2016 Indy Power Rankings Changes

More changes coming to the Indy Power Rankings in 2016!
At the end of every year we evaluate our processes so that we are doing the best possible service we can to independent wrestling as a whole, its fans, and wrestlers alike. In 2015, any matches consisting of wrestlers in WWE, TNA, ROH, GFW, Lucha Underground, or NJPW are ineligible for this list. We simply ignore all matches in these promotions as we do not consider them independent wrestling companies. In 2016 we will be adding NOAH, All Japan, AAA, & CMLL to that list.
The four companies being added (along with the ones that weren’t being considered in the first place) to the ineligible list could be argued for or against as independent wrestling companies. We put it to a vote and felt that leaving them out of the discussion would do no harm to those competing in the companies and clear up more space for other independent wrestlers to get ranked throughout the year. These changes will be implemented starting with next week’s rankings.

As always we will evaluate our rules at the end of the year once again. Thanks for your support!

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of December 21st, 2015

#1 Flawless and Lawless (Blake Morris & Rex Lawless)-Much like To Infinity and Beyond and Grits and Gravy, this team finally gets their due with their first-ever #1 ranking. They did have a #5 ranking earlier this year, but by in large, they’ve flown under the radar. The FBW (and NYWC) Tag Team Champions retained the titles when they beat Team Tremendous on 12/18 and then beat The Brother Club at NYWC on 12/19 to retain the NYWC Tag Team Titles to go 2-0 for the week. 2 sets of titles. 2 title defenses. It was pretty close this week, but at the end of the day, the official voters felt that a week where a team defends two sets of titles (one of which was defended vs. a former #1) deserved to be recognized. Congrats to Flawless and Lawless!

#2 Guns & Beer-The FLW Tag Team Champions continued a successful 2015 as they defeated AC/DC at FLW on 12/18 and then beat Submission Squad and Bearded Friends Forever to retain the titles to go 2-0 for the week. This is their second ranking this year and it came at a great time. This is one of the most tough, rugged tag teams on the indies and much like this week’s #1, it’s high time people start recognizing just how good they can be. Will they make the cut of the Tag Team Top 50? Be sure to tune in on 12/29 to find out!

#3 Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson)-As ROH doesn’t count towards our rankings, what the Young Bucks did at 2CW over the weekend was particularly important. Granted, both wins were in 6-man tags, but they are the Young Bucks…and they had some very strong competition. They teamed with AJ Styles at 2CW to defeat Jay Freddie, Pepper Parks & Sean Carr on 12/20 and then teamed with Kenny Omega the same night to defeat AR Fox & To Infinity And Beyond (Cheech & Colin Delaney). The Bucks have reportedly signed contracts with ROH, so their time on the indies may be limited in 2016, but when they’re touring, expect to see them pop up again. They are considered one of the best if not THE best tag teams in the world for a reason.

#4 Brothers of Construction aka Hunter Brothers (Jim & Lee Construction)-The current Kamikaze Pro Tag Team Champions added the Attack! Tag Team Titles to their mantle over the weekend as they teamed with Super Santos Sr at Attack! on 12/18 to defeat Mike Bird & The Anti-Fun Police (Damian Dunne & Ryan Smile) and then defeated Ramses [Replacement for Elephant Mask] & Super Santos Sr. and The Anti-Fun Police (Damian Dunne & Ryan Smile) in a triple threat on 12/20 to win the titles to go 2-0 for the week. They’ve had a VERY good 2015. You can almost guarantee you’ll hear their names pop up in the Tag Team Top 50 on either 12/29 or 12/30. What ranking? Tune in to find out!
#5 Dudes On TV (DJ Z & Matt Cross)-Due to their strength of competition, the official voters actually placed them ahead of the new AIW Tag Team Champions this week. They get in after defeating The Beaver Boys, Façade & Flip Kendrick, and The Nation of Intoxication in a Four Corners Match at AIW on 12/18. What’s your opinion? What should be ranked higher? A HUGE title win or a HUGE win vs. three GREAT teams? Hard to say, but you have to assume “Dudes On TV” will be in line for a title shot some time down the line.
People’s Champs. The Fellowship (Ronnie Ribs @TheRib35 & GA West @thegawest)-The Fellowship wrapped up our 2015 tag team rankings by doing what they’ve done for the last 2 weeks with a THIRD straight People’s Champs award by winning the online voting competition. 171 votes was just the ticket for them this week to win their FIFTH online voting competition of the year. We’d have to really pour through the stats, but unofficially, that is a 2015 record as no one else won as many voting competitions in tags as them. They got on the ballot with yet another victory as they beat Angel Azul & Avila at PWACT on 12/18. This was only their first year teaming. Expect more big things in 2016!

