Indy Power Rankings for the Week of August 1st, 2016

#1 Marty Scurll (@MartyScurll)-This is long overdue for Marty Scurll as he had two very close calls earlier in the year where he JUST missed out on the #1 ranking. He had no such issues this week as he had two tremendous victories to elevate him to his first #1 ranking. On 7/29 he took his talents to PWG in Reseda, CA where he scored what many would consider an upset as he defeated Sami Callihan. “The Villain” then earned redemption as he defeated William Eaver at PROGRESS in the UK on 7/31 to win the PROGRESS Title to go 2-0 for the week. Two opponents. Two victories. One more title around his waist. It has been one amazing year for Marty Scurll thus far.
#2 Kongo Kong (@RealKongoKong)-Wrestling’s true “MONSTA” is back yet again this year as he continues his impressive 2016. The most consistent wrestler on the indies over the past 3 years continued that same success at Strong Style Wrestling over the weekend as he won two different matches against multiple opponents. He defeated familiar opponents in Hy Zaya and Shane Mercer at the joint SSW/RCW/PWK event on 7/30 to retain the Strong Style Heavyweight Title and then beat Brutus Dylan and Kevin Thorn at SSW on 7/31 to retain again to go 2-0 for the week. Unfortunately his win at GFW doesn’t count towards our rankings, but regardless, the big man had one hell of a week to continue his Indy Power Rankings dominance this year. He was also tied for sixth in the online voting competition with 25 votes.
#3 Ivelisse (@RealIvelisse)-The former Indy Power Rankings #1 and current SHINE Champion returns to the rankings this week a couple of impressive victories over the weekend. On 7/30 at the joint SSW/RCW/PWK event she defeated Melanie Cruise and then knocked off Kelly Klein at SSW on 7/31 to go 2-0 for the week. In 2016 it appears that she has returned to her place as perhaps the most dominant female on the indies as she has been getting ranked and/or mentioned in our rankings left and right. She has had a VERY impressive year and if that continues, she could push for a Top 10 spot in the year-end IPR 100.
#4 Slade Mercer (@kiwiwrestler)-We get representation from New Zealand here in the Top 10 this week as Slade Mercer (now wrestling out of Australia) picked up three tremendous victories. He teamed with Gabriel Wolfe at OCW in Australia on 7/29 to defeat Mike Burr & Josh Shooter, then won a 15-man battle royal at HVW on 7/30, and then defeated Syd Parker the same night to win the title to go 3-0 for the week. Very few competitors had more than 2 victories this week so when someone has 3 victories including a big battle royal win and a title win, it’s hard to ignore that type of success. Congrats on Slade Mercer on a HUGE ranking.
#5 Wolfgang (@wolfgangyoung)-What a week for a competitor who had really been flying under the radar up until this week. The SPW British Heavyweight and NEW ICW World Heavyweight Champion defeated Noam Dar at ICW on 7/29, then defeated Kenny Williams on 7/30, then teamed with The Black Label (Drew Galloway & Jack Jester) on 7/31 to lose to Team Mark Dallas (Noam Dar, Grado & Sha Samuels) and then defeated Joe Coffey the same night to win the title to go 3-1 for the week. Despite the tag loss, it really was an amazing week of competition for Wolfgang as he gets a #5 ranking amongst a great crop of talent.
#6 Jack Thriller (@jackthriller9)-We get the return of a very familiar face this week as “The Serial Killer” Jack Thriller gets himself back into the Top 10 after two big wins, one of which being perhaps the biggest win of his career. The RCW Heavyweight Champion defeated Buff Bagwell at the joint SSW/RCW/PWK event on 7/30 to retain the title and then beat Luke Lawson at SSW on 7/31 to go 2-0 for the week with two title defenses. You can’t really ask for much more from Thriller as he had a standout weekend on the indies once again.
#7 Zack Sabre Jr (@zacksabrejr)-It was very difficult to determine how and where to rank “The Technical Wizard” this week after an up and down week for ZSJ. It appeared he was a lock for #1 this week as the PWG World Champion defeated Kyle O’Reilly on 7/29 to retain the title and then beat Roderick Strong the same day in a No DQ Match. He flew cross country to Beyond in Rhode Island on 7/31 to lose to Jonathan Gresham to end his week at 2-1. While many times the official voters can overlook a tag loss, it was impossible to completely disregard his singles loss to Gresham. That being said, he still had a great week and it was good enough to get him all the way up to #7.
#8 Dezmond Xavier (@DezmondXavier)-“The Unleashed One” was unleashed on the Top 10 this week as the former Indy Power Rankings People’s Champ flew his way into a couple of victories. He picked up two impressive wins as he beat Remi Wilkins at Rockstar Pro on 7/27 and then followed that up with a win vs. Jeremy Hadley in a Loser Leaves Town Match at Emerge on 7/30. He also picked up 15 votes to come in 9th in the online voting competition this week. Dezmond Xavier appears to be a can’t miss prospect, so keep your eye on this high-flyer.
#9 Yasu Urano-This is the first ranking for Yasu Urano after a FANTASTIC week in Japan with four victories. The week started out strong with a win vs. Atsushi Maruyama at Mr Gannosuke Production on 7/26, he then teamed with HARASHIMA at DDT on 7/29 to defeat Toru Owashi and Guanchulo, then defeated MAO at DDT on 7/30, and then teamed with HARASHIMA & Akito on 7/31 to defeat Konosuke Takeshita, Antonio Honda and Trans-Am*Hiroshi to go 4-0 for the week. While a couple of Urano’s wins were in tag team competition, a 4-0 week is still a great way to break away from the pack and that’s exactly what Yasu Urano did this week.
#10 Masato Tanaka-The grizzled and scarred up veteran gets back into the Top 10 this week as ½ of the NWA Intercontinental Tag Team Champions defeated Masaya Takahashi at Asuka Project on 7/28, then teamed with Dynamite Kansai at Zero1 on 7/29 to defeat Aja Kong and Kintaro Kanemura, and then defeated Ryoto Hama at Zero1 on 7/31 to go 3-0 for the week. Tanaka may be a name that most people remember from ECW, but he’s still doing big things where ever he goes, particularly in Japan.
People’s Champ. AC Riley (@WrongAlexRiley)-AC Riley came from behind to win the online voting competition and yet another People’s Champ award this week. The RCCW City of La Crosse Champion defeated Nathan Sensation at RCCW to retain his title and undefeated streak there and then teamed with Tiny Love at RWA on 7/30 to defeat Glam Slam 2.0 (Spiderbaby and Ian “X-Man” Xavier) to go 2-0 for the week to get himself on the poll. His fans took care of the rest with 114 votes to get him another People’s Champ award. Give his Facebook page a like at
