Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of January 18th, 2016

#1 The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter @BeardedBullys)-Oh those Hooligans are at it again! The AAW (and FIP) Tag Team Champions return to what they believe is their rightful place atop the Tag Team Top 5 after a big weekend for them. The back-to-back (2014 & 2015) #1’s in the Tag Team Top 50 had their first really good weekend of the year defeated Rockstar Pro Tag Team Champions (and former #1’s) Grits & Gravy in a Non-Title Match on 1/14, then beat Zero Gravity at AAW on 1/15 to retain the AAW Titles, and then beat American Viking and Ozzie Gallagher at SNPW on 1/16 to go 3-0 for the week. Much like 2015, their start to the year has been very slow after taking some L’s here and there, but they still hold two sets of very important titles and it doesn’t look like these Bearded Bullies are dropping that gold any time soon as they continue to prove while they’re the most successful tag team on the INDIES for two years running.

#2 People’s Champ. Team IOU (Kerry Awful & Nick Iggy @TeamIOU)-The more things change, the more they stay the same. It’s an old adage, but a good one as Team IOU returned to NWA SAW and regained the titles that helped them to so much success in 2014. They are once again the NWA Southern Tag Team Champions after defeating Darious Douglas and Phil Rockso on 1/16 and then beating Monster of Mayhem the same night to win the titles. They also beat Brett Ison and David Morton at SWF on 1/15. A 3-0 week gets them their first official ranking of the year as all eyes now look towards PGP’s 2nd Ryan Buckley Memorial Tournament where they’ll look to retain the PGP Tag Team Titles yet again to continue their incredible reign as champions at Proving Gorund Pro. Not to be forgotten, they won their first online voting competition of the year as the perennial People’s Champs collected a very impressive 244 votes to win the fan vote. #3 The Beautiful Bald Besties (Michael Stevens & Zac Edwards)-This team has to have some of the worst luck in terms of timing, BUT, they do grab the #3 ranking this week. The SFCW Tag Team Champions, NEW PWA Tag Team Champions and NEW co-holders of the ASWN Heritage Championships defeated Chip Day & Sal Rinauro at AWSN on 1/15 to jointly win the titles, then at PWA on 1/16 they defeated Southside Trash (Rowdy & Razor) in the first round of the PWA Tag Team Title Tournament, then fought Trending Now to two time limit draws, then defeated Trending Now and AJ Steele & Tyson Dean to win the vacant tag titles to go 4 wins, 2 draws for the week. On almost any other week they’d be sitting in the #1 spot, but with The Hooligans and Team IOU back on track, it was really tough to overcome their amazing weeks. If last year is any indication, this won’t be the last time we’ll be seeing them around the Tag Team Top 5.

#4 Arik Royal & Ray Kandrack-The CWF Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Champions become the first team to be ranked twice during the 2016 year of eligibility. Their first ranking this year was a #5 ranking so they’re definitely making progress as several weeks later they move up to a #4 ranking on a very competitive week. On the surface their win over CB Suave & Innocent Isaiah on 1/16 to retain the titles may not seem like much. It was one win against a team that has never been ranked or mentioned in our rankings before. What likely helped their case this week is that they are UNDEFEATED in two-on-two tag team action. They have won three straight matches as a two man team (they lost a Six Man Tag Team Match on 11/20) and continue to show that as a tag team, these two are just as much of a force to be reckoned with as they were in singles. It will be interesting to see what the rest of 2016 brings for this team in the Carolinas….and beyond?

#5 The Sumerian Death Squad (Michael Dante & Tommy End)-It was a good week for SDS but certainly not as good as some of their weeks in the past few years. That being said, the #22 team in the 2015 Tag Team Top 50 (and #15 team in the 2014 Tag Team Top 50) secured their first ranking of the year when they beat The London Riots at wXw in Germany in a #1 Contender’s Match. The PWH Tag Team Champions have had one hell of a two-year run and we don’t see any reason that won’t continue, barring Tommy End (without Dante) going on an extended U.S. tour this year. With that being said, let’s put this out there once agan; bring SDS to the U.S. in 2016!
