#1 Catch Point (Drew Gulak & Tracy Williams)-The official voting this week was VERY close yet again. In the end, it was the prestige of the EVOLVE Tag Team Title victory and the strength of competition as to who they beat. On 4/1 they defeated Heroes Eventually Die (Chris Hero & Tommy End) at EVOLVE and then followed that up on 4/2 with the big title win as they beat Drew Galloway and Johnny Gargano to win the EVOLVE Tag Team Titles. There was a STRONG argument for Devastation Corporation at #1 and it really could have gone either way, but it did help Catch Point quite a bit that they edged them out in the online voting competition/fan vote. Because of all the factors mentioned above, Catch Point now have their first #1 ranking proving yet again how important the EVOLVE Tag Team Titles are as they’ve produced more than one #1 this year.
#2 Devastation Corporation (Blaster McMassive & Flex Rumblecrunch)-The closest competition for the overall #1 this week come from CHIKARA as this massive tag team won the Tag World Grand Prix 2016 after a 3-0 week. There’s definitely an argument to be had for them to be #1 this week, but again, the fan vote did them no favors. On 4/2 they defeated The Punk Rock All Stars (Drake Carter & Shaun Cannon) at Chikara, then defeated The Osirian Portal (Amasis & Ophidian) in the Semi-Finals the same day, and then defeated The Colony (Fire Ant & Worker Ant) in the Finals to win the tournament. We’ve seen it in the past from the Devastation Corporation where if they pick up some good momentum, they could be scary for the rest of the year. We’ll see if 2016 turns out to be their year.
#3 Heisei Gokudo Combi (Kankuro Hoshino & Masato Inaba)-Let’s talk about an insanely busy week at Big Japan for a second. This team was working non-stop as they teamed with Abdullah Kobayashi at BJW on 3/29 to defeat Brahman Kei, Brahman Shu & Masashi Takeda, then teamed with Masashi Takeda to defeat Daichi Hashimoto, Hideyoshi Kamitani & Kazumi Kikuta, then teamed with Ryuji Ito the same day to defeat Yankee Two Kenju (Isami Kodaka & Yuko Miyamoto) & Abdullah Kobayashi, then teamed with Daisuke Sekimoto & Abdullah Kobayashi on 3/30 to defeat Isami Kodaka, Yuko Miyamoto, Tsutomu Osugi and Frank Atsushi, then lost the same day to “Kokutenshi” Jaki Numazawa and Tsutomu Osugi, and then teamed with Takumi Tsukamoto and Masaya Takahashi on 3/31 to defeat Ryuji Ito, Abdullah Kobayashi, “Kokutenshi” Jaki Numazawa and Masashi Takeda in a Scramble Bunkhouse Street Fight Death Match to go 5-1 for the week. There’s no doubt this team is going to take some time to recover, but when they do, if they can keep up this type of schedule, you’ll likely see them again in our rankings.
#4 People’s Champs. Indy Card Mafia (Eric Emanon & Thomas Brewington)-This tag team earns their second online voting competition and first official ranking this week after a strong week in the Northeast. On 4/1 they defeated Sonny Kiss & Jamie Senegal at Sanctuary and then defeated Rah Wonders & Apollo Stone at NGW on 4/2. A 2-0 week got them on the poll and it was the fans who single-handedly pushed them into their first ranking with their support. 48 votes from the fans was what it took this week for ICM to dominate the other contenders this week in the online voting competition. The now two-time People’s Champs are on a roll as they look to continue this success for the remainder of 2016. #5 Monster Express (Akira Tozawa & Masato Yoshino)-Now HERE’s a familiar tag team from 2015. The Monster Express have quietly been picking up wins in 2016 without as much attention as in 2015…but it has certainly worked well for them as they are 2/3’s of the Dragon Gate Open the Triangle Gate Champions. They had another impressive week at Dragon Gate as they teamed with Big R Shimizu and T-Hawk at Dragon Gate on 3/28 to defeat VerserK (Kotoka, Naruki Doi, Shingo Takagi & YAMATO) then teamed with Shachihoko BOY on 4/2 to defeat Jimmyz (Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!!, Jimmy Susumu and Ryo “Jimmy” Saito) and then teamed with Big R Shimizu on 4/3 to defeat VerserK (Shingo Takagi, Naruki Doi and YAMATO) to go 3-0 for the week. Look out for them to make another splash in the Tag Team Top 50 this year.
