Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of June 22nd, 2015

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of June 22nd, 2015

#1 Ultimo Dragon & Yoshinobu Kanemaru-Well, who would have thought in 2015 we’d be featuring Ultimo Dragon at the top of any of our rankings? It was a strange week in both singles and tags, as there was certainly quite a bit of nostalgia, BUT Ultimo Dragon & Yoshinobu Kanemaru certainly deserved the #1 spot this week after being the only team with a 4-0 week. The All Asia Tag Team Champions defeated SUSHI & Yohei Nakajima on AJPW on 6/15, then defeated Hikaru Sato & Yuma Aoyagi at AJPW on 6/17, then teamed with The Bodyguard on 6/19 to defeat Jake Lee, Jun Akiyama & SUSHI, and then defeated SUSHI and Yohei Nakajima on 6/21 to wrap up the week. Congrats to them on their first #1 ranking heading into the Tag Team Top 50 Mid-Year Update on July 1st!

#2 Killer Elite Squad (Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr.)-The former #1’s and current NWA/GHC Tag Team Champions return to the Top 5 this week after a very good week. The closest competition for this week’s #1 ranking teamed with Taichi and Shelton Benjamin at NOAH on 6/15 to defeat TMDK (Mikey Nicholls & Shane Haste, Chris Hero & Jack Gamble) and then defeated Chris Hero & Colt Cabana on 6/19 to retain the GHC Tag Team Titles. After a FANTASTIC 2014, 2015 appears to be even better. Where will they rank next week for the Mid-Year update? Tune in to find out!

#3 Hunter Brothers (Jim & Lee Hunter @JimNLeeHunter)-The LCW and Kamikaze Pro Tag Team Champions were also viable contenders for the top spot this week after they defeated The London Riots (James Davis & Rob Lynch), The GZRS (Sebastian & Tom Irvin) & The Regression (Paul Robinson & “The Omega” Isaac Zercher) in a four-way #1 contenders tag team match at Progress Wrestling on 6/21 and then defeated Mika & Elliott Jordan, The YOLO Squad (Drew Parker & Ethan Silver) & Omari & Liam Doyle at Kamikaze Pro the same day to retain the titles and go 2-0 for the week. The UK has produced some top tag teams over the last couple of years and the Hunter Brothers are a product of that.

#4 Monster Express (Akira Tozawa & Masato Yoshino)-This Dragon Gate factions in all sorts of different forms continues to pop up in the Tag Team Top 5 as they continue their push for various spots in the Tag Team Top 50. This past week they defeated Millenials (T-Hawk and Yosuke (loves) Santa Maria) at Dragon Gate on 6/15, then teamed with Shingo Takagi on 6/16 to defeat MAD BLANKEY (YAMATO, Naruki Doi and Punch Tominaga) and then teamed with Shingo Takagi on 6/21 to defeat Millenials (T-Hawk, Eita and Kotoka) to go 3-0 for the week. While they had a strong case #1 spot this week, they didn’t receive any #1 votes from any of the official voters and only one vote from the fans.

#5 Team IOU (@TeamIOU Kerry Awful & Nick Iggy)-Last year’s surprise tag team continue to try to get back to where they were last year as they went 2-0 over the weekend with a couple of big wins. “Death” was the theme of the weekend as the PGP Tag Team Champions teamed to defeat the Death Dealers on 6/19 and then defeated The Death Machines (Stephen King & Nate Redwing) on 6/20 to retain the titles. IOU may not be in quite as many high profile matches as they were in 2014, but they’re doing their best to continue to put on better quality matches and not just quantity on a weekly basis.

People’s Champs. Seth Tylors & Nick Skitz-It was a slow week in the tag team voting competition but QWA brought some strong representation this week as Tylors & Skitz won the online voting competition by a very narrow margin. Their win vs. The Choff & Karlos Aries at QWA in Australia on 6/21 got them on the poll and their fans took care of the rest.

