Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of December 26th, 2016

#1 Shuten Doji (KUDO, Mashiro Takanashi, & Yukio Sakaguchi)-New Year (for the rankings at least) and a new team at #1…and it’s a three-man team! This is the first-ever ranking for Shuten Doji as they enter 2017 as the first team to be #1 for the year ahead. The KO-D Six-Man Tag Team Champions defeated DAMNATION (Daisuke Sasaki, Tetsuya Endo and Mad Pauly) on 12/23 (non-title) and then defeated DAMNATION (Daisuke Sasaki, Shuji Ishikawa & Tetsuya Endo) on 12/25 to retain the titles to go 2-0 for the week. With the holiday week there were very few independent promotions running, but in Japan, that wasn’t the case as this team was one of the very few teams to gain more than one win over the span of the week. Time will tell if they can continue this momentum in the weeks and months ahead.

#2 The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter @BeardedBullys)-Well, well, well, those bearded bullies are back at it again in the 2017 rankings as the 2-time #1 team in the Tag Team Top 50 returns to the Tag Team Top 5 once again. We’re talking about a team who was #1 in 2014’s Tag Team Top 50, #2 in 2015, and…you can find out where they ranked this year here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/elitepodcastnetwork/2016/12/28/indy-power-rankings-2016-tag-team-top-50-reveal

Cheap plug aside, the Rockstar Pro, FIP, and Zero1 USA Tag Team Champions took their Rockstar Pro titles to Dayton, OH where they beat the VERY talented team of Dezmond Xavier & Trey Miguel to retain the titles on 12/21. With multiple shows coming up, look out for these tag team road warriors to continue their success in 2017.

#3 Joey Ryan & Laura James-This happy couple took their show to Japan last week as they beat T2Hide (Kazuki Hirata & Sanshiro Takagi) at DDT on 12/23 and then beat Makoto Oishi & Saki Akai on Christmas Day to go 2-0 for the week. Joey is, of course, known for his teaming with Candice LeRae in years past as they were ranked in the 2015 Tag Team Top 50 together. With him gaining a #3 ranking with Laura James, will we see more of this team (in wrestling) as 2017 moves along? One thing’s for sure, their teaming in Japan is off to a great start as the New Year comes.

#4 People’s Champs. Twisted Sisterz (Thunder Rosa & Holidead)-2017’s rankings start off much like 2016 in that Twisted Sisterz are once again People’s Champs after winning the online voting competition again. The NWA Western States Tag Team Champions wrapped up their tour of Japan as they beat Queen’s Quest (HZK & Momo Watanabe) at Stardom in Japan on 12/22 to retain the titles. They collected 57 votes from their fans in order to become People’s Champs once again this week. You can catch them on the Tag Team Top 50 Reveal for 2016 here:

#5 Speed of Sounds (Hercules Senga & Tsutomo Oosugi)-After a great 2016, 2017 looks like it could be just as good or better for Speed of Sounds as the former #1’s teamed with Takuya Nomura at Big Japan on 12/24 to defeat Brahman Kei, Brahman Shu & Tatsuhiko Yoshino and then beat Daichi Kazato & Koji Iwamoto at Basara on 12/25 to go 2-0 for the week. Big Japan has been well-known for getting tag teams into the Tag Team Top 5 and this week was obviously no different. Keep an eye on Big Japan as they continue to produce teams who win and win FREQUENTLY.
