Indy Power Rankings for the Week of February 6th, 2017

#1 People’s Champ. Shane Mercer (@theirondemon)-“The Iron Demon” Shane Mercer becomes one of the few talents to ever win the online voting competition AND the official #1 in the same week, but when Shane Mercer says “No Limits”, he means it. Mercer was on FIRE this past week as he defeated international superstar, Joey Ryan at IWA Mid-South on 2/2, then beat Kongo Kong on 2/4 to win the Strong Style Wrestling Heavyweight title. That same night when he finally overcame Kong, he defeated Davey Richards to go 3-0 for the week. Shane Mercer has been absolutely dominant in 2017 so far as this appears to be his best year yet if he can continue this type of success. It’s also worth noting that his win in the online voting competition was an all-out WAR as he edged out Rob Kincaid by 5 votes with 289 votes for this week’s People’s Champ award. #2 Space Monkey (@PWSpaceMonkey)-It’s the first-ever ranking in the Indy Power Rankings for Space Monkey as he made his mark after winning CHIKARA’s Young Lions Cup for 2017. He defeated Ashley Vox, Delmi Exo and Merlok in a four-way first round match at Chikara on 2/4, then defeated Cornelius Crummels in the semis, and then defeated The Whisper in the final to win the tournament and the vacant title to go 3-0 for the week. Space Monkey has been one of the truly unheralded talents of the indies and he finally breaks through after a phenomenal week where arguably only one person surpassed it. Look out for him to continue this success as the year rolls on.

#3 Gary Jay (@StiffRoboGinger)-The breakout 2017 continues for Gary Jay as he won another important tournament over the weekend. The Strong Style Wrestling New Blood Tournament played host to Gary Jay’s second tournament win this year as he defeated Stephen Wolf in the first round, then beat Cole Radrick in the second round, and then beat Chip Day in the finals to win the tournament. His only blemish for the week was his loss to David Starr in a wXw Shotgun Title Match at IWA Mid-South on 2/2. A 3-1 record for the week gets the former #1 a #3 ranking which is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. He was also #4 in the online voting competition with 20 votes.

#4 Ryan Smile (@ADSRyanSmile)-This British talent had a HELL of a week in the UK as he defeated Colt Cabana at Kamikaze Pro on 2/3, then beat Pete Dunne on 2/4 at Over the Top Wrestling to win the No Limits Title there, and then beat Travis Banks at RevPro on 2/5 to go 3-0 for the week. Smile beat three top talents and absolutely would have had an even higher ranking had these wins not come on such a busy week with so much stiff competition in the Top 5. Look for Smile to continue to make progress as 2017 continues.

#5 John Wayne Murdoch-“The Duke of Hardcore” and IWA Mid-South Champion is #5 for a second straight week as the Mr. Consistency of the indies continues his momentum in 2017. On 2/2 he picked up a win against a who’s who in independent wrestling as he beat Sami Callihan, Jake Crist, and Dave Crist in a Four Way to retain the title. He then followed that up on 2/4 as he beat a powerhouse in Russ Jones to once again retain the title. If the 2017 IPR 100 were to hit right now, he would be sitting at #1. Consistency pays off and if he can STAY consistent, no one is going to be able to overtake the 2016 King of the Death Matches in this year’s Top 100.

#6 Dorian Graves

#7 YAMATO

#8 Marty Scurll

#9 David Starr

#10 Jesse James