The IPR 100 Mid-Year Update is coming! Tune in on Tuesday, June 30th to find out where your favorite talent ranks this year so far! http://www.blogtalkradio.com/fillingthevoidrn/2015/06/30/indy-power-rankings-2015-ipr-100-mid-year-update

2014 IPR 100

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of June 22nd, 2015

JimmyRave6-22

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of June 22nd, 2015

#1 Jimmy Rave (@TheJimmyRave)-THE biggest shock of the year comes to us from Georgia this past weekend as Jimmy Rave bursts back into the public eye after he competed at AWE’s Georgia Wrestling Crown Tournament on 6/18. In the first round he defeated Kyle Matthews & Sugar D, then beat Raphael King in the semi-finals, and then beat Chip Day in the finals to win the tournament. A 3-0 week and a victory in a tournament gets Jimmy Rave his first official ranking which just so happens to be a #1. With him picking up GFW dates going forward, can he build on this ranking or will it be a short stop on the indies?

#2 Johnny Gargano (@JohnnyGargano)-“The Whole Shebang” and the current Smash Champion returns to the Top 10 after he defeated DJ Z at AAW on 6/19 and then defeated Tommaso Ciampa at ESW on 6/20 in an indy dream match. A 2-0 week (outside of NXT) gets Gargano another ranking as he’s enjoying a very prosperous year thus far. Over the last 3 years since the inception of the Indy Power Rankings, Gargano has been the most consistent wrestler of anyone who has been ranked in the Top 10. Can he keep it going or will the WWE come calling? We can only hope for the best for one of the best in the world.

#3 Louis Lyndon (@LouisLyndon31)-It’s been a while since we’ve seen Lyndon in the Top 10, but this weekend was special for the high flyer. He is the NEW AAW Heritage Champion after defeating Christian Faith for the title on 6/19. He followed that up with a big win over Kunai the Silent Warrior at PGP on 6/20 to go 2-0 for the week. With wins in 7 of his last 9 matches, Lyndon is on a bit of a roll and looks to continue that success going forward. He’d been lost in the shuffle over the last year and a half or so, but perhaps now is the time when he shines bright on the indies once again.

#4 Johnny Evers-Once again the Indy Power Rankings is TRULY International as Johnny Evers competed in the Catch Cup at PWAS in Belgium on 6/20 where he defeated Dragan Spazic in the first round, then beat Kid Lux in the semi-finals and then beat Gabriel Angelfyre to win the Catch Cup to go 3-0 for the week. Impressive weekend as Evers grabs his first ranking in the Top 10. Much of the international talent like this has been one and done in the past. Can Evers change that trend?

#5 Soner Durson-We get another first-timer to the Indy Power Rankings Top 10 as Durson competed in and won the Lotto Thunder Tournament over the weekend at FSW in the UK on 6/21. He defeated Dave Rayn in the First Round, then beat Jack Gallagher in the semi-finals, and then beat Rampage Brown in the finals to win the tournament to go 3-0 for the week. Durson makes his first appearance after beating some stiff competition. It’s never an easy task to compete in the UK and be consistent. Durson will have his work cut out for him to continue to make a splash in 2015.

#6 Ultimo Dragon-Once again Ultimo Dragon makes an appearance in the Top 10. The NWA International Junior Heavyweight Champion and 1/2 of All Asia Tag Team Champions teamed with Yoshinobu Kanemaru at AJPW on 6/15 to defeat SUSHI & Yohei Nakajima, then teamed with Yoshinobu Kanemaru on 6/17 to defeat Hikaru Sato & Yuma Aoyagi, then defeated Yohei Nakajima on 6/18, then teamed with The Bodyguard & Yoshinobu Kanemaru on 6/19 to defeat Jake Lee, Jun Akiyama & SUSHI, and then teamed with Yoshinobu Kanemaru on 6/21 to defeat SUSHI & Yohei Nakajima to go 5-0 for the week. Even at his age, Ultimo Dragon is absolutely KILLING IT in 2015. Hard to believe, but absolutely true.

#7 Masaaki Mochizuki-Dragon Gate once again gets another member of their roster in the Top 10 this week as Mochizuki went 5-0 on the week. He teamed with Kzy on 6/15 at Dragon Gate to defeat Jimmy Kanda and Gamma, then defeated Yosuke (loves) Santa Maria on 6/16, then teamed with Dragon Kid on 6/20 to defeat Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!! and Jimmy Susumu, then defeated Mondai Ryu on 6/21, and then defeated Punch Tominaga the same day. If he can keep this type of success going, he’s going to be a strong contender for a high spot in the 2015 IPR 100.

