Indy Power Rankings for the Week of February 8th, 2016

#1 Rampage Brown (@RampageBrown)-This wasn’t even close. Every single official voter had Rampage Brown at #1 on their ballot this week after he won the PCW Road to Glory Tournament over the weekend. ½ of the PCW Tag Team Champions beat Chris Dickinson in the First Round on 2/5, then beat Matt Hardy on 2/6 in the Second Round, then beat T-Bone in the Semi-Finals, and then scored what many would consider an upset by beating Drew Galloway in the Finals the same night. A 4-0 record nets Rampage Brown his second #1 ranking and first of 2016. After being #92 in the 2014 IPR 100 and moving up to #33 in the 2015 IPR 100, he’s already proving that he might be able to top both of those rankings in 2016.
#2 Zack Sabre Jr. (@zacksabrejr)-ZSJ stays right where he was at last week as he’s #2 for the second straight week. The RPW British Heavyweight Champion defeated Timothy Thatcher at wXw in Germany on 2/6 and then beat Will Ospreay at RPW on 2/7 to retain the title for a 2-0 week. Two HUGE wins most certainly helped him retain the #2 spot this week. Here’s a tidbit for anyone keeping score at home…if the 2016 IPR 100 were to hit today, Zack Sabre Jr., despite not having a #1 ranking this year, would be sitting pretty in the #1 spot. That would certainly be an improvement from his #17 ranking in 2015 and his #41 ranking in 2014. He’s considered by many to be the best technical wrestler in the world for a reason.

#3 Pete Dunne (@DynamiteDunne)-It’s been an incredible start to 2016 for Pete Dunne who is looking to move up from his 2015 IPR 100 Ranking of #46 this year. This is his second official ranking this year and the highest so far as his previous ranking was a #4. The RPW British Cruiserweight, OTT No Limits, Attack 24/7 and PWK Champion defeated Tyler Bate at FCP on 2/5, then defeated Johnny Kidd at PWC on 2/6, and then defeated Sonjay Dutt at RPW on 2/7 to go 3-0 for the week. The UK takes the top 3 spots this week with a stellar week of shows. There’s no doubt that British wrestling has a huge influence on the Indy Power Rankings over the last couple of years.

#4 Estonian Thunderfrog (@EstonianTfrog)-One of the most uniquely entertaining characters in all of independent wrestling gets his highest ranking to date and his first in over 2 years. ½ of the PTW Tag Team Champions went to CHIKARA on 2/6 where he defeated Mike Verna, Rock Lobster and Willow Nightingale in the First Round of the Young Lions Cup Tournament, then defeated Nutrious X in the Semi-Finals, and then defeated Wani in the Finals to go 3-0 for the week. His win in the Young Lions Cup XII Tournament for the vacant Young Lions Cup title has to be unquestionably the biggest of his career and it pays off with a major ranking this week.

#5 Timmy Lou Retton-“Professional Wrestling’s only Gymnast” continues to impress as he went 3-0 for the week. The GOUGE Heavyweight Champion added another belt to his collection when he defeated Benny Connely in a Qualifying Match on 2/6, then beat Mighty Hojo, Rusty Shank, & Danny Romero to win the title. He followed up on those big wins by beating Barron Bullard at CWS on 2/7 to retain the title. Retton has been doing everything in his power to get out there and improve. While doing so, he may just improve on his 2015 IPR 100 Ranking of #80. We shall see.

#6 Amazing Maria aka Maria James (@Amazing_Maria)-What a week for Amazing Maria (or Maria James if you prefer)! She teamed with Hayley Shadows & Ray Lyn at Girl Fight on 2/2 to defeat Savannah Evans, Scarlett Bordeaux & Solo Darling, then (as Maria James) defeated Nutty Nancy at OVW on 2/3, then defeated Jessie Belle at OVW on 2/6 to win the title, and then finally (as Amazing Maria) defeated Hayley Shadows at HPW the same night to go 4-0 for the week. This is her first official ranking and now with some gold to defend, she has a chance to build on it and get ranked more frequently.

#7 Drew Galloway (@GallowaySpeaks)-Surprisingly, this is the first official SINGLES ranking of 2016 for the former Drew McIntyre. Last year’s #3 in the IPR 100 (and #14 in 2014) had a chance to get his first #1 this week but came up just short. ½ of the EVOLVE Tag Team Champions beat Martin Kirby at PCW in the First Round of the Road To Glory Tournament, then beat Mr. Anderson on 2/6 in the Second Round, then beat Noam Dar in the Semi-Finals the same night, before falling to Rampage Brown in the Finals. A 3-1 record isn’t perfect, but it DOES get him a #7 ranking which on a week that was highly competitive, is not bad at all. Let’s see if he can continue to get ranked in an attempt to somehow top last year’s ranking in the IPR 100.

#8 Sha Samuels (@Shasamuels)-Believe it or not, this is the first official ranking in singles ranking for the WWL Champion (and ½ of the ICW and RPW Tag Team Champions). On 2/5 he teamed with Iestyn Rees at PCW to defeat Dave Mastiff and Dave Rayne. He then scored the upset over Dave Mastiff on 2/6 to become the NEW PCW Heavyweight Champion. With the prestige of his title win, he gets into the Top 10 for the very first time. If you look up and down the Top 10, you’ll see that these PCW shows produced a lot of good rankings. Sha Samuels will have many opportunities to build on this ranking throughout 2016, no doubt.

#9 Liam Thomson (@liamthomson51)-FANTASTIC weekend for Liam Thomson as he gets his first official singles ranking. He defeated Johnny Lions at W3L on 2/5, then teamed with Morado & Nathan Reynolds the same night to beat The Contingency Plan, then beat Sonjay Dutt, Kid Fite, & BT Gunn at Rock n Wrestle on 2/6 to win the title for a 3-0 record for the week. A lot of casual fans in the U.S. may not know who Liam Thomson is yet, but with weekends like this, there’s no doubt that his stock and status will start to grow this year.

#10 Marty Scurll (@MartyScurll)-“Party Marty” gets his second ranking in 2016 after a very solid week in Germany and the UK. The PROGRESS, NWA British, and UPW Heavyweight Champion defeated Da Mack at wXw in Germany on 2/6 and then beat Timothy Thatcher at RPW on 2/7 to go 2-0 for the week. Officially, Europe (UK really) produced SEVEN rankings this week out of the ten individuals who were ranked in this week’s Indy Power Rankings. Keep an eye on all this talent as they may be making trips to the U.S. more and more frequently.

People’s Champ. Live Wire (@Live_Wire18)-The MN JPW Generations Champion defeated Montezuma in a Last Man Standing Match at EPW on 2/6 to retain the title, which got him on the ballot. His fans took care of the rest as he collected 198 votes (99 more than the second place vote getter) to win this week’s online voting competition. This is his second People’s Champ award and his first of 2016. You can like his Facebook page here:
