Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of April 10th, 2017

#1 Indy Card Mafia (Thomas Brewington & Eric Emanon)-What an absolutely AMAZING week for the IYFW, Northwest Ohio Wrestling, Sanctuary, and NEW Nova Promotions Tag Team Champions. First, they defeated Beniet and The Walking Weapon at Sanctuary on 4/7 to retain the titles, then defeated Spirit of Detroit at LPW on 4/8, and then defeated The Fellowship on 4/9 at NOVA Promotions to win the titles to go 3-0 for the week. Despite some very good rankings in the past including a win in the online voting competition, this is their very first #1 ranking in the Tag Team Top 5. This is a team who will travel anywhere, any time, and now they’re finally starting to get the credit they deserve. Check out this very controversial interview with the Indy Card Mafia from 2015 here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elitepodcastnetwork/2015/08/19/indy-power-rankings-tag-team-top-5-reveal-ft-indycardmafia

#2 3rd Generation Chimidoro Brothers (Abdullah Kobayashi, Takayuki Ueki, & Masaya Takahashi)-The other contender for the #1 spot this week came from Big Japan as the BJW Yokohama Shopping Street 6-Man Tag Team Champions; defeated Ryuji Ito, Isami Kodaka and Toshiyuki Sakuda at Big Japan on 4/3, then defeated Ryuji Ito, Masashi Takeda and Kankuro Hoshino on 4/5, then defeated Ryuji Ito, Jaki Numazawa & Toshiyuki Sakuda on 4/7, then defeated B Faultless Junky’s (“Kokutenshi” Jaki Numazawa, Masashi Takeda and Takumi Tsukamoto) on 4/9 to retain the titles to go 4-0 for the week. Pretty impressive stuff from a three-man team and with this type of success going forward, there’s no doubt a #1 ranking is in their future in 2017.

#3 Scarlet and Graves (Dezmond Xavier & Zachary Wentz)

#4 Speed of Sounds (Tsutomu Osugi & Hercules Senga)

#5 Besties in the World/Blood Brothers (Davey Vega & Mat Fitchett)

People’s Champs. Final Hour (Scott Ronin & Justin Cole @FinalHour901)-It’s the second People’s Champ award for Final Hour as they once again won the online voting competition this week. They got on the poll with a solid week as they defeated Addison Caine and Blake Christian at SGWA on 4/8 and then defeated The Pink and Black Attack on 4/9 to go 2-0 for the week. With 73 votes, they picked up their second People’s Champs award in a pretty competitive vote. Indy Power Rankings for the Week of April 10th, 2017

#1 Michael Elgin (@MichaelElgin25)-The 2013 IPR 100 #1 is BACK at the top of the Indy Power Rankings Top 10 as he mowed through the competition this past week. He started off the week when he defeated Jake Crist at IWA Mid-South on 4/6, then defeated Matt Riddle at AAW on 4/8, and then defeated Jeff Cobb, Tarik and Brent Banks in a four-way at Smash in Canada on 4/9 to go 3-0 for the week. He was a unanimous #1 among the official voters as he knocked off some of the top names on the indies in North America in just one week. 5 solid names, all defeated by Elgin. Welcome back to the #1 spot to “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin.

#2 Kip Sabian (@TheKipSabian)-The NEW HOPE Wrestling King of Flight Champion gets his first ranking as he defeated Matt Cross in the first round on 4/8, then defeated Cara Noir in the semifinals the same day, and then defeated Jigsaw, Ashley Dunn & Jake McCluskey in a four-way final to win the HOPE Kings Of Flight Championship Tournament to go 3-0 for the week. Sabian gets a VERY high ranking this week after defeating some top names in the UK (and from around the world) on the way to another championship. If he can keep up this momentum, you’ll surely be seeing his name in the Top 10 again this year.

#3 Toby Farley (@RealTobyFarley)-The NWA Smoky Mountain Cup once again plays a big part in deciding a top ranking in the Top 10 this week as in previous years of the tournament. He defeated Chip Day in the first round on 4/8 and then beat Menace, Axton Ray, Jordan Kage, Tracer X & Timmy Lou Retton in a six-way elimination match in the final to win the Smoky Mountain Cup and go 2-0 for the week. This is Farley’s first ranking as he picks up a career win in the tournament in Tennessee. Like Sabian, he’s likely going to have multiple chances to improve on his ranking as the year rolls on.