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of December 21st, 2015

#1 Jon Ryan-On the last eligible week of rankings of 2015 for the IPR 100, we get a #1 ranking that is completely out of left field. It wasn’t a clear cut #1 this week, but considering his competition and some of the other facts surrounding his weekend, it was a nice surprise for the UK’s Bad Boy. Ryan defeated Snare in the IPW: UK Hardcore Lottery Tournament on 12/19 and then beat Jimmy Havoc and Zack Sabre Jr. in the Finals the same day to win the tournament. A 2-0 record combined with his HUGE win over Havoc and ZSJ helped him BARELY slide into the #1 spot this week. There are certainly arguments for and against him in the top spot this week, but it was a pretty soft week in terms of independent wrestling for any one person. Regardless, this #1 could very well springboard him into the IPR 100 all because of a great weekend on the last weekend of eligibility. Amazing how things work out sometimes.

#2 Sami Callihan (@TheSamiCallihan)-The other obvious contender for the top spot is a guy who has been absolutely destroying everyone since his return to the indies. What ultimately cost him the #1 ranking this week was his first loss (that we’re aware of) since his return. The last 2CW Heavyweight Champion defeated Dalton Castle on 12/17 to retain the title, then beat Matt Hardy on 12/18 to retain again, then lost a Fatal Four Way for the PWS Title vs. Matt Macintosh on 12/19, and then beat Dalton Castle on 12/20 to retain the 2CW Title again. A 3-1 week is certainly impressive but it wasn’t quite enough to get him his first #1. With 2016 approaching and next week starting a new year of rankings…”The Callihan Death Machine” is looking to continue his dominance.
#3 Christian Rose (@BitterLunatic)-Christian Rose has had a relatively quiet year in singles while also having a solid year in tags (until regaining the DREAMWAVE Title recently). He added more gold to his collection over the weekend as he defeated Estonian Farmer Frog in a #1 Contenders Match at FLW on 12/19 and then beat Macen Mayham for the FLW Outlaw Title the same night. Last year we saw him as a future breakout star and while 2015 may not have quite produced some of the results we expected, there’s still a lot of hope heading into 2016 that he’ll live up to his limitless potential.
#4 Johnny Evers (@JEvers_Official)-We get a Dutch Pro Wrestler in the number four spot this week as the 6’3, 220 pounder made an impact after winning the 2015 Christmas Cup. He is currently the PWH, PWA European Allstar, and PWA Daredevil Champion, but his success over the weekend came in Germany where he won the Cup by defeating Misfit in the First Round and then Francis Kaspin, Maggot, & Dirty Dragan in an Elimination Match in the Finals. The Indy Power Rankings prove once again to be truly international as 2015 has produced rankings from countries literally all over the planet.
#5 Sir John Axel-South Africa makes a splash in this week’s rankings as Sir John Axel gets his first official ranking after a solid week where he won TWO titles. He is the NEW APWA Heavyweight and DPW Heavyweight Champion. He did lose to Kilimanjaro in a Flag Match at APWA in South Africa on 12/16, but bounced back when he cashed in the Money in the Bank to defeat Thierry Middoux the same night to win the APWA Title. He then defeated Horatu and The Assassin at DPW on 12/19 to win a Money in the Bank Match there, and then cashed in the same night to beat Nightmare to win the DPW Title. It was a 3-1 week for a guy who really made himself known from a place that may not be known for wrestling by most fans.
