Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of January 4th, 2016

#1 Daisuke Sekimoto & Konosuke Takeshita-As far as the official voters, this really wasn’t even close. Sekimoto & Takeshita made it easy after they won the interpromotional Shuffle Tag Team Tournament on New Year’s Eve. They beat Shigehiro Irie & Hideyoshi Kamitani in the First Round, then defeated Yuji Okabayashi & Danshoku Dino in the Second Found, then defeated Kengo Mashimo & Isami Kodaka in the Semi-Finals, and then defeated HARASHIMA & Yuko Miyamoto in the Finals to win the tournament with a 4-0 record. It was an amazing week for this team as they defeated teams from all over Japan to reign supreme with the clear #1 ranking this week. Next up: KO’D Tag Team Champs? The first two weeks of rankings eligibility for 2016 have been interesting as they were last year. It will be fun to see where 2016 continues to take us as we move forward.

#2 Takashi Sasaki, Mitsuo Momota, & Toru Sugiura-While Sekimoto & Takeshita did enjoy the easy #1 ranking this week, the runaway #2 was this 3-man team. If it wasn’t for Sekimoto & Takeshita’s HUGE week they would have likely been #1. They also won a big 1-Day Tournament as they won the Lottery Scramble at Freedoms on 1/3. They beat Yuya Susumu, Minoru Tanaka and MIKAMI in the First Round, then defeated Jun Kasai, Kenji Fukimoto and Daisuke Masaoka in the Semi-Finals, and then defeated GENTARO, The W*inger and Ken’ichiro Arai in the Finals to win the tournament to go 3-0 for the week. It was an EXTREMELY impressive week for this 3-man team. We saw a couple of 3-man teams in the Tag Team Top 50 for 2015. Will this team be another in 2016?

#3 The Brutes (Mark James & Jimmy Parker @BookTheBrutes)-The NWA Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Champions return to the Top 5 this week after a solid week. They teamed with Brandon Day on January 2nd to defeat The Tar Brothers & Jefferson Early and then followed that up with a win vs. F1rst Generation on January 3rd to retain the titles and go 2-0 for the week. They now have three straight wins as a team as they’re really starting to pick up some momentum at the start of 2016. They JUST missed out on the Tag Team Top 50 in 2014 and 2015. Will this be the year that every team really starts to “Fear The Brutes?”

#4 Ryota Hama & Hideyoshi Kamitani-This team had arguably the most successful and important week of anyone in the Tag Team Top 5 as they won the Big Japan Tag Team Titles after beating BJ Strong to win the gold on 12/30. As if a title win over last year’s #6 in the Tag Team Top 50 wasn’t enough, they followed it up with a win vs. Yoshihisa Uto & Yuji Okabayashi (non-title) on January 2nd to go 2-0 on the week. If they can put together a run like BJ Strong did in 2015, they’re going to be ranked very often in 2016. All success is not the same, however, as you never can tell what a title run may hold.

#5 People’s Champs. The Revolutionists (Sha Samuels & James Castle)-Much like Spain last week, the UK sweeps the online voting competition this week after Will Ospreay won the singles competition and then The Revolutionists won the tag team voting competition. The RPW Tag Team Champions scored a tremendous win over the weekend when they beat Jimmy Havoc & T-Bone on January 3rd to retain the titles. They certainly had some support from the official voters, but the win in the online voting competition helped propel them into their very first ranking. They collected153 votes and their first ranking, which obviously was not a bad week for one of the UK’s top teams.
