Indy Power Rankings for the Week of November 16th, 2015
#1 Akira Tozawa (@TozawaAkira)-Was a 5-0 week at Dragon Gate with three of those wins in tag team competition enough to get Tozawa #1 this week? That part is debatable, but regardless he is now a FOUR time #1 in the Indy Power Rankings this year. What a year for Tozawa so far. The Dragon Gate Open the Owarai Gate Champion teamed with Masato Yoshino at Dragon Gate on 11/9 to defeat Dragon Kid and Shachihoko BOY, then teamed with T-Hawk on 11/11 to defeat Cyber Kong and Mondai Ryu, then defeated “Hollywood” Stalker Ichikawa twice on 11/14 to defend the title twice, then teamed with T-Hawk and Masato Yoshino to defeat Over Generation (CIMA, Eita & Punch Tominaga). It was likely a case of his year being so great combined with 5 wins in one week that got him yet another #1 ranking this week. He is BATTLING for that top spot in the IPR 100 as the year comes to a close.
#2 Santana Garrett (@SantanaGarrett_)-She is always relevant and always a contender for the top spot in 2015. The NWA Women’s Champion (and Battling Bombshells, Shine, OPW, NPW and CWE Women’s Champion) teamed with Hiroyo Matsumoto at the joint Stardom/Sendai Girls show on 11/12 to defeat Ray & Sakura Hirota and then defeated Holidead at Stardom on 11/15 to retain the NWA title to go 2-0 for the week. One tweet and a ton of fan support also helped the former People’s Champ grab the #3 spot in the online voting competition with 36 fan votes. While she misses out on the #1 this week, there have been very few, if any, that have had a better 2015 than Santana Garrett. She is the definition of dominance this year.
#3 Martin Stone (Danny Burch)-Martin Stone has had 3 mentions this year, but this is his first ranking and it’s a great one. It’s a #3 ranking for Martin Stone as he jumps into contention to crack the IPR 100 after a 3-0 week. Working in Florida is paying dividends as the NWA FUW Flash Champion defeated Aaron Solo at NWA FUW on 11/10 to retain the title, then defeated Jeff Boom on 11/13 to retain the title, and then defeated Kennedy Kendrick in a Last Man Standing Match at ACW on 11/14 to go 3-0 for the week. It was a great week for Stone as he was one of the very few contenders for the #1 spot this week.
#4 T-Hawk-Despite no fan votes in the online voting competition, T-Hawk continues to churn out the wins as he defeated Mondai Ryu at Dragon Gate on 11/9, then teamed with Akira Tozawa on 11/10 to defeat VerserK (Cyber Kong and Mondai Ryu) then teamed with Masato Yoshino on 11/14 to defeat Jimmyz (Jimmy Susumu and Jimmy Kanda) and then teamed with Akira Tozawa & T-Hawk on 11/15 to defeat Over Generation (CIMA, Eita & Punch Tominaga) to go 4-0 for the week. With 15 wins in his last 18 matches, he is proving to be a force to be reckoned with as 2015 comes to a close.
#5 Andrew Palace (@TheAndrewPalace)-Andrew Palace actually got quite a bit of support for the #1 spot this week despite only getting a #5 ranking (not that a #5 ranking is a bad thing AT ALL). The Pittsburgh, PA native First he defeated Gory on 11/14 at VOW in a 15 Minute Iron Man Match in the semi-finals of the VOW Iron Man Tournament and then beat Façade, Brute VanSlyke, Jimmy Nutts, and Jack Pollock in a 5-man 30 Minute Iron Man Match in the Finals to win the tournament to go 2-0 for the week. Palace has had 2 mentions before this week, but this is his first ranking in 2015, so props to him!
#6 Masato Shibata-We’ve got another first-timer to the Indy Power Rankings Top 10 in Masato Shibata this week at #6. The NEW Shinjuku 2-Chrome Pro Champion teamed with Kotaro Nasu, Akkun Ohashi and Takayuki Ueki at 666 on 11/9 to beat four other four-man teams, then defeated Hercules Serenga in the semifinals of the Shinjuku 2-Chome Pro Title Tournament, and then defeated Shinobu at 666 on 9/10 to win the tournament and the title to go 3-0 for the week. It’s a well-deserved ranking for Shibata along with the very first IPR mention.
#7 Matt Cage (@proudcaucasian)-Here’s a name we’ve seen sporadically this year, although not as frequently as in 2013 or 2014, BUT make no mistake, he’s still having a very impressive year. He has been mentioned 7 times along with a #8 ranking earlier this year, but surprisingly this is his highest ranking in 2015. ½ of the DREAMWAVE Tag Team Champions swept the weekend as he defeated Trik Davis at SLA on 11/13 and then defeated Danny Adams at SLA on 11/14 to go 2-0 for the week. With Matt Cage really starting to get out there in a slew of various promotions, expect him to bounce back with an even stronger 2016.
#8 Tracy Smothers-The Wild-Eyed Southern Boy gets his first Top 10 ranking in the IPR as he won the Buddy Landell Memorial Cup on 11/14. He beat Lou Marconi in the first round, had a bye in the second round, and then beat Damien Wayne in the final to win the tournament. Interestingly, although the bye likely helped his chances of winning the tournament, it’s that very bye that likely kept him from an even higher ranking this week if he had gone 3-0. As it stands, his ranking keeps him from committing “mass homicide” on the official voters as you know…that’s what Tracy’s known for. Congrats to Smothers who just keeps ignoring father time!
#9 Christian Rose (@BitterLunatic)-The other half of the DREAMWAVE Tag Team Champions teamed with Jeremy Wyatt at SLA on 11/13 to defeat Roscoe Eat Lisa (Mikey McFinnegan & Zakk Sawyers) and then defeated Jojo Bravo on 11/14 to go 2-0 for the week. Shockingly, this is Christian Rose’s first mention OR ranking in 2015. He had a good 2013 and an even better 2014, but he hasn’t been having the HUGE success that he was last year in singles just yet. He’s got all the talent. Can he put it all back together as he we head into 2016?
#10 Kazuchika Okada (@rainmaker_chaos)-This one may confuse some people. Keep in mind what Okada has done at New Japan is not eligible for any kind of rankings in the Indy Power Rankings. What does count is his work outside of New Japan, ROH, and TNA. Over the weekend the IWGP Heavyweight Champion defeated Genichiro Tenryu in his Retirement Match at Tenryu Project on 11/15. With his title, his prestige, and the importance of the match he competed in, he found a way into the Top 10 this week despite only one eligible victory.
Honorable Mention. Yoshihiro Tajiri-“The Japanese Buzzsaw” teamed with Tommy Dreamer at HoH on 11/13 to defeat Eric Young and EC3 and then defeated Chris Hero on 11/14 to go 2-0 for the week. He JUST missed out on the Top 10 this week despite quite a bit of support from the official voters on a crazy week of independent wrestling.
People’s Champ. Lightning Bolt Johnson-It’s the THIRD People’s Champ award in Singles for one of the Midwest’s most popular competitors. LBJ is the NEW MAW No Limits Champion as he fought JD Smooth to a draw on 11/14 and then beat him a rematch later in the show to win the title. He collected a massive amount of votes in the online voting competition with 361 votes to win the fan vote by well over 250 votes. He has insane popularity for a guy who just continues to strive for improvement and notoriety.
Others missing out/receiving votes:
John Wayne Murdoch
David Baker-#2 in the online voting competition with 103 votes
Rude Boy Riley
Dr. Leonardo Darwin