#6 Akira Tozawa (@TozawaAkira)-It’s more of the same from this Dragon Gate star as he gets one last ranking to pad his stats before the 2015 IPR 100 Reveal. The former multiple time #1 and 1/3 of the Dragon Gate Open the Triangle Gate Champions teamed with Shachihoko BOY, Naoki Tanizaki, Ken’ichiro Arai and Masato Yoshino at Dragon Gate on 12/16 to lose to Jimmy Kanda, Naruki Doi, El Lindaman, Karaoke Machine and Super Shisa, then defeated “Hollywood” Stalker Ichikawa twice on 12/18, then defeated Mondai Ryu on 12/19, and then teamed with Masato Yoshino on 12/20 to defeat El Lindaman and Kaito Ishida to go 4-1 for the week. It was just another good week for Tozawa as 2015 may have been his most successful of his entire career. Let’s see what 2016 has in store for this incredible talent.
#7 Masato Tanaka-This is most certainly not the first time we’ve seen Tanaka pop up in the Top 10 this year as he just continues to turn back the clocks of time. It was like the late 1990’s again as he teamed with Tank Nagai, Kengo Mashimo at K-Dojo on 12/15 to defeat Daisuke Sekimoto, Yuji Okabayashi and Taishi Takizawa, then teamed with Atsushi Onita, Hideki Hosaka and Passion Hasegawa at FMW on 12/18 to defeat Raijin Yaguchi, Tomohiko Hashimoto, Buffalo and Yasu Kubota, and then defeated Tosihiko Itakura at Zero1 on 12/19 to go 3-0 for the week. Masato Tanaka continues to cheat time as we head into the IPR 100. Will he make the cut?
#8 Mohammed Yone-In terms of win-loss records, no one really had a better record than Yone as he went 4-0 on the weekend at NOAH, which is impressive in itself. The thing that hurt him was that most of those wins were tags. He teamed with Katsuhiko Nakajima at NOAH on 12/16 to defeat MAYBACH Taniguchi and Quiet Storm, then teamed with Kuishinbo Kamen and Kankuro Hoshino at Toru Owashi Produce on 12/17 to defeat Toru Owashi, Yasu Urano and Shuji Ishikawa, then defeated Quiet Storm at NOAH on 12/19, and then teamed with Akitoshi Saito on 12/20 to defeat Cho Kibou-Gun (MAYBACH Taniguchi and Mitsuhiro Kitamiya) to have a flawless week. We’d like to see him do a little bit more in singles in 2016 and see where that takes him.
#9 Matt Macintosh (@BadApplePro)-The first and only person to beat Sami Callihan since his return to the indies gets his first official ranking this week as we shine light on the PWS Champion. The self-proclaimed “Best Wrestler Alive” went a long way in proving that boast to be true as he beat Kenny Omega, Sami Callihan, and Mario Bokara on 12/19 to retain the title. He was likely the only person that stood in the way of Callihan getting his first #1 ranking this week and/or Kenny Omega contending for the top spot. Macintosh is only one of two people in the official Top 10 with just one win this week, but it was a HUGE one.
#10 Ethan Page (@OfficialEGO)-“All Ego” gets in this week on the strength of his title and his title defense. The AIW Absolute Champion polished off his impressive 2015 when he defeated Tim Donst on 12/18 to retain the title. Page is truly one of the most talented and entertaining wrestlers on the indies right now and we don’t see any reason why his 2016 can’t be even bigger than his 2015. With his focus seemingly 100% on singles now…there may be no stopping Ethan Page as he continues his rise on the indies.
People’s Champ. Gavin Alexander (@humanh8machine)-“The Slaughterville Nightmare’ has been in the business for quite some time throughout the Midwest. This week he really garnered a ton of support as he collected a staggering 540 votes to win the online voting competition for the very first time. He got on the poll with a victory vs. D.O.C. at HHCW on 12/19 and then his fans took care of the rest. You can follow him @human.h8.machine on Instagram.
