-1. He fought Deviation to a Double Countout at Discovery on 2/18, and then picked up victories over Craig Kollins at Target on 2/20 and then Mikey Whiplash at ICW on 2/21. Coffey is yet another example of the UK continuing to excel in the Indy Power Rankings in 2016. While Japan had a few promotions drop from our eligibility which has affected the amount of rankings that country has garnered this year, the UK has stepped up to the plate to knock it out of the park time and time again.