#4 Masaya Takahashi-When someone goes 6-1 in a week like Takahashi did, it’s almost impossible to deny them a spot in the Top 10. Takahashi as 1/3 of the BJW Yokohama Shopping Street 6-Man Tag Team Champions teamed with Abdullah Kobayashi & Takayuki Ueki at BJW on 4/3 to defeat Ryuji Ito, Isami Kodaka and Toshiyuki Sakuda, then teamed with Kobayashi & Ueki again on 4/5 to defeat Ryuji Ito, Masashi Takeda and Kankuro Hoshino, then teamed with Takayuki Ueki & Kankuro Hoshino on 4/6 to lose to Ryuji Ito, Masashi Takeda & Yuko Miyamoto, then teamed with Kobayashi & Ueki on 4/7 to defeat Ryuji Ito, “Kokutenshi” Jaki Numazawa & Toshiyuki Sakuda, then defeated Kenji Fukimoto on 4/8 in the semifinals, and then defeated Isami Kodaka in the final to win the Ikkitousen Death Match Survivor tournament; then teamed with Kobayashi & Ueki on 4/9 to defeat B Faultless Junky’s (“Kokutenshi” Jaki Numazawa, Masashi Takeda & Takumi Tsukamoto) to retain the titles. Insane week for this Death Match talent.

#5 Arik Royal (BigArikRoyal)-Another former mainstay of the Indy Power Rankings returns this week after a huge week at CWF Mid-Atlantic. He defeated Dirty Daddy there on 4/8 and then won a Battle Royal the same day to go 2-0 for the week. We’ve seen in the past that Arik Royal can be very dominant when given the opportunity as he is a former #1 in the Indy Power Rankings. Though most of his bookings tend to stay around North Carolina, he continues to make a lot of progress as one of the top talents in that area.

#6 Dru Skillz

#7 Dave Crist

#8 Corey Storm

#9 Amazing Maria-#3 in the online voting competition with 54 votes

#10 Todd Letterman aka Kevin Lee Davidson

People’s Champ. Devin Driscoll (@Devin_Driscoll)-This is the second-ever People’s Champ award for Driscoll as he basically dominated the online voting competition from start to finish. With 156 votes, he crushed all other challengers to win the award this week. In the ring he had an amazing week as well as he beat JT Dunn at H3Wrestling and then Ethan Page by DQ the same day to go 2-0 for the week. On any other week he likely would have cracked the official Top 10. You can follow him on Instagram @DevinDriscoll

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of April 3rd, 2017

#1 Going Rogue (Aaron Epic & Chip Day)-This team absolutely EARNED their #1 ranking as they defeated two former #1’s over the weekend. They defeated Roscoe Eat Lisa (Mikey McFinnegan & Zakk Sawyers) at Brain Buster Pro Wrestling on 3/31 and then defeated Ugly Ducklings (Rob Killjoy & Lance Lude) on 4/1 at Ignite to go 2-0 for the week. By defeating two of the truly great tag teams on the indies right now, they have been voted into a surprise #1 ranking on one of the busiest and most competitive weekends of wrestling in the entire calendar year. Both talents have earned mentions before, but this is their first ranking together and it’s a #1!

#2 Bacon and Eggs (Ace Montana & Porkchop Johnson)-The NEW Next Evolution Wrestling Tag Team Champions get a first ranking as they defeated Aric Andrews & Elias in the first round, then defeated Hounds of Hades in the semifinal, and then defeated Preston Quinn & Lee Valiant in the final the same day to win a 8-team tournament on 4/1 to win the titles to go 3-0 for the week. On a busy weekend, this was a phenomenal week for the amusingly named tag team. If they can continue to retain those titles, they’ve got a shot at future rankings as 2017 continues.

#3 Los Gueros Del Cielo (Jack Evans & Angelico)

#4 Catch Point (Fred Yehi & Tracy Williams)

#5 Daichi Hashimoto & Hideyoshi Kamitani

People’s Champs. Beer 30 (Syd Show & Southern Show Off)-The ASWF, MACW, SGWA, and NEW DWX Tag Team Champions got on the poll when they beat Mike Shaw and Richard Ring at DWX on 3/31 to win the titles. 46 votes later and they won the online voting competition along with the People’s Champs award for this week. Indy Power Rankings for the Week of April 3rd, 2017

#1 Zack Sabre Jr. (@zacksabrejr)-Last year’s #1 in the IPR 100 had some STRONG competition this week for the top spot in the Indy Power Rankings with Wrestlemania weekend in full force. ZSJ gets his first #1 of 2017 as the Pro Wrestling Guerilla, Evolve and RevPro British Heavyweight Champion defeated ACH at Evolve on 3/30 to retain the title, then defeated Jimmy Havoc at Progress on 3/31, then defeated Michael Elgin at Evolve the same day (non-title) then defeated Penta El Zero M at RevPro the same day, then defeated Mike Quackenbush at Chikara on 4/1, and then defeated Mark Haskins at the WWN Super Show the same day to retain the Evolve title to go 6-0 for the week. He was the first person to trump the Best of the Best Tournament as it has historically always produced a #1 ranking.