#8 Akira Tozawa (@TozawaAkira)-Perhaps the most dominant Japanese talent to appear in the Top 10 in 2015 returns again this week as the Dragon Gate Open the Brave Gate and Open the Owarai Gate Champion teamed with Masato Yoshino at Dragon Gate on 6/15 to defeat T-Hawk and Yosuke (loves) Santa Maria, then teamed with Masato Yoshino and Shingo Takagi to defeat YAMATO, Naruki Doi and Punch Tominaga on 6/16, then defeated Jimmy Kanda on 6/20, and then teamed with Masato Yoshino and Shingo Takagi on 6/21 to defeat Millenials (T-Hawk, Eita and Kotoka) to go 4-0 for the week. Tozawa has just been UNSTOPPABLE in 2015, but can he claim the top spot in the 2015 IPR 100?

#9 Zack Sabre Jr. (@zacksabrejr)-This technical wizard returns to the Top 10 again after a 3-0 week in the UK and Japan. He teamed with Daisuke Harada & Yoshinari Ogawa at NOAH on 6/15 to defeat BRAVE (Atsushi Kotoge & Taiji Ishimori) & Hitoshi Kumano, then teamed with Quiet Storm on 6/19 to defeat Genba Hirayanagi & Hitoshi Kumano at NOAH, and then defeated William Eaver at PROGRESS. Sabre has been amazing in 2015, but the one thing that may be holding him back is a major singles title. If he can pick one up in the near future, there’s no doubt he’ll continue to be showcased in the Top 10.

#10 Santana Garrett (@SantanaGarrett_)-The most dominant female wrestler in the U.S. (and perhaps most dominant wrestler, period) once again gets ranked this week after she defeated MJ Knight at OPW on 6/16 to run her win streak to around 19 straight matches. This multiple champion has been almost unbeatable this year and she looks to continue that success heading into next week’s IPR 100 Mid-Year Update. Tune in to find out where Santana ranks! http://www.blogtalkradio.com/fillingthevoidrn/2015/06/30/indy-power-rankings-2015-ipr-100-mid-year-update

People’s Champ. Joey Ryan (@JoeyRyanOnline)-There was a bit of controversy again in the online voting competition as when the competition ended at 10 PM EST, Joey Ryan had the lead. He IS this week’s People’s Champ, but if you check the poll you will see that Alex Titan collected more votes after the cut off. Regardless both men really did a hell of a job of getting votes from Australia this week. Hopefully we see more battles like this in the online poll in the future!

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of June 15th, 2015

MadBlankey6-15

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of June 15th, 2015

#1 Mad Blankey (YAMATO & Naruki Doi)-Much like the official singles voting, this was a clean sweep this week. The NEW Dragon Gate Open the Twin Gate Champions went back-to-back in the #1 spot after winning the gold. Call us psychic, but their #1 ranking last week must have been some kind of foreshadowing for their HUGE win and subsequent repeat number one ranking. They defeated Jimmyz (Genki Horiguchi HAGeeMee & Jimmy Susumu) at Dragon Gate on 6/11 and then defeated Monster Express (Masato Yoshino & Syachihoko BOY) on 6/13 to win the titles. Dragon Gate just continues to churn out fantastic tag teams in the Tag Team Top 5.

#2 Devastation Corporation (Blaster McMassive & Max Smashmaster @DevastationCorp)-The #24 team in last year’s Tag Team Top 50 re-join the fray as they defeated Ophidian & Argus at CHIKARA on 6/13 and then teamed with JAKA to defeat The Nightmare Warriors (Blind Rage, Frightmare, & Silver Ant) to go 2-0 for the week. Perhaps their heel reputation hurt them this week as they garnered zero votes in the online voting competition, but they were basically #2 across the board for the official voters, so here they are. Every time CHIKARA runs a show, they find a way to stay relevant and important in our rankings.

