Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of August 15th, 2016

#1 Da Hit Squad (Dan Maff & Monsta Mack)-Chalk up a third #1 ranking for Da Hit Squad as the CZW World Champions continue their dominance of 2016. It was a very difficult week to judge as far as tag teams. In the end, it was the prestige of the CZW Tag Team Titles and the overall year-to-date for DHS that helped them achieve the #1 spot yet again. Their victory over Scarlet and Graves (Dezmond Xavier & Zachary Wentz) on 8/13 to retain the titles was a good one, but there’s little doubt that their name value as a team and the weight of the titles they carry made a HUGE difference in the eyes of the official voters. One another note: they came in third in the online voting competition this week proving their popularity is still strong as well.

#2 The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter @BeardedBullys)-For the second straight week, Devin & Mason Cutter grab the #2 spot as the FIP World Tag Team Champions rode their titles to another ranking this year. Despite being behind at the mid-year mark, they are in the hunt for the top spot as we move into the last quarter of 2016. The FIP (and SWF) World Tag Team Champions defeated Dirty Blondes (Michael Patrick & Leo Brien) at FIP on 8/12 to retain the titles. Much like DHS, it was all about the titles and name value for the Hooligans that helped propel them to yet another high ranking in the Tag Team Top 5. No further explanation needed.

#3 Over Generation (CIMA & Gamma)-You just never know who Dragon Gate will produce week in and week out in the Tag Team Top 5 and this week was no different. With a serious lack of multiple win teams this week, the official voters looked to the ol’ reliable promotion in Japan for talent and they came up with Over Generation as they defeated Futa Nakamura & Masaaki Mochizuki at Dragon Gate on 8/11 and then defeated El Lindaman & Masaaki Mochizuki the same day to go 2-0 for the week. Despite multiple mentions and rankings for the stable this year, this is the first ranking for this duo in 2016.

#4 Los Japoneses del Mal (Daisuke Hanoaka & Douki)-It’s the first ranking for this team as they dominated IWRG in Mexico last week. They teamed with Yokuza to defeat Black Dragon , Fire Man & Omega at IWRG in Mexico on 8/10, then defeated Tigre Rojo & Tigre Rojo Jr. at Toryumon Mexico on 8/14, and then teamed with Yokuza at IWRG the same day to defeat Dragon Fly, Emperador Azteca & Vampiro Metalico II on 8/14 to go 3-0 for the week. While they definitely had enough wins to achieve a #1 ranking, perhaps the “quality” wasn’t there as compared to a couple of the well-known titleholders in the U.S. right now.

#5 Tribe Vanguard (BxB Hulk & YAMATO)-More success for Dragon Gate as this team cracks the Tag Team Top 5 for the very first time. They had a very busy week as they teamed with Don Fujii at Dragon Gate on 8/8 to defeat Jimmyz (Jimmy Kagetora & Ryo Jimmy Saito) & Stalker Ichikawa twice, then teamed with Yosuke Santa Maria on 8/11 to defeat Over Generation (Dragon Kid, Eita & Takehiro Yamamura) then fought VerserK (Shingo Takagi and Cyber Kong) to a time limit draw on 8/14 to go 3-0-1 for the week. Look for them to continue this success if this week was any indication of things to come.

People’s Champs. The Bro-Tein Pack (Mike C-Way, DynaMike Davis, & TJ Blade)-The NEW UWA Elite Tag Team and Trios Champions got on the poll by defeating Unstoppabulls (Jon Rome & Brandon the Bull) & Brandon Kirk on 8/13 to win both sets of titles. 142 votes from their fans later and they EASILY won the online voting competition and their first People’s Champs award. It’s rare that a three-man team can dominate a fan vote like this, but they made it look easy.
