Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of January 30th, 2017

#1 The Broken Hardys (Broken Matt & Brother Nero)-This is NOT the tag team you would expect to see at the top of the Indy Power Rankings Tag Team Top 5, but here they are! While we don’t recognize TNA as an independent wrestling promotion, the work of the TNA Tag Team Champions outside of TNA on the indies are recognized. That being said, The Broken Hardys had perhaps the best week any tag team has ever had on the independents. The TNA, Wrestling Superstar, and Crash Tag Team Champions added MORE gold to their waists over the weekend as they defeated Ron Mathis & Rocky Rage at All Star Wrestling on 1/27 to win the titles, then defeated The Ecktourage (Dirty Money & Eric Chapel) at MCW on 1/28 to win the titles, and then defeated John Skyler & CW Anderson and Arik Royal & Roy Wilkins in a triple threat at CWF Mid-Atlantic on 1/29 to win the Omega titles to go 3-0 for the week. There was ZERO debate as to who was #1 this week. 3 wins. 3 new titles. It’s all about the Hardys once again in 2017.

#2 American Wolves (Eddie Edwards & Davey Richards)-Speaking of TNA, we get the former TNA Tag Team Champions at #2 this week as they had a nice tour of the indies at Beyond Wrestling over the weekend. On 1/28 they defeated Da Hit Squad in an indy dream match and then followed that up with a win over EYFBO on 1/29. While no titles were won or defended, you can’t overlook the strength of competition and overall prestige of the Wolves, which obviously led to such a high ranking for Edwards & Richards. This is a team that we may not see after 2017, so it will be interesting to see what kind of run they can make this year to perhaps lead to a spot in the year-end Tag Team Top 50 for 2017.

#3 Tribe Vanguard (YAMATO & Kzy)-A 4-0 week is never ignored or overlooked despite an INSANE week of a lot of great tag teams putting together a very good week. Tribe Vanguard gets a #3 ranking as they teamed with Big R Shimizu at Dragon Gate on 1/23 to defeat CIMA, Dragon Kid and Eita, then defeated Jimmy Kness JKS & Shun Skywalker on 1/27, then defeated Jimmy K-ness JKS and Hyou Watanabe on 1/28, and then teamed with BxB Hulk on 1/29 to defeat Jimmy K-ness JKS, Ben-K and Shun Skywalker to go undefeated for the week. This is first-time ranking for this duo and with the frequency of shows at Dragon Gate, it likely won’t be their last.

#4 The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter @BeardedBullys)-These Outlaws find their way into the rankings almost every single week. The 2014 and 2015 Tag Team Top 50 #1’s have been having another banner year as the FIP, Rockstar Pro, Zero1 USA, and NEW Glory Pro Tag Team Champions had another amazing week. They fought to a no contest vs Fight or Flight (Kyle Maverick & Nate Wings) at Rockstar Pro on 1/25, then defeated Freak n Sadistic (“The Freak” Draven Lee & “Sadistic” Sean Stephens) to win the Glory Pro titles on 1/27, and then defeated Dark Passengers (Grin & Max Sinister) and The Diamond Dogs/KC Wolves (Luke Langley & Graham Bell) at Zero1 USA to retain the titles to go 2-0-1 for the week. Are the Hooligans a lock for a third #1 in this year’s Tag Team Top 50? Time will tell.

#5 Over Sun (Yuma Oka & Yuki Miyazaki)-It’s a first-ever ranking for this tag team as they had a phenomenal week in Japan where they won the WAVE Tag Team Titles. On 1/28 they defeated Misaki Ohata and Ryo Mizunami to win those titles and then defeated Natsu Sumire and Mika Iida on 1/29 to go 2-0 for the week. It was honestly a toss-up as to who was going to be #5 this week after a great week for multiple teams, but in the end the title win by Over Sun helped them to edge out several other very deserving teams.

People’s Champs. Foley Bros (Ryan & Mo Foley)-The ICW Milwaukee Tag Team Champions found their way onto the polling by beating Kato Greato & Jay Swash on 1/29 to retain the titles. It was then a battle between them and Sensationally Dangerous for the People’s Champs awards as they just beat them out with 85 votes to win the online voting competition for a third time and the first this year. This is a team that is making great strides in the Wisconsin area and if they can turn that into more wins in more promotions, you’ll likely see them in the official Tag Team Top 5 in addition to great showings in the fan vote.