#2 Dave Crist (@TheDaveCrist)-What an INSANE week for the IWA Mid-South, ½ of the JCW Tag Champs, and ½ of the AAW Tag Team Champs as he defeated Cole Radrick, Aaron Williams and Craig West in a four-way at Rockstar Pro on 3/29, then defeated Kongo Kong and Larry D in a three-way at IWA Mid-South on 3/30 to retain the title, then teamed with Jake Crist at Pro Wrestling Revolver on 4/1 to lose to Jack Evans and Angelico, then defeated Jake Crist, Rey Fenix and Sami Callihan in a first round four-way at Combat Zone Wrestling the same day, then defeated Michael Elgin in the semifinals, then defeated Shane Strickland in the final the same day to win the Best Of The Best 16, then teamed with AR Fox, Sami Callihan & Jake Crist at Full Impact Pro on 4/2 to defeat ACH, Keith Lee, Michael Elgin & Sammy Guevara, and then teamed with David Starr, Curt Stallion and Zachary Wentz at WrestleCircus vs Wrestling Revolver to lose to Boone, Aaron Solo, Ricky Starks & Sammy Guevara and go 6-2 for the week. While he did suffer two losses, if it wasn’t for ZSJ’s ridiculous 6-0 week he would have collected his first #1. As it stands, he gets a #2 ranking and the unfortunate dubious distinction of being the first to win BOTB but not the #1 the same week.

#3 LuFisto (@LuFisto)-LuFisto’s fantastic 2017 continues as she picks up a #3 ranking on the busiest weekend of the year. The SHINE Champion racked up three wins over the weekend as she defeated Leva Bates at Shimmer on 4/1, then defeated Toni Storm at the WWN Super Show to retain the SHINE title, and then defeated Deonna Purrazzo the same day at Beyond to go 3-0 for the week. LuFisto has always been one of the top female talents on the planet, but this seems to be the year where she’s really been picking up consistent rankings in the IPR. With the SHINE title still around her waist, there’s no doubt that she has a strong possibility of continuing this type of success this year.

#4 Matt Riddle (@riddletuf7)-BRO just continues to kill it this year as he picks up yet another ranking this week. The Progress Atlas Champion and NEW WWN Champion lost to Drew Galloway at Evolve on 3/30, then defeated Dan Severn at Game Changer Wrestling the same day, then defeated Trent Seven at Progress on 3/31 to retain the title, then lost to Fred Yehi at Evolve the same day, then defeated Timothy Thatcher, Fred Yehi, Jon Davis and Parrow in an elimination match at the WWN Supershow to become inaugural champion, and then defeated Donovan Dijak at Beyond on 4/1 to go 4-2 for the week. While his record for the week wasn’t as good as those above him, his title win was so important that it was impossible to keep him out of the Top 5 this week.

#5 Pete Dunne (@PeteDunneYxB)-This part-time WWE competitor gets another ranking this week after a great weekend in Orlando, FL. The Progress World Champion defeated Mark Haskins at Progress on 3/31 to retain the title and then defeated ACH at the WWN Super Show to retain the Progress title to go 2-0 for the week (his win at WrestleMania Axxess does not count towards our rankings). Pete Dunne’s status as one of the truly great wrestlers definitely helped him into such a high ranking, but his wins spoke for themselves. If he continues to work independent shows this year, you’ll likely continue to see his name pop up in our rankings.

#6 Matt Tremont

#7 Fred Yehi

#8 Shayna Baszler

#9 Anderson Tyson Moore

#10 People’s Champ. Mitch Johnson (@JohnsonEra)-Mitch Johnson gets his first People’s Champ award in quite some time after winning this week’s online voting competition with a very impressive 111 votes. He became the NEW NWA Central States Heavyweight Champion after beating Deven Spade on 3/31 to win the title, which is what got him on the poll. He came on strong late in the date to dominate the competition to pick up his first People’s Champ award this year. You can follow him on Instagram @JohnsonEra and you can like the official Facebook page of Mitch Johnson here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mitch-Johnson/109497852439460
