Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of October 17th, 2016

#1 Bomb Shelter (Joseph Schwartz & Zodiak)-The bodies just kept piling up last week as this dominant combination went 3-0 with a flawless sweep. Despite suffering a knee injury, Joseph Schwartz was able to power through with the help of the deranged monster, Zodiak. The WCWO Tag Team Champions beat The Brotherhood at IWA Mid-South on 10/13, then beat Shad Satu & One Cent Phil Pinball at WCWO on 10/14 to retain the titles, and then beat Shad Satu & Ram Jam on 10/15 at IWA Mid-South to go 3-0 for the week. This team has had a sensational 2016 and you can expect to see them in the Tag Team Top 50 at the end of the year, but the question is…how high will their ranking be? Schwartz should only miss a couple of weeks, so this duo is hoping their momentum picks right back up as soon as he’s ready to compete again.

#2 Yankee Two Kenju (Isami Kodaka & Yuko Miyamoto)-After a GREAT 2015, this team has been relatively quiet in 2016. That silence all changed this past week at Big Japan as they swept the week with a 4-0 record. Their week was so good that they came VERY close to grabbing the #1 ranking this week, but were edged out slightly by the Bomb Shelter. They teamed with Takumi Tsukamoto on 10/10 to defeat Kankuro Hoshino, “Kokutenshi” Jaki Numazawa and Masaya Takahashi, then defeated Masashi Takeda and Takayuki Ueki on 10/11, then defeated Abdullah Kobayashi and Takayuki Ueki on 10/13, and then defeated Ryuji Ito and Toshiyuki Sakuda on 10/14 to complete their flawless week. If they can continue to pick up wins, they still have time to make a big impact on this year’s Tag Team Top 50.

#3 BJ Strong (Yuji Okabayashi & Daisuke Sekimoto)-The All Japan World Tag Team Champions make a rare appearance in the Tag Team Top 5 this week. In 2015 they were dominant, but many of their matches in 2016 don’t count towards our rankings (such as their title defense at All Japan over the weekend). That being said, they still went 3-0 at Big Japan on the week and like Yankee Two Kenju, they return to the rankings with a clean sweep. They defeated Hideyoshi Kamitani and Yoshihisa Uto at BJW on 10/11, then teamed with Tsuyoshi Kicuchi on 10/13 to defeat Yasufumi Nakanoue, Masashi Takeda & Yoshihisa Uto, and then defeated SMOP (Akebono and Ryota Hama) to make it three wins and no losses. Here’s another team with the strong potential to get themselves a great 2016 Tag Team Top 50 ranking if they can continue this momentum.

#4 Yapper Man #1 and #2 (Speed of Sounds-Tsutomo Oosugi & Hercules Senga)-Last week’s #1 tag team changed their personas at Michinoku Pro where they won the Futaritabi Tournament 2016 after defeating GAINA & Taro Nohashi on 10/10. They returned back to their Speed of Sounds personas as they teamed with Toshiyuki Sakuda at BJW on 10/13 to defeat Brahman Shu, Brahman Kei & Jaki Numazawa and then teamed with Shinobu at BJW on 10/14 to defeat Brahman Shu, Brahman Kei and Tatsuhiko Yoshino to go 3-0 for the week. This is a tag team who, regardless of the name their competing under, has had an absolutely incredible 2016 thus far.

#5 KRAKEN (Chip Day & Murder-1)-The AWE Tag Team Champions return to the Tag Team Top 5 this week after beating one of the very best tag teams in all of professional wrestling in The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter). Their victory was a successful title defense of the AWE tag titles at UIW. These two are very dangerous competitors and with the strength of some of their recent victories, there’s no reason you won’t be seeing them again in the Tag Team Top 5 this year if they keep winning and defending their titles.

