Indy Power Rankings for the Week of December 26th, 2016

#1 People’s Champ. Corey Storm (@corey_storm24)-It’s the first official rankings of the 2017 year (last week was the last of 2016) and Corey Storm did what few others have done as he won both the official voting AND the fan voting to become both the People’s Champ AND the overall #1! Storm also has the unique distinction of being the very last People’s Champ of 2016 and the first of 2017. While independent wrestling was very slow on this week, take nothing away from the WCWO Fight or Die Champion who defeated Jordan Oliver Jr. at IWA Mid-South on 12/22 and then beat Red Rocket at WCWO on 12/23 to retain the title with a 2-0 record for the week. While it’s true that Christmas week may have put a hold to a lot of independent wrestling, Corey Storm still managed to pick up two wins along with a title defense. That combined with his People’s Champ award last week led to his first-ever #1 ranking and he’s ONLY 15! Follow him on Instagram @coreystorm24

#2 Raquel (@RaquelTNA)-It’s the first of the year for our rankings and the first official ranking for ½ of the SHINE Tag Team Champions and NEW Orlando Pro Wrestling Women’s Champion. On 12/21 she teamed with Mila Naniki to defeat Axx Clover & Chico Adams. She then beat Amber Nova, Kaci Lennox, Mila Naniki, and Raegan Fire in a Five Way to win the vacant title the same night. Raquel was mentioned at the end of the year in our tag team rankings along with Santana Garrett for her tag title victory at SHINE but this is her breakthrough singles ranking as she proved to dominate the competition as she swept the number 2 spot on all of the official voters’ ballots. If this is any indication of her year to come, 2017 should be a great one.

#3 Io Shirai (@shirai_io)-This former #1 makes an immediate impact in this year’s rankings as she was the only person who stood between Corey Storm and a clean sweep of the official voters and the fan vote. Io Shirai is the only wrestler to have gotten a #1 vote (aside from Corey Storm of course) from an official voter this week. She earned it after she defeated the very capable Mayu Iwatani to retain the World of Stardom Title on 12/22. Io Shirai is an absolute beast in Japan. Be sure to catch the IPR 100 Reveal for 2016 to find out where she ranked in the year’s overall Top 100. Here’s the link to both nights-Night 1:

and Night 2″

and Night 2:

#4 Rina Yamashita-We get another first-time ranking coming out of Japan this week as this talent went 3-0 with a fantastic week. She defeated Rin Kadokura at Seadlinnng on 12/21, then teamed with Kaho Kobayashi at Wave on 12/25 to defeat Yumi Oka and Natsu Sumire, and then defeated Fairy Nipponbashi, Hikaru Shida, Kagetsu, Mika Iida, Misaki Ohata, Sawako Shimono and Yuu Yamagata in an eight-way elimination match at Daijo the same day to complete the sweep of the week. This is another name to look out for as 2017 gets going full swing.

#5 Ayuma Honda-It’s another first as the UWA World Middleweight Champion gets a first-time ranking as Honda defeated Dinosaur Takuma and Kotaro Yoshino in a three-way at Kaientai Dojo on 12/23 and then defeated Yuma on 12/25 to retain the title to go 2-0 for the week. Hell of a week for Honda as 2017 kicks off with a lot of first-time rankings, but as history has shown us, it’s tough to get back to the Top 10 after early success. Some wait months. Some wait years. Can Honda prove to be more than a one-hit wonder this year? Stay tuned…
#6 Isami Kodaka
#7 “Mean” Mitch Page
#8 James Drake
#9 Tripp Cassidy
#10 Matt Tremont
