Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of January 9th, 2017

#1 Modern Day Savages-The Wild Samoan Tournament has taken a big step up in the minds of the official voters as last year the winners of the tournament ended up #4 in the Tag Team Top 5. In 2014 they were #3. This year…they’re #1. Congrats to the Modern Day Savages on their first ranking…which turned out to be a #1 as they defeated Frankie Burbank and Charles Bison in the first round at World Xtreme Wrestling on 1/7, then defeated The Brothers Lockhart in the semifinals, and then defeated Jorel Ganzy & Jaxen Blade in the final to win the 2017 Wild Samoan Tag Team Tournament to go 3-0 for the week. Very impressive and the last two weeks of rankings are showing that 2017 may be very similar to 2016 in that we are getting a lot of “new” teams in the top spot each and every week.

#2 The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter @BeardedBullys)-It’s week 3 of the Tag Team Top 5 for 2017 (it began right at the end of 2016) and Devin & Mason Cutter have already been ranked TWICE this year putting them in prime position for another amazing run. The 2014 and 2015 Tag Team Top 50 #1’s and current Rockstar Pro, FIP, and Zero1 USA Tag Team Champions defeated Fight or Flight (Kyle Maverick & Nate Wings) in a non-title match at Rockstar Pro on 1/4, then defeated Night Ryderz (Dustin Rayz & Alex Colon) on 1/6, then lost to Davey Vega & Mat Fitchett at AAW on 1/7, and then defeated Drennan & Parrow at Full Impact Pro on 1/8 to retain those titles to go 3-1 for the week. If it wasn’t for their lone loss last week, they likely would have been a lock for the #1 spot, but they’ll have to settle for #2 this week.

#3 Queen’s Quest (Io Shirai, HZK, & Momo Watanabe)-This three-woman team gets into the Tag Team Top 5 for the very first time after becoming the NEW Artist of Stardom Tag Team Champions last week. The trio defeated Oedo Tai (Kyoko Kimura, Kagetsu & Viper (subbing for Hana Kimura) at Stardom on 1/7 to win the titles and then defeated Yoko Bito, Jungle Kyouna and Mayu Iwatani on 1/8 (non-title) to go 2-0 for the week. Stardom is always very busy (especially in tag team competition) so it’s very likely you’ll be seeing this team again in the rankings in the upcoming weeks and months.

#4 Strong BJ (Daisuke Sekimoto & Yuji Okabayashi)-One of the most dominant tag teams of 2015 are back with a vengeance this week as they defeated Twin Towers (Kohei Sato & Shuji Ishikawa) on1/2 to win the Big Japan Tag Team Titles and then teamed with Ryuichi Kawakami on 1/4 to defeat Kazumi Kikuta, Takuya Nomura & Yoshihisa Uto to go 2-0 for the week. With this violent team holding a set of very important tag team titles, be on the lookout for them to make waves in the Tag Team Top 5 once again in 2017.

#5 The Heatseekers (Sigmon & Russell Elliott)-The NWA United States Tag Team Champions continued their hot streak as they beat a team that was ranked #8 in the 2016 Tag Team Top 50 in the Ugly Ducklings (Lance Lude & Rob Killjoy). This tag team is one of the most consistent teams over the last few years, so as always, keep an eye out for them as they continue to show just how good they really are vs. world class competition where ever they go.

People’s Champs. The Police Department (Rod Street & Deputy Dave)-This tag team got on the poll after a HUGE win vs. Roscoe Eat Lisa (the #3 team in the 2016 Tag Team Top 50) at Strong Style Wrestling on 1/7. With 77 votes, The Police Department dominated the online voting competition as they beat out SMS by 22 votes. This is a tag team that has been mentioned a lot in our rankings, but this is the first time they have really broken through into a major spot in the rankings as they are this week’s Peoples Champs (despite their dastardly ways).
