Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of February 29th, 2016

#1 Spring Street Suicide Squad (Chris Crunk & Ken Lee)-We really shouldn’t be surprised at this point, but yet again, we get ANOTHER NEW #1 in the Tag Team Top 5. 2016 has been the year where the tag team rankings have been absolutely all over the place with so much parity that it’s tough to keep track of. NINE different teams have been ranked #1 this year with no teams doing it more than once. SSSS earned the right to be #1 this week as they became the NEW UIW Tag Team Champions, defeating Roscoe Eat Lisa and then The Hooligans to win the tournament for the vacant titles. It took two colossal wins to get them their first #1, but they were most definitely very good wins. Look out for them to try to make another run depending on when and who they defend those titles against next.

#2 Dragons Creed-This is a team that is very unfamiliar to us but they still end up with the #2 spot this week. They are the new CHWA Tag Team Champions after winning the tournament for the vacant titles. They beat Manny & Prater in the First Round, then Paranoia in the Semi-Finals, and then #ProStatus in the Finals on 2/22 to go 3-0 on the week. While they did have more wins than SSSS this week, their strength of competition was just not at their level. If they can keep picking up wins you may see more of them in 2016 as well.

#3 Flawless & Lawless (Blake Morris & Rex Lawless)-The #32 ranked team in the 2015 Tag Team Top 50 gets their first ranking of 2016 as they defeated Anthony Nese & Chuck Taylor to retain the NYWC Tag Team Titles on 2/27 and then beat Marty Flames & Ricky Richards at the joint NYWC/SWA on 2/28 to retain again with a 2-0 record for this week. Their week was as good as anyone’s, especially with that big win over Taylor & Nese. They’ve definitely got some momentum now, so the question will be if they can do what very few teams have been able to do this year and build on that momentum. It’s been a year where few teams are dominant. Can Flawless & Lawless become one of the dominant teams in 2016?

#4 Brahman Brothers (Brahman Kei & Brahman Shu)-The award for busiest week in independent wrestling would likely have to go to this team this past week. With a 4-1 record they get the #4 ranking as they were busy as hell in Japan. The UWA Tag Team Champions teamed with Ryuji Ito at BJW on 2/22 to defeat B Faultless Junky’s (Jaki Numazawa & Masashi Takeda) & Takayuki Ueki, then teamed with Takayuki Ueki at BJW on 2/25 to lose to Speed Of Sounds (Hercules Senga & Tsutomu Oosugi) & Yuichi Taniguchil, then defeated Naoshi Sano & The Great Nita at FMW on 2/26, then teamed with The Great Sasuke at Michinoku Pro on 2/27 to defeat Daichi Sasaki, Kenbai & Taro Nohashi, and then teamed with Great Sasuke at Michinoku Pro on 2/28 to defeat Bad Boy (Ken45, Manjimaru & Takeshi Minamino) to finish the week almost completely unscathed. Had it not been for the lone loss, they likely would have been the clear cut #1 this week.

#5 Lightspeed Express (Robbie Eagles & Matt Diamond)-This team was actually tied with The Dirty Blondes for the #5 spot this week but the fans came through for them as it was just 7 votes that helped them get this spot. This team defeated Adam Hoffman and Jack Bonza in the Semi-Finals of the King of the Castle Tournament on 2/28 and then beat Social Media Studs in the Finals the same day to win the tournament with a 2-0 record. Their wins at Newcastle Pro in Australia once again helped to prove how truly international the Indy Power Rankings have become with Australia always being one of the major players.

People’s Champs. Stable #12 (Josh Calisto & Derek Cobain)-The RCCW Tag Team Champions represent River City Championship Wrestling proudly as the People’s Champs this week as that company just keeps churning out winners in the online voting competition. This team got on the ballot by beating former People’s Champs The Dojo Boys on 2/26 to retain the titles. They then collected 54 votes to BARELY win this week’s close vote.
