Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of February 15th, 2016

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of February 15th, 2016

#1 The Cause (Evan Gelistico & Adam Caster)-Our year of firsts continues this week! For the first time, The Cause have achieved a #1 ranking in the Tag Team Top 5. Granted, they haven’t been teaming that long, but it still speaks volumes about how good their weekend was at St. Louis Anarchy. On 2/13 they defeated The Hooligans and Team IOU and then they teamed with Austin Blackburn & Danny Adams on 2/14 to beat The Viking War Party and The Hooligans in an 8-Man Tag Team Elimination Match. Both of these wins were particularly impressive as they beat the who’s who of Midwest tag team wrestling. From The Hooligans to Team IOU to the Viking War Party…they now have a claim to a win over all of them…in ONE weekend! Congratulations to Saint Louis Anarchy on another great weekend of shows and congrats to The Cause on their first #1 as a team!

#2 Sex Mafia (David Nero & Michael Morleone)-Australia comes through with one of the highest rankings to come from that continent! Sex Mafia earned their #2 ranking this week after they won the Headshrinker Samu Legacy Cup Tournament at NHPW on 2/13. They defeated Perth K9 (Dane & Odin) in the semi-finals of the tournament and then beat The Death Machines (Chris Vice & Jarrad Slate) to win the tournament with a 2-0 weekend record. While Australia has been strongly represented in the Indy Power Rankings and more specifically the Tag Team Top 5 in the past, this is clearly the best showing they’ve had in the official rankings. If Sex Mafia can build on this weekend, you’ll no doubt see them popping up (no pun intended) in the 2016 Tag Team Top 50.

#3 TV Ready (BLK Jeez & Pepper Parks)-The CZW World Tag Team Champions get back to the Tag Team Top 5 this week after they beat a very good team in EYFBO (Angel Ortiz & Mike Draztik) on 2/13 to retain the titles. This is their second #3 ranking and their first time being ranked in 2016. There are a lot of great challengers starting to line up for a crack at their titles. If they can continue to retain these titles with the type of competition that CZW is known for bringing in, you’ll be seeing a lot more of them in the Indy Power Rankings Tag Team Top 5 this year.

#4 Jimmyz (Jimmy K-ness JKS, Ryo “Jimmy” Saito & Jimmy Kanda)-Last year was all about The Monster Express stable at Dragon Gate. Could this year be the year of The Jimmyz stable? So far so good for this group. This 3-Man team joined up to defeat Gamma, El Lindaman and Kaito Ishida at Dragon Gate on 2/11 and then teamed with Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!! on 2/14 to defeat Gamma, Punch Tominaga, El Lindaman and Takehiro Yamamura to go 2-0 for the week. Much of their ranking likely has to do with their past success in 2016 as they’ve been mentioned in one form or another multiple times. This is actually the first official ranking of 2016 for any team from the group, so congrats to them on their first of perhaps many more.

#5 Arik Royal & Ray Kandrack-The CWF Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Champions found their way into the Top 5 again this week as they defeated Michael McAllister & Sis on 2/13 to retain the titles. We said it earlier this year, but this team has a lot of momentum going for them combined with CWF Mid-Atlantic running frequently. This is their third official ranking of 2016 and while it’s not a HUGE ranking, they all add up when it comes to the year-end Tag Team Top 50. Will we be seeing this duo on the year-end list? 10 months to go!

People’s Champs. The Brothers Awe (Alfie & Otis Awe @The_BrothersAwe)-This tag team/podcasting duo came out of nowhere to win their first People’s Champs award this week. The team collected 67 votes to win the online voting competition after beating Andy Simmonz & Jonny Storm at UPW in the UK on 2/12 to get on the poll. This is a tag team that has some solid fan support and if they can turn that into more wins, you’ll be seeing more and more of them in our rankings throughout 2016.
