Indy Power Rankings for the Week of October 5th, 2015

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of October 5th, 2015

#1 AJ Styles (@AJStylesOrg)-Vegas has officially set the over/under at 12 for amount of times we’re going to get “New Japan is not an independent promotion” from fans who don’t bother to read this write-up. That being said, as most of you know, the reason you don’t see AJ Styles in the Top 10 very often is because he mostly works New Japan and ROH…two companies that we don’t consider “indies”. Some may agree with that assessment and some may disagree, but that’s our criteria and we move forward under those rules. Over the weekend we had to debate whether the joint shows at Revolution Pro in the UK would count towards our rankings. The end result was that “yes” they would. AJ was on fire over the weekend as he took his RPW British Heavyweight title and defeated Marty Scurll and Will Ospreay on 10/2 to retain the title, then defeated Jushin Thunder Liger on 10/3 at RPW to retain the title, and then defeated Tommy End at wXw in Germany on 10/4 to go 3-0 for the week. It was an insanely good weekend and surprising the first ranking for “The Phenomenal One.”

#2 Fred Yehi-It’s a fantastic first ranking for a guy who had one fantastic weekend. He beat some of the best the South had to offer as Yehi became the NEW AIWF America’s Champion when he won the AIWF Tournament to win the Title as he beat Sugar Dunkerton in the first round, AJ Steele in the second round, Francisco Ciasto in the semifinals and then defeated Chip Day in the finals. The next day he beat Blake Bailey at TWE Chattanooga to retain the title to go 5-0 for the week. He was JUST short of becoming #1 this week with the only argument against him at #1 being that some of the guys he beat aren’t super well known across the world. Again though, it was a GREAT week for Yehi as he earned his spot this week.

#3 Shinsuke Nakamura (@ShinsukeN)-Name value can mean a lot in the Indy Power Rankings as it’s the third criteria we use to rank wrestlers on a weekly basis. Nakamura usually doesn’t get out on the indies much, but this week the IWGP Intercontinental Champion traveled to the UK where he beat Big Damo at RPW on 10/2 and then beat Marty Scurll on 10/3 to go 2-0 for the week. His work outside of ROH and New Japan (when it happens) has been stellar as he has ranked up 7 straight wins outside those big companies.

#4 Santana Garrett (@SantanaGarrett_)-In terms of quality of competition, it really was one of Santana Garrett’s truly excellent weeks. The Shine and NWA Women’s Champion (and PRW, Battling Bombshells, OPW, NPW and CWE Women’s Champion) defeated Evie at Shine on 10/2 to retain the title and then defeated Saraya Knight at I Believe in Wrestling on 10/3 to retain both the NWA and Shine titles to go 2-0 for the week. Santana just continues to rack up win after win as she has won 43 of her last 44 matches outside of GFW (with 43 being wins and just one draw). She truly is dominating the Indy Power Rankings this year.

#5 Bambi Hall (@BambiHall)-Due to the amount of wins she racked up in a single week, Bambi Hall got a LOT of support at the #1 spot, but there were other voters who felt that her long list of tag team victories weren’t as impressive as some of the singles wins that others on the ballot had. Her weekend was crazy: She defeated Sahara Se7en at CWE on 9/28; then teamed with Jacob Creed & Kat Von Heez the same night to defeat Bobby Collins, Aja Perera, & Sahara Se7en; then defeated Sahara Se7en and Ashley Frost in a three-way dance on 9/29; then teamed with Kat Von Heez the same day to beat Aja Perera & Sahara Se7en; then defeated Aja Perera on 9/30; then teamed with Ashley Frost the same day to beat Aja Perera & Sahara Se7en; then defeated Aja Perera on 10/1; then teamed with Ashley Frost the same night to beat Aja Perera & Sahara Se7en; then lost to Kat von Heez on 10/2; then teamed with Kat von Heez the same night to beat The Cannon Clan (Bobby Collins & Kevin Cannon); then defeated Aja Perera on 10/3; then teamed with Ashley Frost to beat Aja Perera & Sahara Se7en to go 11-1 for the week.

#6 James Anthony (@87JamesAnthony)-He’s doing his best to catch up to Santana Garrett and her impressive collection of titles as James Anthony added to his trophy case by winning the MSWA Junior Title when he beat Thomas Gage at MSWA on 10/3 and then beat Matt Gilbert & Tristen Ramsey in a 3-Way the same night to win the title to go 2-0 for the week. With wins in 6 of his last 8 matches…and 4 titles around his waist, James Anthony is absolutely on fire right now as he looks to get back into the IPR 100 this year. #2 in the online voting competition with 121 votes.

