Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of April 20th, 2015

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of April 20th, 2015

#1 The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter @BeardedBullys)-The NEW Saint Louis Anarchy Tag Team Champions return to the #1 spot in the Indy Power Rankings/Tag Team Top 5 as they absolutely dominated the weekend of tag team wrestling. They defeated Brandon Espinosa & Angelus Layne at SLA on 4/17, then defeated The Viking War Party (Alexandre Rudolph & Jake Parnell) the same night, then defeated Jeremy Wyatt & Christian Rose on 4/18 to become inaugural SLA Tag Team Champions, and then defeated the Ring Rydas (aka OI4K) at JCW on 4/19 to go 4-0 for the week. After being #1 in the IPR 100 in 2014, these bearded bullies are starting to clear a path to that #1 spot this year. They’ve got some work to do, but teaming together every single weekend most definitely has its advantages.

#2 BJ Strong (Daisuke Sekimoto & Yuji Okabayashi)-The only other true contender to the #1 spot this week won just as many matches as The Hooligans, but perhaps the stakes weren’t as high? The  KO-D Tag Team Champions defeated Hideyoshi Kamitani and Ryuichi Kawakami at BJW on 4/14, then defeated Hideyoshi Kamitano & Masato Inaba at BJW on 4/17, then defeated Atsushi Maruyama & Shinobu on 4/18, and then teamed with Yuko Miyamoto on 4/19 to defeat Hideyoshi Kamitani, Kazuki Hashimoto & Ryuichi Kawakami to go 4-0 for the week. This tag team has been quietly crushing the competition in Japan and looks to continue to do so as 2015 rolls on.

#3 The Righteous Army (Joseph Conners & Jimmy Havoc)-It’s the first ranking for the NEW SWE Tag Team Champions as they defeated El Ligero & Stixx at SWE on 4/19 and then defeated The Hunter Brothers (Lee & Jim Hunter) (c) & The London Riots (Rob Lynch & James Davis) the same night to win the titles and go 2-0 for the week. Conners & Havoc were actually the only other team to get a #1 vote from one of the official voters, outside of The Hooligans. If they can continue to team and pick up multiple wins, this team is going to be a huge contender for the top tag team in the UK for 2015. For now, their first ranking is a very high one.

#4 Dangan Yankees (Takashi Sugiura & Masato Tanaka)-The NWA Intercontinental Tag Team Champions defeated Atsushi Onita and Hideki Hosaka at Super Fireworks on 4/18, then defeated TMDK (Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls) at NOAH on 4/19 to go 2-0 for the week. With at least 14 straight wins as a team, they look unstoppable right now in Japan. They came SO close to grabbing the #3 spot this week but failed to really capture any fan support. It gets said a lot, but fans, remember, THE FAN POLL COUNTS. That being said, the official voters showed them enough love to get them back into the Tag Team Top 5 and with their track record, we expect more of that in the future.

#5 Team IOU (Kerry Awful & Nick Iggy @TeamIOU)-While “a boy and his dog” weren’t able to capture yet another “People’s Champs” award this week, they do get an official ranking to add to their chances of a high spot in the Tag Team Top 50 for this year. After some early struggles, this Tennessee tag team has been tearing it up at places like PGP where they are the Tag Team Champions. With a win and defense of their titles vs. Perfect Addiction over the weekend, they have now won four straight matches and with Kerry Awful back and seemingly healthy, the Midwest better look out for one of the best tag teams on the indies. They are motivated and clearly they are hungry.

People’s Champs. Six Till Two (Tower of Power & His Royal Tenis)-The People’s Champs from last week did it again as they survived a VERY competitive online voting competition to go back-to-back as People’s Champs with 147 votes. You can give them a like on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/6till2?fref=ts&ref=br_tf
