Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of October 12th, 2015
#1 The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter @BeardedBullys)-We’ve mentioned these Hooligans so many times over the last 2 years that it’s almost impossible to find words to describe what they’re doing right now. 2014 was an amazing year for them capped off with a #1 ranking in the year-end Tag Team Top 50. 2015 may have surpassed 2014 in terms of rate of success up to this point. These bearded bullies now hold SIX Tag Team Titles as they are the FIP, UPW, Zero-1 USA, RAPW, AAW, and NEW Outlaw Wrestling Tag Team Champions. Six Titles=yet another #1 ranking. Their weekend was a clean sweep as they defeated Davey Vega & Mat Fitchet at AAW on 10/9 to retain the AAW Tag Team Titles, then beat Black Inc at RAPW on 10/10 to retain the RAPW Tag Team Titles, and then won the titles that many thought would be theirs from day one…the Outlaw Wrestling Tag Team Titles when they beat The Goon Squad and The Tryout Show Rejects in a 3 Way on 10/11 to win the titles. A 3-0 week gets them just that much closer to #1 in THIS year’s Tag Team Top 50. Just a few months to go until the release of this year’s Tag Team Top 50. Let’s see how it plays out.
#2 The Heatseekers (Sigmon & Elliott Russell)-The only other team that was a viable contender to the #1 spot among the official voters this week was The Heatseekers who won the still (at least somewhat) prestigious NWA Tag Team Titles in a 3 Way Match vs. The Illuminati and The Killer Elite Squad at NWA Smoky Mountain on 10/10. They are also the current NWA Tennessee Tag Team Champions proving that they’re not just a regional act. This tag team has been repeatedly snubbed from the top 5 this year, but they come on strong with their HUGE title win over the weekend and we expect to see much more of them in the upcoming weeks and months.
#3 Strong BJ/BJ Strong (Daisuke Sekimoto & Yuji Okabayashi)-This tag team racked up FOUR victories at Big Japan last week and on a busy week like this, those four wins earn them a #3 ranking. The former #1’s continued their success in 2015 as they defeated Hideyoshi Kamitani & Yuko Miyamoto at BJW on 10/6, then defeated Hideyoshi Kamitani & Yoshihisa Uto on 10/7, then defeated Twin Towers (Kohei Sato and Shuji Ishikawa) on 10/10, and then defeated Hideki Suzuki and Yoshihisa Uto on 10/11 to go 4-0 for the week. While they don’t have the collection of titles The Hooligans have or the tremendous victory (with international importance) that The Heatseekers add…the amount of wins meant enough to make them only one of three teams with an official vote at #1 this week.
#4 Polo Promotions (Jackie Polo & Mark Coffey)-The UK represented well again this week as the ICW Tag Team Champions defeated The Black Label (Drew Galloway & Jack Jester) on 10/8 at ICW to retain the titles and then defeated Noam Dar & Kenny Williams on 10/9 to retain again to go 2-0 for the week. Perhaps more impressive than the 2-0 weekend and the strength of their opponents is the fact that they have won 16 straight matches as a team. While they haven’t been racking up a ton of rankings this year, it’s worth mentioning that they are one of the truly underrated teams on the indies right now.
#5 Los Ice Creams (El Hijo del Ice Cream & Ice Cream Jr.)-This duo is on a great run right now as they get their first ranking after they teamed with Princess Kimber Lee at Chikara on 10/9 to defeat The Gentleman’s Club (Chuck Taylor, Drew Gulak & The Swamp Monster) at Chikara on 10/9 and then defeated Arcane Horde (Kodama & Obariyon) on 10/10 to go 2-0 for the week. In the past their win-loss record has been less than impressive, but now they’ve been turning up the heat on their competition as they continue to impress with 4 straight wins. Can they continue that type of success and find their way into the Tag Team Top 5 more frequently? Stay tuned…
People’s Champs. Team 420 (Hellcat @hellcat420 & Chip Stetson)-The NEW IYFW Tag Team Champions defeated Scumdogs of Sanity on 10/10 to win the titles and then followed that up by collecting a FANTASTIC amount of support as they won the online voting competition with 253 votes. Hellcat, in particular, has been tearing it up every time he gets on the poll and this week was no different. If they can continue to win and get on the poll, an official ranking may not be far off for this duo.