#7 BT Gunn-It’s the first singles ranking this year for BT Gunn as he (like everyone else in the Top 10 of course) had a very impressive weekend. It was BT Gunn’s chance to shine this week as /2 of BCW Tag Team Champions entered the RNW King of the North Tournament on 10/3 and defeated Saqib Ali in the quarterfinals, then defeated TJ Rage in the semifinals, and then defeated Kid Fite in the final to win the tournament to go 3-0 for the week. As per the norm, tournaments hold a good amount of weight amongst the voters and that showed here once again.

#8 Rey Mysterio Jr. (@reymysterio)-It’s possible that he didn’t deserve inclusion this week as his loss came in late to the ballot, BUT his big win was so HUGE that it was impossible to ignore in the grand scheme of things. Rey Mysterio is the NEW Destiny Heavyweight Champion as he teamed with El Patron Alberto & Rey Horus at The Crash on 10/2 to defeat Daga, El Hijo del Fantasma & Extreme Tiger, then defeated PJ Black & Ricochet at Destiny on 10/3 to win the title, and then teamed with Garza Jr. & Psycho Clown to lose to El Hijo del Fantasma, El Texano Jr. & Myzteziz and go 2-1 for the week. The title win was something special considering who he beat and of course, here he is in the Top 10 again.

#9 Ultimo Guerrero (@UltGuerrero)-It was a very good week for Ultimo Guerrero as he slips into the Top 10 this week with a 4-1 record. On 10/2 at CMLL in Mexico he was eliminated in a tournament seeding battle royal, then defeated Rey Bucanero in the first round, then defeated Bárbaro Cavernario in the quarterfinal, then defeated Shocker in the semifinal, and then defeated Pagano and Tony Cisneros in a triple threat at Chilanga Mask on 10/4. If it wasn’t for the one loss in a battle royal of all things, he likely would have been a top contender this week for #1. Let’s see what other success comes in 2015 for Ultimo Guerrero.

#10 Marcellus King (@MARCELLUSKING1)-Very few competitors are on the type of hot streak that Marcellus King is on right now. The CWF Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion (and FSP Champion) defeated Lance Lude on 10/3 to retain the title. He is the only person with only one victory to crack the Top 10 this week but it’s his overall body of work that helped sneak him into the Top 10 this week once again as he just continues to mow down the competition in the Carolinas.

1st Honorable Mention. Kyle O’Reilly-1/2 of IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions; defeated Kushida at RPW on 10/2; then teamed with Bobby Fish at wXw in Germany on 10/3 to defeat ACH & Tommaso Ciampa in the first round; then they defeated Sumerian Death Squad (Michael Dante & Tommy End) in the second round; then defeated Hot And Spicy (Axel Dieter Jr. & Da Mack) in the semifinals on 10/4 before losing to Big Daddy Walter & Zack Sabre Jr in the final to go 4-1 for the week; has won 9 of his last 13 matches outside of NJPW and ROH.

People’s Champ. 2nd Honorable Mention. Mitch Johnson (@JohnsonEra)-With 159 votes collected, ½ of the HPW Intergender Tag Team Champions won the online voting competition this week. He got there by his success on 10/3 at NWA-CCW defeated The Mad Hatter in the first round; then defeated Jacob Mercury in the semifinals; then beat Evan Morris in the final to win the Lord of the Ring tournament and go 3-0 for the week. He is both the People’s Champ and 2nd Honorable Mention this week, JUST missing out on the official Top 10 after an amazing week.

3rd Honorable Mention. Akira Tozawa-The Dragon Gate Open the Brave Gate and Open the Owarai Gate; teamed with Syachihoko BOY & T-Hawk at Dragon Gate on 9/29 to defeat Dia.HEARTS (Big R Shimizu, BxB Hulk & Kzy); then defeated Takehiro Yamamura on 10/3; then teamed with Masato Yoshino & T-Hawk on 10/4 to defeat Dia.HEARTS (BxB Hulk, Masaaki Mochizuki and Kzy) to go 3-0 for the week.

4th Honorable Mention. La Flamita-This Dragon Gate talent defeated Takehiro Yamamura at Dragon Gate on 9/28; then teamed with Drastik Boy on 9/29 to defeat Shingo Takagi and Punch Tominaga; then teamed with CIMA on 10/3 to defeat Dia.HEARTS (BxB Hulk and Kzy); then teamed with Dragon Kid & Big R Shimizu on 10/4 to defeat Jimmy Kanda, Mr. Quu Quu Naoki Tanizaki Toyonaka Dolphin and Drastik Boy to go 4-0 for the week.