#3 Bravado Brothers (Harlem & Lancelot Bravado)-They’ve been somewhat conspicuous by their absence of late, but they’ve pushed to the front of the pack this week by finally winning the PWX Tag Team Titles. Not only did they win the titles, they beat a pretty dominant team in the form of Country Jacked to win the titles. This team has gone from a joke several years ago to one of the top tag teams on the independent wrestling scene. If they continue to build on this impressive win and ranking, there’s no doubt that they’ll end the year high in the Tag Team Top 50 once again.

#4 The N Words (Acid Jaz & Bryce Benjamin)-The Freelance Tag Team Champions make their first venture into the Tag Team Top 5 this week after a tremendous victory over the weekend to retain the titles. Odds were against them as they entered a STACKED Four-Way Tag Team Match on 6/12 vs. Scumbag Nation, The Tryout Show Rejects, and Team IOU…but they came out on top. This tag team has flown under the radar a bit this year, but after a victory like that, they’re really starting to gain some momentum. Hopefully some other promotions in the Midwest start to take notice and they continue to pile up victories.

#5 Ultimo Dragon & Yoshinobu Kanemaru-The All Asia Tag Team Champions pop in the Tag Team Top 5 again as they defeated Soma Takao & SUSHI at All Japan on 6/12 and then defeated Hikaru Sato & Naoya Nomura on 6/14 to go 2-0 for the week. With wins in 8 of their last 10 matches, this tag team has been tearing it up as they split time between singles and tags in Japan. The Tag Team Top 5 is once again book ended by Japanese talent this week as Japan seems to be one of the true hubs for tag team wrestling in 2015 on the indies.

People’s Champs. Detroit vs. Everybody-This tag team came out of NOWHERE to win the online voting competition this week after they collected a massive amount of votes to edge out The Fellowship for the People’s Champs award. With 313 votes, this tag team proves that they have a strong fan following as they really look to establish themselves as a top tag team.

IMG_2012-0

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of June 15th, 2015

#1 Matt Tremont (@TremontCZW)-For the second straight year, CZW’s Tournament of Death produced a #1 ranking. Last year it was Jun Kasai and this year it was Matt Tremont. It was a straight sweep of #1’s in the ballots of the official voters as Tremont, who was #1 once in 2013, returns to notoriety as he grabs the Grand Slam Championship of Death Matches as he has now won IWA East Coast’s Masters of Pain. IWA Mid-South’s King of the Death Matches, IWA Deep South’s Carnage Cup, and CZW’s Tournament of Death. With victories over Josh Crane, Danny Havoc, and Conor Claxton, “The Bulldozer” earned his stripes yet again. The true “King of the Death Matches” right now reigns supreme once again this week. Next up: a chance to become back to back King of the Death Matches at IWA Mid-South. If anyone can do it, Tremont can…and PERHAPS, the fans will finally get Gage-Tremont. One can hope.

#2 Santana Garrett (@SantanaGarrett_)-Last week’s #1 and STRONG contender to #1 in the IPR 100 falls just one spot this week. Her drop was really no fault of her own as she had yet another dominant weekend with a record of 3-0. The Tournament of Death Winner just slightly edged her out this week, but with that being said, Santana is still THE top female on the indies in terms of our rankings right now. The NWA World Women’s Champion (along with other titles) defeated Shaniah on 6/9 at OPW to retain the title and then defeated Mandy Leon at Queens of Combat on 6/13 and then beat Su Yung at Queens of Combat on 6/14. With 18 straight victories and an INSANE winning percentage in 2015, she just continues to cruise with yet another ranking.

#3 Tessa Blanchard (@TeamTBlanchard)-A familiar face pops up once again in the Indy Power Rankings as Tessa Blanchard dominated her home turf over the weekend. The APWA World Ladies Champion (and EWA Florida Heavyweight Champion) defeated Hania the Howling Huntress at Queens of Combat on 6/13, then defeated LuFisto at Queens of Combat on 6/14, and then wrapped up the weekend by defeating Crazy Mary Dobson at PWX on 6/14 as well. Fantastic 3-0 weekend for the daughter of Tully Blanchard. If last year was any indication, this won’t be the last we see of Tessa Blanchard in 2015.