People’s Champs. VIP (Jarrod Idol & Jax Jordan)-The NEW Insane Championship Wrestling Tag Team Champions were awarded a spot on the poll after beating Keegan & Turkish, A.T.O. and Kings of KO in a Four-Way in Australia on 10/15 to win the titles. 93 votes later and they won their first People’s Champs award, edging out Days of Rage to win the online voting competition this week. Indy Power Rankings for the Week of October 17th, 2016

#1 Zack Sabre Jr. (@zacksabrejr)-The “Technical Wizard” does it again! Zack Sabre Jr’s phenomenal year just continues to get better as the PWG World and RevPro British Champion picked up some quality wins at EVOLVE over the weekend. On 10/15 at EVOLVE he defeated Tracy Williams and then followed that up with a win vs. FIP World Champion Fred Yehi on 10/16 to go 2-0 for the week. The respect level for ZSJ among the independent wrestling community is at an all-time high as he is 3-time #1 this year. Despite having some of his time taken up by the Cruiserweight Classic, he’s still killing it on the indies in 2016 and EVOLVE has been a huge part of his success. Will his next title be the EVOLVE title? It’s entirely possible.

#2 Chris Hero (@TheChrisHero)-Last week’s #1 drops just one spot after a weekend that was just as good or better than the weekend of Zack Sabre Jr. With wins vs. Drew Gulak at EVOLVE on 10/15 and Matt Riddle at EVOLVE on 10/16, it’s hard to deny that Hero was right there with Sabre for this week’s top spot. It’s really difficult to argue against either one of them at the top spot this week, but in the end, it’s likely ZSJ’s year as a whole combined with his current status as a multiple title holder that gave him a slight edge over Hero. That said, Hero has been absolutely AMAZING in 2016. Despite a lack of gold, he has been having fantastic match after fantastic match no matter where he goes. Keep an eye on him as 2016 winds down and we head into 2017. He’s in top form right now.

#3 Fenix-We don’t often get a lot of Mexican talent in the Top 10 due to our decision to keep AAA and CMLL out of the equation. This week was different as Fenix cracked the Top 10 with a HUGE victory over Jeff Cobb, Sonjay Dutt, and Jonathan Gresham in a Four-Way at Lucha Ilimitado on 10/12 to become the inaugural Corzon de Oro Champion. That wasn’t the end of his weekend as he defeated Rey Horus at Mucha Lucha on 10/26 to go 2-0 for the week. He was the consensus 2 or 3 for most official voters this week after a couple of impressive victories combined with his status as one of the better luchadores going today. If he can continue this momentum, you may see him pop up in this year’s IPR 100.

#4 Tyler Bate (@Tyler_Bate)-Britain’s favorite mustache gets his first ranking in quite a while as he became the new wXw Shotgun Champion after back-to-back victories on 10/14 and 10/15 at wXw. He won a #1 contenders match on 10/14 when he beat Da Mack and Marius Al-Ani and then beat Pete Dunne the next day to win the title. The win over Pete Dunne was particularly important as Pete Dunne has been ranked multiple times this year in the Indy Power Rankings. Bate, who has been splitting his time as ½ of the CHIKARA Campoenatos de Parejas, is looking to make a run at the IPR 100 after his big weekend in Germany.

#5 Bob “Hardcore” Holly (@TheBobHolly)-We get a surprising name in the Top 10 as Bob Holly picked up two VERY big wins over the weekend against two of the top talents in all of wrestling. On 10/14 at HOH he defeated Sami Callihan. If that wasn’t enough he defeated Ethan Carter III at HOH/IWC on 10/15 to go 2-0 for the week. In terms of level of opponents, very few people in the Top 10 had a better weekend than Holly. Again, if it were an apples to apples comparison, he might even be #1 this week, but Holly isn’t quite as active as the talent ahead of him and his ranking likely suffered due to that. Regardless, he’s #5 and that’s pretty damn good.

#6 Alberto El Patron

#7 Shady Nattrass

#8 Adrian Armour

#9 Chasyn Rance

#10 WALTER

People’s Champ. His Royal Tenis (@His_Royal_Tenis)-Australia and QWA in particular make another impact in the Indy Power Rankings this week as His Royal Tenis made it look easy by winning the online voting competition this week to become “People’s Champ.” He got on the poll as he defeated Rocko Rumble for the QWA Global Title on 10/15. His fans and supporters came together and helped him get the #1 spot in the fan vote this week to go with him being ½ of the WA Tag Team Champions and the aforementioned QWA Global Champion.
