Indy Power Rankings for the Week of June 15th, 2015
#1 Matt Tremont (@TremontCZW)-For the second straight year, CZW’s Tournament of Death produced a #1 ranking. Last year it was Jun Kasai and this year it was Matt Tremont. It was a straight sweep of #1’s in the ballots of the official voters as Tremont, who was #1 once in 2013, returns to notoriety as he grabs the Grand Slam Championship of Death Matches as he has now won IWA East Coast’s Masters of Pain. IWA Mid-South’s King of the Death Matches, IWA Deep South’s Carnage Cup, and CZW’s Tournament of Death. With victories over Josh Crane, Danny Havoc, and Conor Claxton, “The Bulldozer” earned his stripes yet again. The true “King of the Death Matches” right now reigns supreme once again this week. Next up: a chance to become back to back King of the Death Matches at IWA Mid-South. If anyone can do it, Tremont can…and PERHAPS, the fans will finally get Gage-Tremont. One can hope.
#2 Santana Garrett (@SantanaGarrett_)-Last week’s #1 and STRONG contender to #1 in the IPR 100 falls just one spot this week. Her drop was really no fault of her own as she had yet another dominant weekend with a record of 3-0. The Tournament of Death Winner just slightly edged her out this week, but with that being said, Santana is still THE top female on the indies in terms of our rankings right now. The NWA World Women’s Champion (along with other titles) defeated Shaniah on 6/9 at OPW to retain the title and then defeated Mandy Leon at Queens of Combat on 6/13 and then beat Su Yung at Queens of Combat on 6/14. With 18 straight victories and an INSANE winning percentage in 2015, she just continues to cruise with yet another ranking.
#3 Tessa Blanchard (@TeamTBlanchard)-A familiar face pops up once again in the Indy Power Rankings as Tessa Blanchard dominated her home turf over the weekend. The APWA World Ladies Champion (and EWA Florida Heavyweight Champion) defeated Hania the Howling Huntress at Queens of Combat on 6/13, then defeated LuFisto at Queens of Combat on 6/14, and then wrapped up the weekend by defeating Crazy Mary Dobson at PWX on 6/14 as well. Fantastic 3-0 weekend for the daughter of Tully Blanchard. If last year was any indication, this won’t be the last we see of Tessa Blanchard in 2015.
#4 Zack Sabre Jr. (@zacksabrejr)-One of the most technically sound wrestlers on the face of the Earth makes his return to the Indy Power Rankings Top 10 this week after having a flawless 4-0 week in Japan. The only thing that kept him from an even higher ranking is the fact that most of his victories were tag team matches. He teamed with Gedo at We are Suzuki Gun on 6/9 to defeat Captain New Japan & Captain NOAH, then defeated Jon Webb at NOAH on 6/11, then teamed with Captain NOAH and Shiro Tomoyose on 6/13 to defeat Jon Webb, Jack Gamble & Sakigake, and then teamed with Quiet Storm on 6/14 at NOAH to defeat High Level Enterprise (Jack Gamble & Jon Webb) to wrap up the week. Sabre is one of the best in the world for a reason, so as always, you can expect to see him keep popping as the year rolls on.
#5 Dylan Bostic (@Dylan_Bostic)-Not sure if it can be considered an upset or not, but Dylan Bostic shined in singles over the weekend after receiving mostly tag team recognition in 2014. Bostic became the new IWC Champion after winning this year’s Super Indy Tournament on 6/13. He defeated Super Hentai in the first round, Andrew Palace in the second round, and Raymond Rowe & Alex Daniels in a Triple Threat in the Finals to win the tournament and the title. With a 3-0 record, he’s enjoying his many successes right now. He’ll look to continue that success going forward as he is ever the opportunist.
#6 AJ Styles (@AJStylesOrg)-AJ Styles just continues to do great things on the indies despite all of his commitments to New Japan and ROH. This past week he added another title to his collection as he won the RPW British Heavyweight title from Marty Scurll on 6/14. He is undefeated in his last 15 matches outside of ROH and New Japan with 13 wins and 2 draws. Styles would be getting ranked even higher, but as stated previously multiple times, we no longer consider ROH or New Japan to be independent wrestling companies. That being said, AJ is still the man wherever he goes.
#7 Jun Akiyama-A 4-0 weekend gets one of All Japan’s finest a spot in the Top 10 this week. First, he defeated Sushi at AJPW on 6/10, then teamed with Takao Omori on 6/12 to defeat Akebono & Taiyo Kea, then teamed with Taiyo Kea to defeat Go Shiozaki & Kotaro Suzuki on 6/13, and then finished off the week when he teamed with Sushi on 6/14 to defeat Jake Lee & Taiyo Kea. Much like Zack Sabre Jr, had he had more success in singles as opposed to tags, he likely would have been ranked higher this week.
#8 Chet Sterling (@Chet_Sterling)-Much like Cauliflower Chase Brown last week, this ranking for Chet Sterling is long overdue as the CWF Television Champion (and ½ of the CWF Tag Team Champions) finally cracks the Top 10 this week. His ranking comes on the heels of his victory over Darius Lockhart & Ethan Case in a Triple Threat Match at CWF on 6/13 to retain the title. Sterling, with wins in 9 of his last 10 matches, just continues to shine in North Carolina. Here’s hoping we get to see him tour the U.S. sooner rather than later.
#9 El Ligero (@Ligero1)-The GPW British Champion, PBW Heavyweight Champion and SWE Speed King Champion defeated James Davis on 6/10 at Progress, then defeated Damon Moser on 6/11 at Progress, then defeated Mark Coffey at Tidal Wrestling on 6/14. His lone loss came at the hands of EBW Catch Champion Sam Goodison on 6/12. His run right now is absolutely epic in the UK and Europe, in general. We talked to Jigsaw last week about how good he really is and this is a call to U.S. promoters…bring him in!
#10 John Skyler (@TheJohnSkyler)-The former #1 in the Indy Power Rankings and current PWX Heavyweight Champion (and WrestleForce Champion) returns to the Top 10 this week after proving that he is THE man in PWX right now after defeating Cedric Alexander to retain the title on 6/14. This comes before his trip to China where he looks to continue to prove that he is truly one of the best wrestlers on the planet Earth. Good luck to John Skyler overseas!
People’s Champ. Hellcat (@Hellcat420)-Last week’s People’s Champ goes back-to-back this week as he once again dominated the online voting competition to secure 327 votes and his second singles victory in the competition. It was his victory over Mattick at UW on 6/13 that got him on the poll and it was his vast fan base that got him the top spot again.
Others missing out/receiving votes:
Phage Pumpkinking-#2 in the online voting competition with 185 votes
Teddy King-#3 in the online voting competition with 71 votes
Blue Panther Jr.
Big Daddy Walter