#4 Zack Sabre Jr. (@zacksabrejr)-One of the most technically sound wrestlers on the face of the Earth makes his return to the Indy Power Rankings Top 10 this week after having a flawless 4-0 week in Japan. The only thing that kept him from an even higher ranking is the fact that most of his victories were tag team matches. He teamed with Gedo at We are Suzuki Gun on 6/9 to defeat Captain New Japan & Captain NOAH, then defeated Jon Webb at NOAH on 6/11, then teamed with Captain NOAH and Shiro Tomoyose on 6/13 to defeat Jon Webb, Jack Gamble & Sakigake, and then teamed with Quiet Storm on 6/14 at NOAH to defeat High Level Enterprise (Jack Gamble & Jon Webb) to wrap up the week. Sabre is one of the best in the world for a reason, so as always, you can expect to see him keep popping as the year rolls on.

#5 Dylan Bostic (@Dylan_Bostic)-Not sure if it can be considered an upset or not, but Dylan Bostic shined in singles over the weekend after receiving mostly tag team recognition in 2014. Bostic became the new IWC Champion after winning this year’s Super Indy Tournament on 6/13. He defeated Super Hentai in the first round, Andrew Palace in the second round, and Raymond Rowe & Alex Daniels in a Triple Threat in the Finals to win the tournament and the title. With a 3-0 record, he’s enjoying his many successes right now. He’ll look to continue that success going forward as he is ever the opportunist.

#6 AJ Styles (@AJStylesOrg)-AJ Styles just continues to do great things on the indies despite all of his commitments to New Japan and ROH. This past week he added another title to his collection as he won the RPW British Heavyweight title from Marty Scurll on 6/14. He is undefeated in his last 15 matches outside of ROH and New Japan with 13 wins and 2 draws. Styles would be getting ranked even higher, but as stated previously multiple times, we no longer consider ROH or New Japan to be independent wrestling companies. That being said, AJ is still the man wherever he goes.

#7 Jun Akiyama-A 4-0 weekend gets one of All Japan’s finest a spot in the Top 10 this week. First, he defeated Sushi at AJPW on 6/10, then teamed with Takao Omori on 6/12 to defeat Akebono & Taiyo Kea, then teamed with Taiyo Kea to defeat Go Shiozaki & Kotaro Suzuki on 6/13, and then finished off the week when he teamed with Sushi on 6/14 to defeat Jake Lee & Taiyo Kea. Much like Zack Sabre Jr, had he had more success in singles as opposed to tags, he likely would have been ranked higher this week.

#8 Chet Sterling (@Chet_Sterling)-Much like Cauliflower Chase Brown last week, this ranking for Chet Sterling is long overdue as the CWF Television Champion (and ½ of the CWF Tag Team Champions) finally cracks the Top 10 this week. His ranking comes on the heels of his victory over Darius Lockhart & Ethan Case in a Triple Threat Match at CWF on 6/13 to retain the title. Sterling, with wins in 9 of his last 10 matches, just continues to shine in North Carolina. Here’s hoping we get to see him tour the U.S. sooner rather than later.

#9 El Ligero (@Ligero1)-The GPW British Champion, PBW Heavyweight Champion and SWE Speed King Champion defeated James Davis on 6/10 at Progress, then defeated Damon Moser on 6/11 at Progress, then defeated Mark Coffey at Tidal Wrestling on 6/14. His lone loss came at the hands of EBW Catch Champion Sam Goodison on 6/12. His run right now is absolutely epic in the UK and Europe, in general. We talked to Jigsaw last week about how good he really is and this is a call to U.S. promoters…bring him in!

#10 John Skyler (@TheJohnSkyler)-The former #1 in the Indy Power Rankings and current PWX Heavyweight Champion (and WrestleForce Champion) returns to the Top 10 this week after proving that he is THE man in PWX right now after defeating Cedric Alexander to retain the title on 6/14. This comes before his trip to China where he looks to continue to prove that he is truly one of the best wrestlers on the planet Earth. Good luck to John Skyler overseas!

People’s Champ. Hellcat (@Hellcat420)-Last week’s People’s Champ goes back-to-back this week as he once again dominated the online voting competition to secure 327 votes and his second singles victory in the competition. It was his victory over Mattick at UW on 6/13 that got him on the poll and it was his vast fan base that got him the top spot again.
